EBLA
Ancient city of northern Syria discovered in 1968 from an Italian archaeological mission, directed by Paolo Matthiae, in Tell Mardikh, a high ground at 60 km to south of Aleppo. In 1975 were suited to the light the real files of Ebla, that included over 14.000 registrations on clay tablets dated back to the inclusive period between 2500 and 2200 B.C. Written in cuneiform characters by the Sumerians of the Mesopotamia and adapted to the language of the Semitic inhabitants of Ebla, they reveal to us as the city was an important commercial center governed by a king elected by an aristocracy type merchant. The civilization of Ebla was so flourishing to be been in rivalry with those of Egypt and of the Mesopotamia.
