Cavity that opens in the marble from which has been obtained most of the rock with which has been built the Milan Cathedral. In order to enter into this cave it's necessary to have a permission of entrance by the "Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano" (Venerable factory of the Milan Cathedral) that has the contract for the exploitation of the mines situated above the built-up of Mergozzo.
This cave is a prevalently vertical cavity in which we enter through the narrow entrance followed by a series of pits.
Among the faunal entities recently (1998) found by the author, we can cite Ischyropsalis cfr. carli
, a Crustacean Isopoda Trichoniscidae, Diplopoda Craspedosomatidae, Araneae Linyphiidae, prob. Troglohyphantes sp. , among the Mollusca Gastropoda: Vitrea subrinata and Oxychilus mortilleti (det. Elena Gavetti, M.R.S.N.T.) and among the Carabidae, Sphodropsis ghilianii. There aren't true troglobite organisms probably because of the fact that the not much high altitude of the cave was under the top of the valley floor glacier that flowed in the Toce Valley during the last glaciation.BIBLIOGRAPHY |
