L'annuncio del trionfo nella battaglia del Nilo (questa è tuttora la denominazione britannica) doveva portarlo in Inghilterra il Leander, piccolo vascello da 50 cannoni su cui si imbarcò il capitano Berry (al suo posto, sul Vanguard, subentrò il giovane capitano Thomas Hardy, già comandante del brigantino Mutine).
Ma sfortunatamente il Leander incontrò lo zoppicante Le Genereux, superstite di Abukir, e venne catturato dal capitano del vascello francese, Le Joille.
Il 14 agosto Nelson spedì in patria sir James Saumarez, suo comandante in seconda, con le prede: sei vascelli di linea francesi caduti nelle sue mani.
A Plymouth, però, dinanzi all'immensa folla in attesa, ne comparvero solo cinque perche il sesto venne lasciato a Gibilterra.
Il 15 agosto giunsero a Nelson nuovi ordini da Jervis: partire subito per Napoli, dopo aver bruciato tre vascelli francesi che non si potevano rimorchiare.
Il blocco di Alessandria doveva essere mantenuto da altri tre vascelli, al comando di Samuel Hood.
Come sempre, dopo un grande fatto glorioso, cominciarono meschine polemiche, tipiche della debolezza umana.
Nelson fu coperto di regali: dalla città di Londra (una spada da 200 ghinee), dalla Compagnia delle Indie (pietre preziose), da una società patriottica (un servizio da cinquecento sterline).
