THE RAID AND THE END OF THE EMDEN

THE RAID AND THE END OF THE EMDEN

The cruiser legero the captain's Emden von Müller was separated by the team of von Spee to the island of Pagan and, accompanied by the auxiliary ship Markomannia, you/he/she was directed toward the Indian ocean his/her future reserve of hunting. Along the road you/he/she was met with the German steamboat Prinzessin Alice that, not could follow him/it for a damage to the boilers, it was expeditious to Philippines (American from 1898, and therefore neutral); then with the gunboat Geier, run away from German Oriental Africa, that was sent to the Hawaii to remain you internee. To the island of Timor von Müller had the first serious difficulties for the restocking of the coal, that the Dutch authorities wanted to prevent him and that you/he/she could effect, instead, in the Portuguese anchorage of Nusi Besi. Then, to pass through the narrow passages of the Islands of the Probe tightly watched over by the British ships, the Emden resorted to a stratagem: raised a quarter, false chimney, him incorciatore camufò English and he/she succeeded in overcoming that difficulty line of sea.

In the Indian ocean the Emden was for a lot of weeks a painful thorn in the side of the British harbor. The war of raced by it conducted with extraordinary fortune and skill - always characterized by a chivalrous behavior worthy of other times - it caused huge damages to the commerce English. Altogether the Emden appropriated him of 22 merchant ships, of which 16 were sunk, 2 use as colliers and 4 were postponed free with the crews of the various preys, unharmed and legionaries from a human treatment, such that the same adversaries could not refuse to show respect and even admiration for that modern ship corsair. Von Müller was able to locate the allied ships and to attend her to the passage through the newspapers found on board of his/her preys.

On September 22 the Emden bombed the oil deposits of Madras, in India, setting on fire them for around 2 million liters, escaping therefore to the pursuit of the cruiser armored Hampshire. On October 28 the pirate pushed his/her temerity up to the point to present himself/herself/themselves in front of the provided one I bring of Penang on the oriental coast of the Malesia. It penetrated you to the dawn and with two torpedos it sank you the Russian cruiser Yemtschug, that was found to the incora; then, in to go out of the I bring, it sank to cannonades the French destroyer Mousquet and it got further, making to lose his/her own traces to the destroyer Pistolet that had tried to pursue him/it. The prices of the insurances on the ships merchant English climbed to the stars and the transports of Australian troops and neozelandsi for the battlegrounds in Europe they nearly resulted of it paralyzed.

The end of the Emden came rapids and unexpected. The captain von Müller had decided to destroy the station radiotelegrafica English of the island Cocos and to cut you the submarine cable. On November 9, accompanied by the escort ship Buresk, it came in front of that coral atoll and it disembarked a detachment of 3 officers and 45 sailors to put out use the station radio. This, however, did in time to launch a last, desperate message of help, that was picked - even if not inclusive - from a British convoy escorted by numerous war ships. They were the armored cruiser Minotaur of the admiral Jerram, the light cruisers Melbourne and Sydney of the Australian team and the Japanese Ibuki. The Sydney was detached for seeing how same accadedo al'isola Cocos; you/he/she was established however that, if you/he/she had not returned, first the Melbourne and then the Ibuki you/they would have gone to take its place: from that moment, therefore, the fate of the Emden was marked.

At 7,30 o'clock the detachment disembarked by the German ship demolished the spar and destroyed the station radiotelegrafica; then it cut the submarine cables, it towed them with the boats and it let them fall offshore. At 9 o'clock the look-outs of the Emden sighted a cloud of smoke to the horizon and von Müller, amiss holding to have to whether to do with the incorciatore Newcastle, of armament and speed to the incica equal to those of its ship, taken the breadth to give battle, without having the time to take back on board the disembarked sailors, and therefore with the incomplete crew. In reality the Sydney was more powerful person, faster and more favorite; its broadside of 226,5 kgs. it outclassed of almost three times that of the Emden, of solos 80 kgs. Despite his/her evident conditions of inferiority, the German ship accepted the fight and bravely fought, striking at least 16 times the adversary but the Sydney, thanks to its greater speed, draught of the pieces brought out him from 105 mms. of the adversary, keeping on hammering it with its calibers from 152.

Á along the Emden sustained battle you learn him; until, prey to the fires, it threw him in coast on the coral benches. They were the 11,20. The Australian incorciatore kept on striking it, suspending the alone draught to pursue the Buresk that, not to make to be captured, preferred autoaffondarsi; therefore it returned to the island Cocos to capture the German sailors disembarked in the first morning, but it didn't succeed in finding them. In fact, having assisted impotent to the destruction of their ship, they had appropriated of a brig anchored in the I bring, the Ayesha, and with that it had sailed toward Sumatra.

To the dawn of November 10 the situation on board some Emden was tragic: the wounded were numerous and tortured from the thirst but the Sydney it took back the bombardment up to when von Müller made to lower the insignias of war and to lift the flag of truce. The Germans had had 133 corpses on a total of 361 (48 of which you/they were not on board during the fight).

The Ayesha reached Sumatra at the end of November and here its crew climbed on board of the German steamboat Choysing. After an adventurous navigation, that sailors of the Emden reached the I bring of Hodeida on the Red Sea from where, through Arabia and Turkey, they reached Constantinople and, they finally reentered in country.
