Dopo il primo gruppo di 25 portaerei di scorta definito nel dicembre 1941, la Marina degli Stati Uniti nel 1942 ordinò altre 76 navi di questo tipo per un totale di 101 unità. Di queste furono consegnate alla Marina inglese 12 unità del primo gruppo e 26 del secondo.
Le altre 50 navi costituirono la classe Casa bianca (poi Anzio) e furono navi di tipo speciale. che invece di turbine montavano macchine alternative.
Le 50 unità vennero costruite nell'arco di un anno: infatti dalla consegna della Casa Bianca avvenuta 1'8 luglio 1943 a quella della C VE 104 Munda avvenuta 1'8 luglio 1944 era trascorso esattamente un anno.
La costruzione di 50 navi in un solo cantiere e in soli 12 mesi rappresentava un primato, raggiunto grazie all'organizzazione per la pro- duzione in serie realizzata nel cantiere.
Le unità erano simili alle altre portaerei di scorta: ave- vano un ponte di volo completo con una piccola isola sul Iato destro. con albero ma senza fumaiolo. due elevatori e una catapulta. Per 10 scarico del fumo delle caldaie vi erano due piccoli fumaioli sul lato destro, notevolmente distanziati fra loro.
La poppa era di forma quadrata e su di essa si protendeva a sbalzo la parte estrema del ponte di volo. Sullo specchio di poppa era sistemata una plancetta per il cannone da 127 mm a.3. Le 24 mitragliere da 20 mm erano in dodici postazioni binate ai lati del ponte di volo.
La Anzio (che precedentemente si chiamava Alikula Bay e poi C VE 57 Coral cambiato in Anzio nel settembre 1944) fu dislocata nel Pacifico dove subito affondò il sommergibile giapponese I 41.
Fu a Iwo Jima e a Okinawa: in totale i suoi aerei affondarono 5 sommergibili giapponesi.
Nel 1955 fu cor1vertita in porta elicotteri ausiliaria e radiata nel 1960.
