Questa portaerei, nata come ibrido dallo scafo di una corazzata, avrebbe dovuto incrementare l'esiguo numero di portaerei pesanti che il Giappone possedeva nel 1944 (Taiho, Shokaku e Zuikaku dovevano fronteggiare una ventina di portaerei pesanti americane della classe Essex).
Si caratterizzava per l'impressionante corazzatura e allo stesso tempo per lo scarso numero di aerei ospitati.
Dall'esame degli schemi costruttivi emerge che la trasformazione in portaerei è stata realizzata attaccando l'enorme ponte di volo corazzato allo scafo pesantemente protetto delle corazzate di classe Yamato.
In teoria sarebbe dovuta essere la portaerei più corazzata e protetta dell'epoca anche se lo scarso numero di aerei a disposizione ne rendeva dubbia la capacità offensiva.
In particolare non ebbe mai modo di dimostrare la sua potenza operativa perchè fu silurata quando ancora mancavano diverse paratie stagne e non era stata ancora completamente realizzata la cintura di protezione anti siluri.
A parte questi difetti strutturali l'affondamento della nave fu dovuto al comportamento criminale e stupido del suo comandante.
Tale Toshio Abe, novello Nelson, o forse sarebbe meglio dire Schettino, una volta che la nave fu silurata non si preoccupò minimamente di diminuire la velocità e portare la portaerei verso il più vicino porto per le riparazioni ma continuò stoltamente a seguire la rotta prestabilita a tutta velocità fino a che l'unità non cominciò ad affondargli sotto i piedi.
Basti pensare che i siluri la colpirono alle 3.45 del 19 novembre del 1944 mentre la nave affondò alle 10.57 portando con sè 1453 marinai. La dignità di marinaio del capitano fu salvata dal fatto scelse di affondare con la nave, forse per onore marinaresco ma molto più probabilmente per evitare la vergogna di dover spiegare in patria come l'orgoglio della flotta giapponese fosse affondata ancora prima di diventare operativa.
Possiamo considerarla come una potente nave, ma di scarsa velocità, che non ebbe mai modo di dimostrare, grazie al suo capitano, il suo valore.
Rimarrà comunque nella storia per la sua enorme stazza e per le dimensioni gigantesche del suo ponte di volo.

You characterized for the impressive corazzatura and at the same time for the scarce number of entertained airplanes.
From the examination of the constructive schemes it emerges that the transformation in aircraft carrier has been realized attaching the enormous bridge of flight heavily armored to the protected hull of the battleships of class Yamato.
In theory it would be due to be the aircraft carrier more armored and protected of the epoch even if the scarce number of disposition airplanes it made the offensive ability doubtful of it.
Particularly it never had the opportunity of showing his/her operational power because you/he/she was torpedoed when he/she anchors they missed different watertight paratie (particular pathetic: the captain of the Shinano had not wanted to avoid the torpedos of the American submersible because he thought that its ship was unsinkable!).
We can consider her/it as a powerful person ship, but of scarce speed, that never had the opportunity of showing his/her value.
It will remain in the history for its enormous tonnage and for the gigantic dimensions of his/her bridge of flight however.
