History

Cittanova (400 mt above sea level) was founded as an agricultural comunity in August, 12th 1618 and it was called "Nuovo Casal di Curtuladi". It has been destroyed by an earthquake and by the Black Death at the begin of the XVII century. It was rebuilt with the name "Casalnuovo" and on April 2nd 1852 it was renamed by Ferdinando II di Borbone with the present name Cittanova. On February 5th 1783 a violent earthquake, called "The Scourge", destroyed this town together with more than hundred other towns and villages of the Piana. In that unfortunate occasion more than twothousand people died and only the monumental fountain "Dell'Olmo", built 1730 remained integral.
