"Quadrille in Venice"

"QUADRILLE IN VENICE" has been chosen to be featured in the upcoming New This Week Collection on Saatchi Art’s homepage 31st may 2021

"Quadrille in Venice" oil on canvas, 90 x 160 cm (2020)

In this painting the famous four horses of the quadrille of San Marco in Venice are represented.
The 4 horses painted by Trevisan are manifested in their magnificence and glory, the exaltation of the horse.
Trevisan is of Venetian origin (in 1553 Trevisan Marcantonio was doge of Venice) and with this painting he pays homage to his hometown of his family. The painting is supplied with a wooden frame and is ready to hang.

The sculptural group of the Horses of San Marco consists of four bronze alloy horse statues, originally belonging to a triumphant quadriga located at the Hippodrome of Constantinople, now visible in the Basilica of San Marco in Venice, in which they were translated from beginning of the thirteenth century following the sacking of the city by the crusaders.
In 1797, Napoleon Bonaparte removed the horses and brought them to Paris as the object of the French spolings of the Republic of Venice during the Napoleonic occupation, where he used them to draw his quadriga for the Triumphal Arch of the Carrousel.

In 1815 the horses returned to Venice thanks to Captain Dumaresq, commissioned by the Emperor of Austria to take the four horses from the Parisian Arc de Triomphe and lead them to San Marco in Venice.
