1 aprile: Aggiornamento box office. 8 MILE grossed $1.6M at 1,041 playdates in 13 countries this weekend thanks to good holdovers in Brazil, and France. We have three more releases: Romania on April 4, Venezuela on May 14 and Japan on May 24. Here are some of the weekend highlights: In Brazil, 8 MILE grosses are still coming in but we know that it held strong at No. 6 with an estimated $150k at 90 playdates, off 22% from last weekend¡¯s outstanding opening. The 10-day cume is $423k. In Italy, 8 MILE is No. 2 in its third weekend. It grossed $662k at 212 playdates, off 52%. The 17-day cume is an outstanding $6.2M. In France, it moved into its fourth week and grossed $466k at 389 playdates, off 34% and raised its 33-day cume to $12M.

2 aprile: LA RIVISTA DEL CINEMATOGRAFO - Esordio a ritmo di rap. Debutta nel cinema il rapper più famoso del momento. E alla sua prima prova come attore Eminem buca lo schermo. A sorpresa. In 8 mile di Curtis Hanson tanto ritmo, poche coreografie e niente ballo. Osservando Eminem seduto al suo posto che, come un normalissimo pendolare, scarabocchia con la mano sinistra (il Nostro è mancino) gli appunti per le sfide di improvvisazione rap viene in mente uno dei principi enunciati da Jack Kerouac nei suoi fondamenti della prosa spontanea: "Scrivi con eccitazione, velocemente, coi crampi da penna o battitura". A bordo dell’ 8 Mile che, titolo del film, è anche autobus e strada che delimita il perimetro della città di Detroit, Eminem\Jimmy\Bunny Rabbit non percorre solo il tragitto che lo porta al lavoro ma, come dice il regista Curtis Hanson, cerca di superare "la linea psicologica che lo separa dalla realizzazione dei suoi sogni". Ma tutto ciò che sembra scorrere fluido nella mente e nel cuore si inceppa nella gola fino a strozzarlo quando si trova a dover affrontare un duello a colpi di rime con altri rapper, tutti di colore, lui bianco e così incredibilmente somigliante ad uno Shevchenko che non sa più andare in gol. Ambientato in una Detroit sconfitta dal degrado e dall’abbandono (siamo nel 1995), 8 mile è esempio concreto di una sopravvivenza artistica ed emotiva affidata alla musica hip hop e ai rapper, formidabili pistoleri in rima ed implacabili poeti senza poesia. Racconta Eminem: "Ricordo che quando perdevo una sfida mi sembrava che il mondo mi crollasse addosso. Molti cercavano di tirarmi su, ma io continuavo a sentirmi male, come se la mia vita fosse finita… può sembrare un’attività stupida, ma per molti di noi è tutto il nostro mondo". Tra i molti spunti di interesse che il film offre, come la fotografia affidata a Rodrigo Prieto ( lo stesso di Amores Perros) e la presenza nel cast di Brittany Murphy già apprezzata in Don’t Say a Word, quello che più intriga e la sensazione di assistere all’aggiornamento di un genere. 8 Mile potrebbe infatti rappresentare un nuovo capitolo nell’evoluzione del musical. Proprio nel momento in cui Chicago di Rob Marshall si accinge a raccogliere una prevedibile messe di Oscar provvedendo magari ad accendere un'interessante sfida a distanza (meglio o peggio di Moulin Rouge!?), il film di Curtis Hanson, grazie anche ad una struttura molto classica, si propone come primo tentativo (involontario? ma importa?) di creare un genere nuovo. Non esistono regole specifiche per far nascere nuovi filoni, se non quelle rintracciabili a posteriori. Oggi la musica è questa, o comunque anche questa. Come sarebbe West Side Story ai giorni nostri? 8 Mile, un musical senza ballo, prosciugato da coreografie ridondanti che così poco si adattano ai ritmi incalzanti dei rapper, i quali si limitano ad accompagnare con movimenti ripetitivi al limite della nevrosi il loro incedere verbale. Film classico, dicevamo, quasi convenzionale. Forse sta proprio qui la forza del film di Curtis Hanson. Proporre qualcosa di nuovo servendosi di un impianto collaudatissimo. Come collaudatissimo invece non sembra essere l’adattamento del doppiaggio. In certi momenti sembra di sentir parlare il duo comico milanese dello Zelig, i Pali e Dispari ("ci sto dentro", "sbaglio mio, sbaglio mio"). Bravi comunque Massimiliano Alto che presta la voce al protagonista e la solita Simona Izzo alle prese con una Kim Basinger mamma intensa e debole. A proposito, è curioso che un film come 8 mile possa essere accostato per certi versi a Sweet Sixteen di Ken Loach, dove pure c’è un figlio che è migliore della madre, "puro" nonostante tutto e a tutto disposto per la salvezza della famiglia. E per concludere l’inizio del film. Eminem di fronte allo specchio che parla per farsi coraggio e affrontare il pubblico che assisterà alla sua sfida con il collega rapper. Torna molto spesso ultimamente questa situazione. Il protagonista che scruta la propria anima parlando a se stesso: l'ultimo discutibile Muccino, ad esempio, ma più ancora lo struggente Spike Lee di prossima uscita. E poco tempo fa Sam Raimi che in Spider-Man permetteva a Willem Dafoe di citare il premio Oscar Ronald Colman in Doppia vita, dell’irraggiungibile George Cukor.

3 aprile: BBC INTERVIEW WITH KIM BASINGER - After winning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her work in "L.A. Confidential", it's no surprise to see Kim Basinger teaming up again with Curtis Hanson for "8 Mile". What will surprise filmgoers, though, is the role: a trailer trash mom, Stephanie, who's at loggerheads with her wannabe rapper son (Eminem)...
How tough was "8 Mile" for you?
My security was having Curtis Hanson at the helm of this. I knew he would get me where he wanted me to go. It was a wild ride. It was a scary ride. It was really, really scary at times. Stephanie's quite a complex person, and it was a great opportunity for me. 
How was it working with Eminem? Was he nervous?
Eminem is very cool. This is a very intense ride and we had to go to some raw places, some very hard places with this script. It was hard. It was tough. I wouldn't say he was nervous, I think we were all nervous. It was kind of like a common bond we all had, whether we could make this real and raw. 
Why did this story speak to you?
I think it's talking about communication. I'm prejudiced but I think no one can do this as well as Curtis Hanson can. I think he has his finger on the pulse of America and on people - not just America, on the world - and what people want to see or need or whatever. He went into those waters and I'm glad he took me with him. 
What has it meant to you being part of this project?
The day I left Detroit, tears were in my eyes. I said to myself, "I'm really going to miss this crew. We've gone on a really wild ride together." But you know what? I am not going to miss Stephanie!" 

4 aprile: ACCESS HOLLYWOOD - Eminem Exclusive! Can Eminem be taken seriously in Hollywood? It's been a long and controversial road for the rap artist, and now he's talking about those early days. Eminem chose to do just one television interview to promote his film 8 Mile, and that one was with Access Hollywood. Pat O'Brien went to Detroit and talked to Em about life before he was the real "slim shady," life before the money, life before the fame, before the controversy, and long before his life was the inspiration for a movie.
Pat O'Brien: What was your reaction when you found out that Kim Basinger was going to play your mom?
Eminem: I was excited. I was geeked up. I was geeked, first of all, she's beautiful. Second of all, she's an incredible actress, and like, that's when I really knew that I had to step up to the plate. That this movie was not a joke. Then, when Brittany Murphy was cast, and Mekhi Phifer was cast, s--- started gettin' thicker. The pressure started getting like, ‘This is a real movie.'
Pat: Did you ever want to do a movie? Did you ever say to yourself someday I want to be in a movie as part of my scheme? 
Eminem: My only scheme was to be a rapper. My dream was like, let me get a record deal, let me go gold, and I'll be happy. Let me make a living off of what I do. 
Pat: What was it like being a white rapper back then in the late '80s-early '90s? Did people say, "White rapper -- is this possible?"
Eminem: There was a lot of cats that I seen as I was coming up. That, you know, were trying to come up at the same time as me, who never made it or haven't made it yet. But very few I would see in the same spots I was in. I would go the clubs with my tapes. I used to literally make my own tapes, go to Kinko's, press up, draw my own covers, press the covers up at Kinko's and sell them out of my trunk, go into these clubs where I'm literally like the only white person there and try to sell my tape or my CD. 
Pat: How close were those battles in the movie to the battles that you were in?
Eminem: Exact same intensity. That's one thing that I want this movie to get across, is that people who live in this world of hip-hop -- how seriously we take this, how seriously we take our music and battling and the sport of it and the competition and everything.
Pat: How close to your real life do you want people to think it is, or how close is it? 
Eminem: It's symbolic. It's just symbolic. I mean, basically, you know, like obviously everything that happened in the movie didn't happen in my real life. I've lived in trailers, but I didn't grow up in a trailer. So, there's different things, but the basis of it is the same idea -- a lower-class, poor kid coming up wanting to do music, getting tugged every different which way by his friends and not knowing which way to go.

24 aprile: THE DOOR IN THE FLOOR: An adaptation of John Irving's novel "A Widow for One Year". Alternatively tragic and comic, "The Door in the Floor" explores the complexities of love in both its brightest and darkest corners. Set in the privileged beach community of East Hampton, New York, the film chronicles one pivotal summer in the lives of famous children's books author Ted Cole (Bridges) and his beautiful wife Marion (Basinger). Their once-great marriage has been strained by tragedy. Her resulting despondency and his subsequent infidelities have prevented the couple from confronting a much-needed change in their relationship. Eddie O'Hare, the young man Ted hires to work as his summer assistant, is the couple's unwitting yet willing pawn - and, ultimately, the catalyst in the transformation of their lives. Basinger, Rogers, Phillips Join 'Door In The Floor'. Kim Basinger, Mimi Rogers and Bijou Phillips have joined lead Jeff Bridges in The Door in the Floor, according to Variety. Based on John Irving bestseller, A Widow For One Year' , Tod Williams will write and direct the adaptation for Focus Features. Set in a privileged East Hampton beach community, the story explores the complexities of love during one pivotal summer in the lives of a celebrated children's author (Bridges) and his wife (Basinger). Jon Foster and Elle Fanning complete the cast. Shooting for the movie started March 31 in and around the Hamptons.
