Louis Sullivan after functionalism by Michael J. Lewis Michael J. Lewis examines Sullivan's place in history and the role of ornament
in his work. Article from the New Criterion, with references.
Hugh Morrison, author of Louis Sullivan: Prophet of Modern Architecture (1935), disavowed the “overwrought lyricism of his ornament.” Sigfried Giedion’s Space, Time, and Architecture (1941) took the next step, cropping a photograph of the Carson Pirie Scott store so as to omit both cornice and ground level, showing only the crisp skeletal cage of its middle stories
Richardson’s Marshall Field Store in Chicago, with its colossal masses assembled in majestic repose—and the Auditorium has a markedly sculptural quality, Sullivan’s first truly architectonic work
S ullivan’s run of tall buildings came to an end in 1902 when he designed the second wing of the Carson Pirie Scott store (originally Schlessinger & Mayer)
His practice collapsed, virtually overnight, and from then until his death in 1924 he subsisted on a trickle of provincial banks and stores, scattered over the rural Midwest
In his last work, the Krause Music Store, a powerful stalk seems to grow upon the wall of a diminutive storefront to burst across the cornice into a floral efflorescence, fulfilling Sullivan’s demand that architectural ornament should appear “as though the outworking of some beneficent agency it had come forth from the very substance of the material and was there by the same right that a flower appears amid the leaves of its parent plant.” Such triumphs were sporadic, and in general Sullivan’s final two decades were bleak
