Chordata, Amphibia, Caudata

Amphibia, Caudata, Plethodontidae, Speleomantes strinatii (Aellen, 1958) - It is the "Geotritone" (earth newt), eutroglophilesalamander that feed insects in the parts of the caves near the entrance. It has remarkable adaptations to the hypogean life in environment saturated of humidity, like the exclusively cutaneous breathing, with atrophy of the lungs and an extremely slow eggs development. This species is widespread in most of the Cuneese and it's possible find it regularly both in the Bear Cave of Ponte di Nava and in the Bandits Cave in the Gesso Valley. The systematic of the genus is debated and has been object of electrophoretical studies by some italian specialists. Also the name of the genus changed from Speleomantes to Hydromantes and vice versa more than a time and the populations of this Amphibian are differentiated and widespread along the Ligurian Alps. (Size: until 8-10 cm).
