L'Enterprise può considerarsi la capostipite delle portaerei a propulsione nucleare e per questo la sua genesi fu molto travagliata.
E' stata infatti il prototipo delle portaerei del futuro ed a lungo ha rischiato di essere l'unica portaerei nucleare della storia.
E' una delle poche portaerei della storia americana che non ha avuto una gemella (come la Langley e la Wasp), in quanto è nata come nave sperimentale.
Le portaerei successive in ordine temporale (CV65 America e CV66 Kennedy) erano infatti portaerei a propulsione tradizionale.
Dal punto di vista estetico si differenzia da tutte le super portaerei americane per la enorme isola a forma di cubo, naturalmente priva di fumaioli a causa della propulsione nucleare.
Si è però subito dimostrata (vedi guerra del Vietnam) una nave velocissima (ancora oggi supera per velocità le classi Nimitz), pensate che nel viaggio di prova gli otto reattori nucleari portarono la nave ad una velocità superiore ai 40 nodi!
Si caratterizza anche per essere una nave potente e dotata di una autonomia enormemente superiore alle portaerei a propulsione tradizionale, il che, alla lunga, ha fatto optare la U.S. Navy per la propulsione nucleare.
E' stata la prima portaerei ad essere concepita per essere difesa soltanto dai suoi aerei e dagli incrociatori di scorta.
La sua lunga storia (ha anche subito un incendio che seriamente danneggiata) ed il fatto che è stata rimodernata totalmente nel 1979 e nel 1994, per cui adesso è un'unità totalmente nuova, lontana parente di quella originale, dimostra come la U.S. Navy voglia mantenerla attiva e al top non mandandola in disarmo come è successo per le coetanee classe Forrestal.
Si può ben dire che ha meritato il proprio nome (deriva dalla Enterprise CV-6 protagonista delle Midway )!

And' is the first aircraft carrier to be conceived for being defended only by its airplanes and by the cruisers of escort.
His/her long history (it has also suffered a fire how seriously damaged) and the fact that has totally been modernized in 1979 and in 1994, for which it now is totally a new unity, distant relative of that original, shows as the U.S. Navy wants to maintain her/it active and to the top not sending her/it in disarmament as has happened for the contemporary class Forrestal.
You is able well to say that has deserved his/her own name (derives from the Enterprise CV-6 protagonist of the Midway)!
