Sphodropsis ghilianii (Schaum, 1858) - It is a classic eutroglophile insect, widespread in all the western Alps, both in the caves and in endogean environment. It is colorless, like the Trechinae, more specialized (the brown-reddish color is the natural one of the chitin without pigments). Already in the larval stage it is a very active predator on the top of the ecological pyramid together to a little number of Arthropods, in the not much deep zones of the caves. Like all the cave-dwelling insects, when it get out from the pupa, it has a very light color but after, gradually, get darker in time. The author collected a lot of specimens in several different caves, from the Novara province to the southern Cuneese. (Real size of the body: about 15 mm).Other images:
