● the marriage certificate shows Eliza’s residence as Wyre Common [Neen Savage], the same as John’s, the latter’s father’s home in the 1841 and 1851 census

● her father is shown as “Edward Wigley, shoemaker”

● the first assumption would be that she is John’s cousin, daughter of John’s father’s brother, EDWARD WIGLEY I, who however moved to Worcestershire before 1817, but WAS listed in various census as a shoemaker

● in fact, in the various census Eliza is shown as born in Kiddderminster, Worcs, about 1823

● the only baptism found in Worcestershire for an Eliza Wigley is on 8 JUN 1824 at Kidderminster, Worcs, father Edward Wigley and Ann

● but Edward Wigley I‘s wife’s name in the 1841 and 1851 census was Elizabeth, and there are several baptisms for the couple in Kidderminster, Worcs in the 1830’s

● admittedly, no marriage has been found for Edward and Elizabeth, as they could have been married in any county between Shropshire and Worcestershire, and in the only useful census that Elizabeth appears, her birthplace is shown as “unknown”

● on the other hand, there are several baptisms for children of Edward Wigley and Ann, including Eliza, in Kidderminster, Worcs in the 1820’s

● again no marriage can been found for Edward and Ann, and no Edward Wigley, wife Ann, can be found in the 1841 and 1851 census

● there is of course the marriage of an Edward Wigley and Ann George on 12 JAN 1812 in Boughton Aluph, Kent, which the author at one time thought might be for a related Wigley, especially as it took place in Boughton Aluph, Kent, where Edward Wigley I‘s brother John Wigley IV, founder of the Kent line, was married in 1805, but later discounted – nothing further has been found on this Edward and Ann

● a witness at this marriage was a Mary Wigley, who MAY have been Edward Wigley sister-in-law, John Wigley IV’s wife Mary – had it been John himself, the relationship would have been almost certain

● both John and Edward were able to sign their names in their marriage records

● but one correspondent has suggested that this Edward might be the Edward who moved to Kidderminster, ie. that he was in fact Edward I, moved, either with or after his elder brother John IV to Kent, married Ann George there, THEN moved (back up north) to Worcestershire

● taking this theory further, Ann might have died young (ie. at the end of 1820’s, before regular census taking started in 1841), as baptisms for children of Edward and Ann have only been found in the 1820’s, and nothing further can be found on Edward and Ann, after which Edward remarried, to Elizabeth, and had more children in the 1830’s

● in fact, in the census Elizabeth is shown as being 15 years younger than Edward - so possibly his 2^nd wife - who was baptized in 1786, so in his 40’s when the later children were born

● another correspondent, CEO of TWA Inc – The Wigleys of America™, who is descended from Thomas Wigley VI, born about 1817 in Kidderminster, Worcs, has him as son of Edward I, which would be strange, although not physically impossible, if Edward was still mass producing children in the 1830’s, 20 years later!

● this is of course pure supposition, and should be treated as such

● on the other hand, it is unlikely that there would be two Edward Wigleys in Kidderminster in this period, both shoemakers, but who never appear contemporaneously – or if there were, that they would be unrelated – especially as “Edward A“’s daughter Eliza was living at the time of her marriage at “Edward B”’s home!

● an Eliza Wigley was shown in John’s father Charles III’s 1841 census record, where relationships were not shown, age 28, but NOT born in Shropshire, whereas his 2 sons were born in Shropshire

● could she be his niece, and later daughter-in-law, Eliza, born in Worcestershire, already living with her uncle in 1841, but who would have been 28, not 18?

NOTE: whereas Shropshire parish records are now largely available online, those for Worcestershire are unfortunately not

● a John and an Eliza Wigley, born more or less when they were born, both died in Kidderminster, Worcs R/D in the 1880’s, so this MIGHT have been them
