MODELLI (American version)
Avere tre velivoli basati sullo stesso telaio H-60 ha fatto risparmiare una buona parte degli scarsi fondi a disposizione dell'aviazione navale.
Tutti i modelli sono dotati degli stessi motori a turbina T700 da 1690 C V della GeneraI Electric, oltre che dello stesso sistema di rotori (con un diametro di 16,4 m) e di trasmissione.
Infatti le differenze principali tra le versioni -B, -F e -H si trovano nei vari pacchetti di equipaggiamento studiati per le differenti missioni.
Con una lunghezza complessiva di 19,75 m, un'altezza di 5,2 m e un peso lordo massimo di 9908 kg, il Seahawk è un velivolo compatto e agile.
Fornisce ottime prestazioni anche sui ponti di volo scivolosi e rollanti, persino su quelli delle piccole navi di scorta.
Per assistere gli equipaggi durante le operazioni di rientro, i Seahawk sono dotati di un sistema di cavi
chiamato RAST (Recovery, Assist, Secure and Traversing, recupero, assistenza, aggancio e manovre di traverso), che permette alle squadre
della nave di recuperarlo anche in caso di mare grosso.
Sviluppato dal sistema «Beartrap» canadese, il RAST ha un dispositivo di aggancio scorrevole posizionato sulla piattaforma di atterraggio, che «cattura» un piccolo cavo pendente dal fondo dell'elicottero.
Quando il cavo viene agganciato, l'elicottero viene fatto scendere e poi rimorchiato nell'hangar della nave.
L'armamento dei Seahawk, anche se limitato, è ritagliato per le missioni a loro assegnate.
La normale dotazione bellica delle versioni ASE è costituita da una coppia di siluri ultraleggeri Mk 46 o Mk 50.
Per estendere la sua autonomia, il Seahawk può anche trasportare dei serbatoi esterni. Il modello -B è inoltre in grado di lanciare l' ASM
AGM-119 Penguin Mk 2 Mod. 7 di fabbricazione norvegese.
Con un raggio d'azione di 33 km e un dispositivo di ricerca passiva a infrarossi, quest' arma può mettere fuori combattimento una nave da pattuglia o una piccola unità di scorta, anche nelle immediate vicinanze della costa o di una zona marittima di traffico mercantile neutrale.
Tutte le varianti del Seahawk possono essere equipaggiate con mitragliatrici leggere e hanno imbracature di salvataggio per caricare a
bordo equipaggi di aerei abbattuti e altro personale.
I vari modelli di Seahawk hanno contribuito al mantenimento della (talvolta fragile) pace nel mondo del dopo guerra fredda.
Nel Golfo Persico, ad esempio, gli apparecchi LAMPS III sono stati impegnati nel controllo del traffico e del1' embargo marittimo di materiali militari in Iraq.
Allo stesso tempo, i modelli p sorvegliavano le tre
navi diesel Project 877/ classe Kilo della Marina iraniana mentre i
modelli -H trasportavano le squadre di ispezione sulle navi e svolgevano missioni CSAR.
I Seahawk sono stati impiegati anche in appoggio delle operazioni statunitensi in Bosnia.
In realtà, una task force della Marina non potrebbe essere schierata senza i Seahawk.
A prova di ciò vi è l'ininterrotto successo dell'H-60 sul mercato delle esportazioni.
Fino a oggi Spagna, Giappone, Australia e Taiwan hanno acquistato delle versioni di Seahawk per utilizzarle in diversi tipologie di operazioni di scorta.
