    Roots of Modernist Church Architecture
In this article from Adoremus Bulletin Duncan Stroik, professor of architecture
    at Notre Dame University,...

  • The art of our own times from every race and country shall also be given free scope in the Church, provided it bring to the task the reverence and honor due to the sacred buildings and rites"

  • - Robert Krier To many educated observers, it would seem that the reductionist buildings commissioned for Roman Catholic worship today are the direct corollary of Church teaching, modern liturgical studies and contemporary theology

  • Indeed, in the 1960s after the Vatican Council, there was a great surge of construction of austere churches which often resembled commercial or factory buildings, bearing out the belief that they were mandated by the spirit of Vatican II

  • The Church willingly accepted and even adopted the architecture of the secular realm for its sacred buildings

  • The concepts of the church as auditorium and theater in the round derive from early Calvinist buildings which were designed to enable people to see and hear the preacher, such as at Charenton, France

  • Modernism was particularly attracted to the auditorium and theater types because of their scientific claims to acoustical and visual correctness, as well as the belief that the form of a building should be determined by its function

    Community Christian Church
Kansas City, Missouri, church and "steeple of light" designed by Frank Lloyd
Wright are still in use by a Disciples of Christ congregation.

  • In April, 1940, Frank Lloyd Wright, world renowned architect, was commissioned to design a new building for the congregation after the burning of their building on Linwood Boulevard

  • Wright envisioned the entire property at 46 th and Main Streets being devoted to parking with the church building supported on graceful pillars, similar to the mushroom-shaped supports at the Johnson Wax Company office building in Racine, Wisconsin

  • It was expected that the new church building would be no exception

  • The idea of air-conditioning for the building was met with much disfavor from Wright exclaiming "I’ve gotten more colds in so-called air-conditioned buildings than any other place." He went on to explain that the building he envisioned would be comfortably cool in the summer and warm in the winter using a floor heating and cooling system

  • Parking for 150 cars was allowed; construction of the building would be of steel and rose-tinted concrete

  • Wright claimed the building would be "fireproof, earthquake, and vermin-proof" and upkeep would be virtually nil

  • Wright also claimed that "it is no mere church building, but a new order dated 10 years ahead of its time." The first drawing of the Frank Lloyd Wright design concept was published in The Kansas City Star on June 13, 1940

Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church
Tombstone. History, schedule of services, contact information.

  • Church services were held in any vacant room or closed bar and the need for a decent church building was quite evident! In 1879, Rev

  • Led by Nellie Cashman 'Angel of the Camp', the citizens of Tombstone raised money to build a one and one-half story adobe building that housed a rectory on the top floor and a church on the bottom floor

  • This church-rectory was dedicated as Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church on January 1, 1881, becoming the first church building of any denomination in Tombstone

  • In 1882, a second wooden Catholic Church building was constructed

  • This allowed the 1881 building to be used solely as a rectory

  • This church building served the Tombstone Community until 1947 when it was moved to its present location

  • A new 1947 church building was constructed at the corner of N

  • Today, under the fine direction of Father John Fahey (Pastor 1999-2003), all three church buildings have been lovingly restored to their former glory

  • The area between the church buildings and the Rose Garden is filled with curved pathways, park benches, historic outdoor lighting fixtures, flower gardens, and presents a restful atmosphere to residents and visitors alike! The restored 1881 church-rectory serves as church offices, the restored 1882 church building serves as the church hall, and an improved 1947 church building continues to be used for church services

  • CHURCH BUILDING ?

    St Mary's Church
    An Episcopal church in Kyoto.

  • Unfortunately this lovely church building that held so many memories had to be demolished in 1996, as a result of damage caused by the Hanshin (Kobe) earthquake in 1995

  • The congregation is planning to build a new church, and is now raising the money in the hope that we may complete the new building by the year 2000

  • In the meantime, we hold Sunday services in the kindergarten hall next door to where the church building used to be

  • The building is gone, but the church itself continues to live and grow in the community of its members
