The single was initially released in Europe, and also became the first single released outside of Europe when it was released in 1981 in North America and Australasia.  These 1981 releases featured different artwork than the European single.  The North American version featured an alternate B-Side recorded in the United States shortly before the release date of the single.  Some of the copies in North America featured a fold out picture sleeve which looked different on the shelf and folder out into a 6 panel poster.

I Will Follow was also released as a live single on two occasions.  In 1982 it was released in the Netherlands.  In 1983 it was released to promote the live EP Under a Blood Red Sky in North America.  It has also appeared on Hasta La Vista Baby which was a fan club only CD documenting 1997's Popmart Tour.  In 2001 it was also released on several items: The Elevation Single / Sunday Times Promo CD as performed at Irving Plaza in New York in 2000.  It also appeared on the Best Buy Promo CD which featured the song recorded live in Boston during 2001's Elevation tour.
