Mammalia, Chiroptera, Rhinolophidae, Rhinolophus hipposideros (Bechstein, 1800) - It is the "Ferro di Cavallo minore" (smaller Horseshoe), so-called because of the shape of the nasal cartilages. It is a troglophile bat widespread in Europe, central Asia and on the coast of the northern Africa. The caves in which the author observed frequently this species are the Bear Cave of Ponte di Nava and the Veins Cave. The rest position of the Rhinolophidae is characteristic: they retract the head and wrap themselves completely with the wing membrane. On respect to the greater Horseshoe (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum), the size of R. hipposideros is smaller: generally we say as an example that the smaller Horseshoe is long like a human thumb and the greater is large like a fist.
