For the lesson on 14-3-08 (Task 1)

1.Find out the percentage of university drop-outs (morti bianche accademiche) in Italy and, if possible, Roma Tre. Give the figure and your source.  Is your source valid? What interest and what point of view does it represent?

2. Make a hypothesis about the English expression for “morti bianche” in factories and building sites.  Then test your hypothesis with an English-speaking person. Choose an English-speaking nationality/culture you would like to be part of (for a short time): Irish? Jamaican? Australian? “Sloane Ranger” Londoner? Texan? Find a web site to chat with someone of that nationality/culture. Do not ask direct questions.  Report your conversation and your conclusions using this model>

Task 3: Read the first 5 pages of “How to Interview” (up to the link to Appendix A.>  
Write your answer to the question about the video on cultural differences between a Dutch boy and a French girl. (Username: PICTUREX   Password: corkos)

Task 4: Read Appendix A>    which shows how to make a questionnaire to verify the (hypothesized) cultural values of a British person. Then make a questionnaire to verify the cultural values that you hypothesize for a typical student of Trinity College. (Trinity college USA>  , Trinity College Rome>  )

Here is an example of how one of the students of our course made her questionnaire. I corrected it and if you read my corrections you will learn how to make a better questionnaire>  .

Task 5: On Thursday, April 3^rd,
a party with the students of Trinity College during which you do two kinds of interviews:
a. a QUALITATIVE interview, i.e. a conversation during which you try to establish an empathic relationship in order to “feel” your interlocutor's values;
b. a QUANTITATIVE interview using your questionnaire to test for the values you hypothesized.      N.B. Do not read your questions from a piece of paper! Memorize them and then work them into the conversation, alternating from qualitative to quantitative interviewing.

N.B. Il foglio distribuito a lezione porta erroneamente l'indicazione “Task 6”. In realtà si tratta del Task 5. Infatti, il Task 4 consiste nel preparare il questionario e il Task 5 (svolto dopo le interviste a Trinity College o in un pub, con un registratore nel secondo caso) consiste nell'analizzare criticamente l'intervista e le (presunte) conoscenze che l'intervista ti ha date.

Nota Bene pure:  Già che ci sono, segnalo un'ulteriore correzione.
Nell'illustrare la nascita dell'inglese, mi sono riferito continuamente
alla cifra 55 sulla lavagna, generando un po' di (legittima) confusione. 
Infatti, bisognava distinguere tra 55 avanti Cristo e 55 dopo Cristo
e, infine, 550 dopo Cristo (ho saltato lo “0” nel parlare dell'epoca
delle invasioni sassoni, ecc.!).   Il tutto viene illustrato qui>

la relazione etnografica sulle interviste agli studenti di Trinity College

Quindi per l'esonero dovete sapere SOLO “How to Interview” (con tutte le appendici, però).
Quindi niente Crystal, niente “Understanding others”, niente “Il come e il perché”.
MA attenzione, prima di mettervi a ballare: le domande saranno precisine del tipo:
“Nell'appendice E, viene spiegato in cosa consiste una traduzione interculturale,
ossia una traduzione con adattamenti culturali. Quali sono i tre meccanismi illustrati?”

N.B. In caso di conflitto con altri corsi o per altro motivo, lo studente ha facoltà di cambiare fascia oraria ( LL> OCI o vice versa).  Infatti, i programmi sono identici,  Cambia solo il metodo didattico: mattina, lezione tradizionale dall'alto della cattedra; pomeriggio, lezioni interattive per imparare a parlare meglio l'inglese interculturalmente.

In caso di conflitti in entrambe le fasce orarie:
1. avvertire il docente: patrick@boylan.it;
2. avvertire il rappresentante studentesco tramite il forum in modo che egli possa far presente i conflitti.
(Paghi le tasse per intero: dovresti dunque avere il diritto di poter seguire per intero i corsi del tuo piano di studio istituzionale);
3. scegliere, tra i due corsi in conflitto, quello che richiede di più la presenza in aula (ad esempio, scegliere il corso di lingua invece del corso di linguistica e, tra due corsi di lingua, scegliere la lingua meno conosciuta).

NB: In case of time schedule conflicts or for any other reason, students may freely change the course they take (LL or OCI) .  This is possible because the course syllabi are identical.  Only the teaching method changes: morning, traditional lectures; afternoon, interactive lessons to learn to speak English interculturally.

In case of conflicts at both times:
1. let the teacher know: patrick@boylan.it;
2. inform your student Rep by a post on the forum so that he can activate the appropriate channels;
      (You pay full tuition so you have every right to attend
      all courses on your “institutional” class schedule);
3. for the time being, chose the course where attendance is most advisable (for example, a language course over a linguistics course; between two language courses, the lesser known language).
