The commune of Cittanova takes part
of the National park of the Aspromonte, constituted with D.P.R. of 14 January 1994. The calabrian montain is characterized by a really unique orographical conformation. Very common are the silver fir, the larch pine, the black and the neapolitan alder, the beech, the marpel. The most common animals of the Aspromonte are the wild boar, the fox, hare, the wild cat, furthermore the pern - a migratory bird-, the buzzard, the tawny owl, the woodpecker, the woodcock, the quail and so on.Almost 10 km from the center of Cittanova, driving on the SS.111 in direction Locri you will reach the climatic resort of Zomaro. Beech- and Chestnutwoods are surrounding a tourist village, very patronized during the summermonths. Zomaro is also famous for the therapeutical proprieties of the water. For the hikers there is a path from the Passo del Mercante to the village of Zomaro. Very interesting are the rivers Serra and Vacale which decorate naturally the surroundings of Cittanova. The large exposed gravelly river beds are ideal for excursions.
