Maggio 2003

1 maggio: Un po' di news su Kim.
E' USCITA LA COLONNA SONORA DI PEOPLE I KNOW - MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PEOPLE I KNOW SOUNDTRACK PICTURE PEOPLE I KNOW TO BE RELEASED. ** FEATURING SONGS BY RICKIE LEE JONES AND JAZZ LEDGEND JON HENDRICKS**. **ORIGINAL FILM SCORE BY TERENCE BLANCHARD**. (New York, NY- April 11, 2003) The much anticipated film, People I Know, starring Al Pacino finally gets its U.S. premiere after a successful showing at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. Rounding out the film’s cast are Ryan O’Neal, Tea Leoni and Kim Basinger. Complimenting the intriguing story line, legendary composer Terence Blanchard successfully blends a mix of jazz and blues that lends itself to the movie’s dramatic, soul-searching theme. These lush, emotionally evocative melodies give the viewer a feeling of suspense and drama. The soundtrack will be released on Decca Records April 22 and features “Bye Bye Blackbird” performed in the film by jazz legend, Jon Hendricks as well as the classics version by Rickie Lee Jones. Blanchard has composed original scores for many movies such as Malcolm X and Son Of Sam to name a few. Some of Blanchard’s honors include a 1995 Emmy nomination for Best Original Score for a Documentary for The Promised Land, a 1996 Grammy nomination for Best Latin Jazz Performance for The Heart Speaks and a 2001 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo for his 2000 Sony Classical recording, Wandering Moon.  The movie starts out with a New York publicist, Eli Wurman (Al Pacino), whose career has seen better days. He realizes that after spending his life devoting his time to smoothing out the lives of the rich and famous, that famous actor, Cary Launer (Ryan O’Neal) is one of his only remaining A-list clients. Although Eli is a seasoned publicist, he has been enlisted to get Launer out of trouble with a young starlet named Jill (Tea Leoni). Launer asks Eli to discreetly escort Jill out of town and out of his life forever. This seems like an easy enough task for Eli to handle- more like a degrading babysitting job, but he soon finds himself entangled in a web of mystery involving politics and celebrity. After his crazy night with Jill, Eli reaches out to an old friend, Victoria (Kim Basinger) for help. Victoria shows him that she understands the high-stakes game he is playing and tries to convince him it’s not worth it. Eli soon finds out the true meaning behind the movie’s title—it is not who you are that matters, it’s who you know! People I Know, a Myriad Picture in association with Southfork Pictures, is set to open on April 25 in select theatres in New York and Los Angeles and opens nation-wide in May 2003.

BBC NEWS. Kim Basinger will be heading to the Riviera this summer to shoot a film version of Oscar Wilde's play Lady Windermere's Fan.  Set in the 1930s, the story follows an audacious woman "of a certain age" who flees troubles in New York for Europe.  Joseph Fiennes will co-star in A Good Woman, to be directed by Mike Barker and filmed in either France or Italy.

21 maggio: WOODLAND HILLS -- A perky, 10-year-old German shepherd-sheltie mix named Cleo captured Best in Show, Sunday, earning a quick hug from actress Kim Basinger, who handed a trophy and a basket loaded with prizes to a very happy dog owner. Richard Vye of Santa Monica said he knew Cleo was special. "We've won before because Cleo is a trick dog," Vye said of Cleo's ability to give high-fives with her paws to anyone who asks. "But we've never won Best in Show before." In the eyes of Westminster Kennel Club owners, who may sniff off any comparisons, the second annual Nuts for Mutts dog show and contest Sunday at Pierce College in Woodland Hills might not look like much. But organizers from New Leash on Life Animal Rescue say it's what the show accomplishes that counts.  The nonprofit organization formed in 1997 in response to the staggering number of animals organizers said are euthanized in city shelters because of overpopulation. New Leash has saved 2,500 dogs Valleywide, with last year's event raising up to $30,000. Organizers said they may have exceeded that amount this year, drawing in sponsors, celebrity judges and Basinger's assistance in hosting the show. The funds will help keep an educational, rehabilitation and adoption center opening in Santa Clarita this summer. In addition, 10 dogs up for adoption drew interest because of the event, said Jennifer Wilkie, operations manager for New Leash on Life. "It seems like everyone is enjoying themselves," she said. "Last year, we had 2,500 people come. I believe this year we had more." Strolling proudly with their owners and ruling the fields Sunday were mixed breeds both big and small, hairy or hairless, and even three-legged. There were dozens of booths at the show, many selling specialty items such as dog-size love seats and organic foods. At Nuts for Mutts, diversity ruled, and quirky skills such as worst breath, fastest eater, best kisser and best wag could earn a dog a blue ribbon and some pretty serious prizes for their owners. For Best in Show, Cleo won Vye a trip for two to the Bahamas. Sarah Clifford, 24, of Palmdale figured her golden retriever-husky mix, Kuma, had the best stupid pet trick. Kuma picks up cash and coins from the ground, plops them into a piggy bank and gives the piggy bank to the judges. Celebrity judges were indeed thrilled and gave Kuma a blue ribbon to add to a red second-place one he won performing tricks. Terry Frias of Van Nuys planned to dress up her 19-month-old boxer-terrier mix, Lucy, into Lucille Ball for the costume contest. Frias brought a red wig, along with a sequined red dress for Lucy, who for a few minutes would transform into the queen of comedy. "I like it here because they have all these items I can buy for my dog," Frias said "The people are all so nice here." Janice DeMadona of Granada Hills, whose pit bull mix, Willow, had earned a blue ribbon for best dancer, said the show emphasized the importance of adopting pets through rescue groups. "I love that this is a celebration of rescue dogs," DeMadona said. "People shouldn't have to go to pet shops and breeders to adopt a dog."

22 maggio: WOODLAND HILLS -- Forget the Westminster Kennel Club and those pedigrees -- this Sunday's dog show celebrates common curs competing, performing and helping raise funds for charity. The "Nuts and Mutts" show hosted by actress Kim Basinger with celebrity judges from television and film is expected to attract scores of mixed-breed dogs. They will compete in categories like longest tail, fastest eater, best wag -- and the coveted worst breath. Organizers expect about 5,000 dog lovers to attend the event, which also includes a pet fair with vendor booths, crafts, rides and and other entertainment for children, dog agility demonstrations, animal adoptions and food. Among the participants is a dog named Sinbad, who stars in a comic strip in California Firefighters Magazine called "Workin' Like A Dog," and with other dogs teaches disaster preparedness techniques, many of which he knows in real life.  "This guy is such a character," said Sinbad's owner Betsy Baytos, a Disney animator from Glendale, who said her pooch's talents also include entertaining fans by playing the saxophone, guitar and drums. "He's really smart and he seems to know that he's here for a purpose." When not competing or performing, Sinbad will be at the California Firefighters Booth 32, doing his part to raise funds -- and the profile of the nation's working dogs. K-9 task force specialist Bob Sessions said using Sinbad to teach disaster preparedness is a great way to teach kids safety procedures. "People are going to read a comic strip before they read a directive from the Department of Homeland Security," Sessions said. Nuts for Mutts, originated by mixed-breed animal rescuers New Leash on Life, will be held at Pierce College's Shepherd Stadium, 6201 Winnetka Ave., Woodland Hills. The pet fair opens at 9 a.m. Sunday, with the dog show set for 11 a.m., and best of show judging to start at 2:40 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under, with students and seniors charged $8. A family rate of $25 is offered, and ticket price for a dog is $1.

23 maggio: STARS TURN OUT FOR B'WAY'S BEST. Big stars aren't just acting in Broadway's hottest plays, they're also turning out in droves to see them. Actress Kim Basinger recently was spotted at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre checking out the sexy cast of "The Look of Love," while singer/actress Bette Midler also caught a preview of the show and stopped backstage afterward to praise the cast's performance of 30 Bacharach & David love songs.  Basinger also took in a performance of Baz Luhrmann's production of Puccini's "La Boheme," along with opera star Placido Domingo, actor Ben Vereen, playwright Terrence McNally, director Garry Marshall, and Tony Award-winner Judith Ivey. Actors Paul Reiser, Uma Thurman, Ethan Hawke, Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen and, of course, Basinger also were all seen attending a recent performance of "Nine," starring Antonio Banderas, Chita Rivera, Jane Krakowski and Mary Stuart Masterson. Gay major league ball player Billy Bean, as well as Broadway diva Patti Lupone and Garry Marshall, attended a performance of the baseball-themed "Take Me Out." Meanwhile, "Life (x) 3" at Broadway's Circle in the Square Theater continues to draw the stars. Patrick Stewart was seen at a performance and afterward he and "Star Trek" buddy Brent Spiner, who stars in the show, went out to celebrate. Other stars spotted recently include Alfred Molina -- who starred in Yasmina Reza's "Art" -- Steenburgen and Danson, Christine Lahti, Woody Harrelson, Woody Allen and Soon-Yi, Andrea Martin, Katherine Helmond, Kitty Carlisle Hart, Kevin Spacey, Robert Sean Leonard, Dan Lauria, James van der Beek and Mary Tyler Moore. Al Roker, Charlie Rose, Peter Boyle, Joan Rivers and Peter Strauss were spotted checking out recent performances of "The Play What I Wrote." "Life (x) 3"'s Helen Hunt was seen at "Batbra's Wedding" checking out her former "Mad About You" co-star John Pankow in the cast, while Reiser, another alum of the sit-com, was seen catching a performances of "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg.".

23 maggio: JUICY ROLE - "PEOPLE I Know" director Daniel Algrant has found his next project. Insiders say he wants to make a movie out of the book "Movie Stars Don't Die in Liverpool" about the last days of film noir queen Gloria Graham. Algrant is said to favor Kim Basinger, who stars with Al Pacino in "People I Know," for the lead role. It will be hard work, since the storyline spans Graham's life from age 16 to 60.

24 maggio: Esce anche in Giappone 8 MILE. Hanson goes hip-hop with Eminem in '8 Mile'. Curtis Hanson
TOKYO — Usually when a superstar singer tries to make it big in movies, the results are less than inspiring — think Mariah Carey in "Glitter," Britney Spears in "Crossroads," Madonna in anything, and even Elvis. So director Curtis Hanson knew he would be taking a big chance in casting controversial hip-hop artist Marshal Mathers, aka Eminem, in his first major starring role in the gritty drama "8 Mile." "I forgot about him as Eminem the performer and thought of him as Marshal Mathers, Actually, I didn't even consider those other singers who have failed," said the 58-year-old Hanson during a recent visit to Tokyo. "This is not a biography, not a movie with a musical star. It is about a white man trying to find acceptance in a black community by expressing himself in a black art form." Set against the backdrop of the 1995 hip-hop scene in Detroit, "8 Mile" tells the story of Jimmy "Bunny Rabbit" Smith (Eminem), a machinist who lives with his down-and-out mother (Kim Basinger) in a trailer park, has a sexpot girlfriend (Brittany Murphy) and is targeted by a rival gang. He sees his rapping skills as a ticket out, but first he's got to get over his stage fright at the local underground rap battle contest. Eminem's lyrics criticized. A phenomenally successful artist who has sold millions of albums all over the world, Eminem has frequently been criticized for his lyrics that disparage gays and women, and glorify violence. "There's no question that hip hop often expresses many negative emotions such as homophobia and misogyny," agreed Hanson, "but in this movie, it is intriguing that Eminem plays a character who is a defender of gays and women. Hopefully, that will confuse the audience in a good way. I found Eminem to be a very trusting artist. He allowed me to see behind the public image. I wanted him to be the opposite of those big, loud performances we see him do on stage." Most of the time in "8 Mile," Eminem's character watches, absorbs things and keeps his thoughts to himself — the film is said to be semi-autobiographical in many parts. A former editor of Cinema magazine, Hanson is best known for such films as "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle" (1992), "The River Wild" (1994), "LA Confidential" (1997) and "The Wonder Boys" (2000). He found himself drawn to the early days of the hip-hop scene. "In 1995, it hadn't yet exploded in popular culture. It was bubbling. I wanted to take audiences into a world they don't often see in movies — the other side of the American dream. Detroit was once the heart of industrial America with a rich past and promising future to anyone who came there to work. Now, it doesn't promise much of anything to anybody," said Hanson, adding that he used a hand-held camera as much as he could. To be as realistic as possible, Hanson interviewed hundreds of Detroit youth for bit parts as well as "to get at the truth of their lives and capture their language." While a lot of hip-hop music and movies deal with guns, violence and drugs, Hanson said this is a stereotype he wanted to break. "Guns and drugs are not part of their day-to-day lives. Almost all these kids come from broken families, the fathers have gone and they are living with their mothers who work. So they create their own family with their friends. "In '8 Mile,' we try to show where the emotion that fuels hip hop comes from, how young men who are trying to figure out their lives sometimes express their emotions inappropriately, and how some of them — in this case, Eminem — use words as fists. Those freestyle rap battles were like a church to those young men in terms of the sense of commitment and emotional sustenance they got." "8 Mile" has been such a hit in the U.S. since its release that people have been coming up to Hanson saying they now love Eminem. "I think he has a God-given talent. You can see it in his eyes. He can go a long way in movies if he is challenged. That's why other singers have flopped on the screen. I often wonder that if Elvis had been pushed further as an actor, it would have given him something to grow into and changed his life, instead of ending up the way he did."
