● the only birth that can be found for a Martha Wigley in the early 1770’s, ie. who would have been old enough to be this William’s mother, is Martha I, who was also born in Diddlebury

● so it is possible that Martha I was William’s mother

● likewise, when a Martha Wigley married a John Could in 1797, it is not definite that this was Martha I, but possible – he might even have been William’s biological father

● whether or not William was John’s son, if Martha really did marry the latter, why was William not brought up as “William Could”, as often happened in those days? Unless of course, for some reason, William was, say, brought up by his Wigley grandparents, and so always retained that surname

● a witness at the marriage was a Margaret Wigley – Martha does not appear to have had any sisters named Margaret – unless it was actually her younger sister Peggy - and her brother John did not marry his wife Margaret until 1801

● if Martha I really did marry John Could, the following data could be relevant:

● a Martha Cound died Q3 1849, Ludlow, Shropshire R/D, age 81^BMD (so born about 1768), and was buried 12 JUL 1849, Diddlebury, Shropshire, abode Corfton, Shropshire, age 81^CERT

● a John Cound, died Q2 1850, Ludlow, Shropshire R/D, age 87^BMD (so born about 1763), and was buried 3 APR 1850, Diddlebury, Shropshire, abode Corfton, Shropshire, age 87^CERT

● Corfton is only a few km from, and in the parish of, Diddlebury, which was in Ludlow, Shropshire R/D

● an 1841 census record, which is unfortunately almost illegible, shows:

John Cound? 80 (so born about 1757-61), agricultural labourer?

Martha Cound?, 75 (so born about 1762-6)

William Cound? 40 (so born about 1797-1801), occupation illegible, no relationship shown, possibly, but not necessarily, their son

all born in Shropshire, living at Corfton, Shropshire

● a William Cound appears in the 1851 census: head, unmarried, 54 (so born about 1797), born Diddlebury, Shropshire, carpenter, living in Corfton, Shropshire

● 2 William Counds died in 1860 in Ludlow, Shropshire R/D:

• Q1 1860, age 81 (so born about 1779)

• Q4 1860, age 65 (so born about 1795)

● if he was born 1795-7, or after 24 MAY 1797 (if born in wedlock), it would make him born very close to William Wigley V

● no definite baptism record in the parish of Diddlebury in this period can be found for this William Cound

● a very faint baptism record in Diddlebury seems to read:

William, son of John and Mary?? G…?? was baptized May ..?? 1796, but this would be before Martha and John were married

● in the 1851 census William Cound stated that he was unmarried, and if he died in 1860, it is possible that he did not have any descent

● if indeed Martha I really was the mother of both children, it is notable that they were both called William, and makes it less likely that John Could was actually the father of William Wigley V, as John and Martha possibly went on to have their own son William - whereas, had John been the father, he and Martha might have brought him up together, and called him William Cound, John’s son or stepson, as often happened

● as no baptism record can be found for William Cound, had he and William V not both appeared separately in the 1841 census, it might have been possible that the William Wigley baptized in 1796 was later called William Could

● in the various census and baptism, death and burial records the 2 Williams’ approximate year of births (shown in brackets) can be calculated as below

● this shows that William V might not necessarily have been born in 1796

● strangely, in the 1871 census James was a servant in the same household as an Eliza Hartshorn, age 13 (so born about 1858), who would have been about 22 when Thomas William Wigley I was born, one of whose possible mother's maiden names was Hartshorn (SEE BELOW), so James might even have been Thomas William’s father, had it not been for the fact that there is no record of a Wigley/Hartshorn marriage in this period - see notes on James’ father’s page
