The town and the promontory on which it stands are dominated by the Castle,
built by Frederic II and fortified by Charles of Anjou. A famous gift pertaining
to the Christian charity of these people, in the region of Puglia, is their
hospitality, gratified by Father Pio and named by him the house of Suffering and
of Comfort, which was joined then by the humble convent of the Cappuccini
Fathers. This place now is a Hospital donnated with the most modern sanitary
equipments. Vieste, Rodi Garganico, Pugnochiuso are connected by sea to the
Tremiti islands In summer, by a shipping line which starts from Manfredonia.
Here the charm of the landscape cannot be expressed indeed by words.
Vieste rises on the extreme eastern peak of Gargano between two sickle-shaped
beaches. From the Convent of Saint Mathew to San Marco in Lamis, the pilgrims
would gather themselves on the old route leading to San Severo, in order to
worship the Grotta (where Jesus Christ was born) and the image of the Archaengel
Michele on the mountain of Sant'Angelo. The landscape is evocative, of a
matchless beauty. All around the " faraglioni " and the reefs, the sea-gulls
unceasingly are flying about. The seashores of Rodi, San Menaio, Peschici are
with Vieste the most picturesque ones in all Gargano because of their beauty and
the width of their coasts often shaded by thick pine-woods, as also for the
surrounding country rich in orange-groves and flowered gardens. Behind the
beaches to the west and to the east, the country is luxuriant and rich with
citrus orchards and vineyards. A little bit further down you find San Giovanni
Rotondo (at 600 meters on the sea level) where still lingers the great spirit of
Father Pio of Pietrelcina, and of the pilgrimages. The Cathedral built on a
roman temple overlooks the white houses. The huge white " faraglione " called "
the Pizzomunno " rises lonely upwards.
Behind the monastery, on the cliffs of Monte Castellano, you find the monumental
Via Crucis, which is adorned by shrines, made out of solid granite, which
cherish bronze statues representing the Fourteen " stations ", having been
sculpted by a famous artist, Francesco Messina. Everywhere hospitality is kind
and moderate. The people living in these small villages, in the mountain regions,
from the solitude of these places were inspired to create fantasies, to invent
names of animals and mysterious characters who possess a magical strength. Most
of the town extends between the Castle and the roadstead limited by the cape of
San Felice, which stretches towards the reef on which rises the Tower of the
Lanterna, and by the cape of San Francesco where the small church dedicated to
the Saint is situated. During the Middle Ages, as a matter of fact, the Basilica
of San Michele, was the destination for all the pilgrims: on this place many
famous Popes and Saints have kneeled to his Grace: San Francesco D'Assisi. After
overcoming Testa del Gargano, with the rocky cliffs streching to the sea, it is
possible to visit the charming Baia delle Zagare with its green covered
faraglioni dotting the transparent and deep blue water, an Pugnochiuso with its
very modern hotel unit, a private beach in a silent creek, the swimming-pools,
restaurants, the shops of the small residential center, the hall for Conferences,
exibitions and banquets. The mountain air, coming from the forests close by, in
pure, fresh and aromatic; it helps restore your senses, damaged by the city
pollution, in a peaceful and natural way. To the south, the " Testa del Gargano
", the farthest point of the promontory stretches on the blue sea and it can be
reached through the new coast road between Vieste and Mattinata.
Puglia is a region of faith and myths. Vieste and the other centers of the
Gargano Promontory can be easily reached: by car, through the highways going
from Naples to Canosa and from Rimini to Bari; by railways, tanks to special
fast and express trains through the lines Roma-Foggia-Bari and Milano-Bari-Lecce.
The new Saint of Gargano - writes Giovanni Bronzini in his essay on " the land
and the people of Puglia " - who have inherited the attributes and the power of
the previous Garganic personalities, " who was loved and feared as Saint Michele
". The view of small town from the sea seems especially fit for the nature which
surround it: the white and narrow houses lean one upon the other, in rows here
and there broken by stair-alleys, often surmounted by flowery arches, and by
very small squares.
San Giovanni Rotonto, placed on the peak of Gargano, is an ideal place to spend,
in spiritual serenity, a healthy vacation, far away from the frenetic daily
life. Vieste is the queen of Cape Gargano, at the center of a natural landscape
which is one of the most beautiful in the world. These legends and traditions,
created by the inhabitants of this region, took roots in their lives, in the
wilderness, which later on was superposed by the Christian faith, therefore
changing all these legendary names into Archaengels and Saints. The hotel and
tourist facilities of Vieste, Peschici, Pugnochiuso, San Menaio and other places
are modern, irreproachable and provided with all comforts. Even now crowds of
pilgrims and of tourists coming from all regions of Italy and from all over the
world, come to San Giovanni Rotondo, to pray to His Tomb on the Krypton of the
Sanctuary of Saint Mary Delle Grazie, and to beg the Lord to cure them of all
spiritual and physical evils. To the south, where the promontory fails
perpendicularly to the sea with a high rocky wall, the soft and white beach
called "of the Castle " extends on a slight slope to the sea. The mark that the
Seraphic (angel), left having posed his cheek against the stone, which is still
being shown to all the tourists; and also many other saints like Santa Caterina
Da Siena, and San Tommaso D'Aquino. The white Vieste "whose name us as light and
kind as the hesitation of a first half-closed kiss ", exerts a great charm on
the soul and feelings, of those people who visit it and stay there, and this
whether they be poets or simple tourists.
The Premontory is rich in Sanctuaries and Monasteries: at San Marco in Lamis, at
Monte Sant'Angelo, at San Giovanni Rotondo. And then Mattinata, with its roofs
of a dazzling whiteness in the green of olive and almond trees, whose name -
Bacchelli recalls - is linked to the rising hour of the day. In the summer time
it is easy to get to the beach on the Garganic Riviera, since it is placed at a
short distance. Beyond the cape of San Felice the large beach of San Lorenzo
stretches for seven kilometers to north-east of Vieste. The legends, the
traditions, the superstitions, are still alive among these people who are
bewildered by the picturesque and mysterious scenery of the Gargano, of the
Apennines Mountaines, of the Murge, and of the enchanting Umbria Forest. And
then you can see Rodi Garganico, white on a rock, San Menaio, Peschici, also
laid down on a small rocky promontory, a mild and bright center with its gilted
beach and the low houses dominated by the medieval Castle.
