La Portaerei, progettata per corrispondere al requisito operativo stabilito dallo Stato Maggiore, avrà le seguenti caratteristiche principali (sono riportate a titolo di paragone alcune caratteristiche di nave Garibaldi):

In particolare la velocità massima e continuativa sarà di 28 nodi, per poter svolgere le operazioni di volo degli aerei imbarcati anche nelle condizioni meno favorevoli, cioè in assenza di vento.
L'autonomia sarà di 7000 miglia alla velocità di 16 nodi, corrispondenti a circa 18 giorni di navigazione. Tale capacità è necessaria per le operazioni a lungo raggio. Per esempio l'unità potrà raggiungere senza scalo il Golfo Persico (distante da Taranto circa 3300 miglia) utilizzando il 50% del combustibile imbarcato.
La nave sarà in grado di ospitare 1210 persone (il Garibaldi ne può ospitare 830) così suddivise:
equipaggio nave 451 (Garibaldi 630)
persone componente volo 203 (Garibaldi 100)
Comando complesso: 140 (Garibaldi 100)
Reggimento San Marco: 325- Margine per situazioni particolari: 91
Il contratto tra la Direzione generale per gli armamenti navali (NAVARM) e la società Fincantieri per l'acquisizione dell'unità è stato firmato nel mese di novembre 2000; la costruzione ha avuto inizio nel cantiere di Riva Trigoso (GE) nell'estate 2001. Il varo è avvenuto il 20 luglio 2004.
L'unità completa del Sistema di combattimento sarà consegnata alla Marina Militare nel corso dell'anno 2007.
The Aircraft carrier, projected to correspond to the operational requisite established by the Most greater State, it will have the principal characteristic followings (they are brought some characteristics of ship to title of comparison Garibaldi):
Displacement full load 27.100 tonns.
Garibaldi 13.850 tonns.

Width max. 39.0 mt. (limit imposed by the passage by the bridge in Taranto)
Immersion max. 8,70 mt. (in correspondence of the helixes)
Particularly maximum and continuous speed will be of 28 knots, to be able to develop the operations of flight of the airplanes also embarked under the least favorable conditions, that is in absence of wind.
Autonomy will be of 7000 miles to the speed of 16 knots, correspondents to about 18 days of navigation. Such ability is necessary for a long time for the operations ray. The unity can for example reach without port the Persian Gulf (distant from Taranto around 3300 miles) using 50% of the embarked fuel.
The ship will be able to entertain 1210 people (the Garibaldi can entertain 830 of them) so divided:

The contract among the general Direction for the naval armaments (NAVARM) and the society Fincantieri for the acquisition of the unity has been signed in the month of November 2000; the construction has had beginning in the yard of Shore Trigoso (GE) in the summer 2001. The launching has happened July 20 th 2004.
The complete unity of the System of fight will be delivered to the Marina Militare during the year 2007.
