UNION SQUARE - English version - part two

INT. GLORIA's HOUSE. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Gloria is ready to go out for the evening. From outside, a CAR HORN is heard. Gerry enters.

GERRY

So! Where are we going?

Gloria looks at him, embarrassed.

GLORIA

I'm sorry, you misunderstood. We're not going anywhere.

I'm going out with Bruce. I only wanted you try on tuxedo

Outside, Bruce is honking the horn.

GLORIA

That's Bruce. Really, I'm terribly sorry. Some other time,

okay? Meanwhile, you stay here and practice your speech.

Work on the "H's."

Gloria turns on a tape recorder.

GERRY's VOICE (recorded)

Honey, high, homeless. I have a home. You have a hat.

In his house, he puts his hat on his head.

Gerry looks hurt and sad. Gloria takes pity and kisses him on the cheek.

GLORIA

I really am terribly sorry. Good night.

Gloria exits.

GERRY'S VOICE (recorded)

Hi, honey, are you heading for--

Gerry turns off the recorder and slams his fist against the table.

GERRY

Hell!

EXT. GLORIA's HOUSE. STREET - NIGHT

Gerry runs out of the house and to the curb. He sees Gloria in Bruce's red Ferrari. Bruce puts his foot on the pedal and quickly drives down the street.

EXT. CALIFORNIA STREET - NIGHT

The Ferrari stops at a red light. Several yards behind, Gerry is running after it.

INT/EXT. - FERRARI - NIGHT

Bruce puts a cigar in his mouth.

BRUCE

This feels right, doesn't it? We belong together, Gloria.

Can't you see that?

GLORIA

I don't know, Bruce. Trust is important in a relationship.

And I don't trust you anymore.

BRUCE

Why not? Because I made one small mistake?

GLORIA

I don't think taking another woman into bed, my bed,

qualifies as one small mistake.

BRUCE

Give me a break, Gloria. I was drunk.

GLORIA

That's two mistakes. Big ones.

BRUCE

I don't even remember why I went to bed with her.

GLORIA

Three.

BRUCE

You're keeping count of my transgressions?

GLORIA

Not really. I can't count that high.

BRUCE

What's happened to you? You used to be more forgiving.

They stop at a traffic light. Gerry is several blocks behind and is running to catch up. Gloria opens her purse and removes a matchbook. She strikes a match and lights Bruce's cigar. Then she studies the match.

GLORIA

Maybe I'm like this match. Maybe you've struck me once

too often and now there's just no spark left.

From inside her purse, Gerry's chain shines, attracting Bruce's attention.

BRUCE

What's that?

GLORIA

It's Gerry's.

Gloria pulls out the chain.

GLORIA

He uses it to unlock doors. The magnet makes the key turn.

Very clever, don't you think?

Bruce takes the chain. He glances at it, then reaches over and tosses it into the glove compartment.

BRUCE

Very clever. Breaking into people's homes so he can murder

them in their sleep.

The light changes and Bruce drives away.

EXT. CITY STREET - NIGHT

Gerry stops chasing the car. He sees a taxi approach, hails it and gets in.

GERRY

There's a red Ferrari up ahead. Follow it.

INT. TAXI - NIGHT

CAB DRIVER

Mind telling me why we're chasing down a Ferrari, buddy?

Gerry doesn't answer. He's staring out the windshield.

CAB DRIVER

It's usually one of two reasons. Love or money.

GERRY

It's the first one.

CAB DRIVER

For love, I'd risk a ticket. Hang on.

Gerry and the driver fall back in their seats as the driver accelerates.

EXT. FISHERMAN'S WHARF. RESTAURANT - NIGHT

Bruce's car is parked out front. Behind it is Gerry's taxi. The driver is leaning against the cab, smoking a cigarette. Gerry is standing in front of the restaurant window, his nose pressed against the glass, peering inside. He looks as if he's about to cry.

INT. RESTAURANT - NIGHT

Bruce and Gloria are seated in a booth. There are three wine bottles on the table--two are empty and one is almost empty. They are eating shrimp cocktails. Bruce takes a shrimp from his dish and reaches across the table. Gloria slowly opens her mouth and lets Bruce feed her.

BRUCE

Let's drink to love.

Gloria smiles and lifts her glass.

GLORIA

Sure, why not? I propose a toast to love. The way you

love me in your way and I love me in my way. And you

love you--

BRUCE

I'm serious. Say you'll change your mind and marry me.

Outside, Gerry suffers, as he continues to watch them through the window.

INT. DIMLY LIT COCKTAIL LOUNGE - NIGHT

Gerry is seated at the bar, in front of several empty glasses. He gestures to the bartender to bring him a refill. He is

watching Bruce and Gloria dance. They're dancing closely and Bruce is stroking Gloria's back. Gerry sways on the stool, trying to maintain his balance. Tears run down his cheeks as Bruce kisses Gloria's hair, then her ear. Bruce and Gloria return to their table and Bruce puts some money down. They leave. Gerry jumps off the barstool and starts to follow, but the bartender grabs his arm.

BARTENDER

That'll be eighty-four dollars, fella.

GERRY

Sure.

Gerry reaches into his pocket, then falls on the floor. The GENTLEMAN next to him gets off his stool and helps Gerry up.

GERRY

Thanks.

GENTLEMAN

Don't mention it. Been there myself.

Gerry takes a wallet out of his pocket and opens it. Inside is a photo of the gentleman and a woman. Gerry pays the bartender, then shakes the gentleman's hand. Unknown to the gentleman, Gerry has just slipped the wallet back into its owner's pocket.

EXT. DIMLY LIT COCKTAIL LOUNGE - NIGHT

Gerry exits and staggers toward the taxi parked at the curb. He loses his balance and the cab driver comes to his aid.

CAB DRIVER

You okay, buddy? Listen, the cheap broad ain't worth it.

GERRY (seizing the driver's jacket)

Cheap broad? Not my Gloria!

CAB DRIVER

Take it easy! I was just trying to console you!

GERRY

It's not her fault. It's that snake.

Bruce and Gloria are walking down the street.

BRUCE

Let's leave the car in the garage and stroll back to my place.

GLORIA

The fresh air is a good idea, but why your place?

BRUCE

It's not very far and I don't have a house guest.

Gerry pushes the taxi driver away and starts to follow them. The driver holds on to him.

CAB DRIVER

Hate to add to your troubles, buddy. But you owe me two

hundred ten dollars.

Gerry searches his pockets, but his hands come out empty. He extends his right hand for a handshake.

GERRY

Didn't you say you'd follow them for love?

CAB DRIVER

Not exactly. Two hundred and ten, pal.

Magically, a wallet appears in Gerry's hand. He opens it, takes out two hundred and fifty dollars and gives it to the driver.

CAB DRIVER

What a coincidence! You and me got the same wallet!

GERRY

Funny...lots of people tell me that.

The wallet disappears again. The driver reaches into his pocket and pulls out his wallet. Gerry staggers off after Bruce and Gloria, while the driver puts the money into the wallet.

CAB DRIVER

Forty dollar tip...not bad.

EXT. BRUCE's HOUSE - NIGHT

Bruce and Gloria arrive in front of Bruce's house.

GLORIA

I'm sorry you don't like Gerry. He didn't have the advantage

of an education, but he knows a lot of things...he's very intelligent.

BRUCE

I think he's dangerous. I know his kind. They survive by stealing.

He'd kill his father for his shoes.

GLORIA

He's not like that at all. He's good and kind and--

BRUCE

You're very quick to come to his defense.

GLORIA

Am I?

BRUCE (mimicking Gloria)

He's good and kind and so very, very endearing.

GLORIA

You're jealous!

BRUCE

Jealous? Me? The next governor, jealous of a foul-smelling

bum who blows his nose in his hands. That's rich! But I

don't want to talk about him. Let's talk about us.

Bruce puts his arms around Gloria and starts to kiss her.

Suddenly, from the cover of darkness, a knife-wielding HOODED MAN lunges at them. He grabs Gloria and puts his hand over her mouth so she can't scream. The other hand is around Bruce's throat and the knife is pressed against it.

HOODED MAN (fake voice)

Pretty lady, you got. I'll take over now. Show her what

a real man can do. You got a problem with that, buddy?

The assailant presses the blade deeper against Bruce's throat. Paralyzed by fear, Bruce doesn't respond. Gloria bites the attacker's hand, but he doesn't let go. Instead, the knife accidentally nicks Bruce's skin. Bruce cries out and the assailant lowers the knife. Seizing the opportunity, Bruce shouts to Gloria...

BRUCE

I'm going for the police!

...and runs away. Gloria bites the attacker's hand again and this time he releases her.

HOODED MAN (fake voice)

So a lady doesn't eat meat with a fork...when she's mad enough.

Gerry removes the hood and sucks on his injured hand. Gloria stares at him in amazement; a boyish grin appears on Gerry's face. She realizes the game he's been playing.

GLORIA (shouting)

Bruce! Bruce! Come back! Bruce!

GERRY

No use. Your big brave boyfriend's gone. I bet he's in

Oakland by now.

An angry Gloria furiously and repeatedly punches Gerry on the chest. He remains still and takes the beating.

GLORIA

You muthafucka bastard! I could kill you!

Gerry shakes his head sadly.

GERRY

Why are you taking it out on me? I didn't run away and

leave you alone with a rapist.

Gloria stops punching Gerry and looks at him.

INT. GLORIA's HOUSE. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

The telephone rings and Gloria answers it. Gerry is sitting on the sofa, sucking his wounded hand.

GLORIA (to the phone)

Bruce? I've been trying to reach you.

INT. BRUCE's HOUSE. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Bruce is stretched out on his bed.

BRUCE (to the phone)

I went to find a policeman. When I returned, you and

the assailant were gone. Did you run away?

INT. GLORIA's HOUSE. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

GLORIA (to the phone)

No, that seems to be your specialty. Gerry rescued me.

BRUCE (phone voice)

Gerry? What was he doing at my house?

GLORIA (to the phone)

I'll remember to ask him the next time...no, I'm fine.

Let me speak with the officer and I'll explain.

INT. BRUCE's HOUSE. BEDROOM - NIGHT

BRUCE (to the phone)

The officer? To tell you the truth, I didn't exactly return

with an officer. I considered it, but then thought

it best to keep my name out of the papers.

INT. GLORIA's HOUSE. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

GLORIA (to the phone)

I see. Now, why didn't I think of that? Stupid me.

A raped girlfriend isn't a big political asset, is it? I'm tired,

Bruce, let me go...good night.

Gloria hangs up. A trumpet note grabs her attention. It's Gerry, playing a soothing melody.

GLORIA

I didn't know you could play. I thought you kept it just for

the memories.

GERRY

Yeah, for the memories...but it's also Old Washington's voice.

I hear him sometimes...in my head. Listen, he's comforting you.

Gerry starts to play again and Gloria is touched by the sweet music. Her eyes fill with tears as she listens. Gerry stops and they look into each other's eyes. He takes a few steps toward her, but she backs away.

GLORIA

I'm exhausted. We'll talk tomorrow.

Gerry puts the trumpet to his mouth as Gloria exits.

INT. GLORIA's HOUSE. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Gloria enters and locks the door with the key. She sits on the edge of the bed, listening and staring at the door. Gerry's playing a sexy melody; the kind associated with love scenes in old films. Gloria unlocks the door. She returns to the bed, listens and waits. Gerry stops playing. He is coming upstairs. He pauses briefly at her door, then leaves.

INT. GLORIA's HOUSE. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Gloria enters the empty room. The trumpet is on the sofa. She sits down and picks it up. She puts it to her ear and listens.

GLORIA (to herself)

Stupid girl. What do you expect to hear?

She cradles the trumpet in her arms.

INT. GLORIA's HOUSE. BATHROOM - NIGHT

Gerry is in the shower and the bathroom door is slightly ajar. Gloria approaches and spies on him. It is easy to see him through the glass shower door. His eyes are closed and his face is under the shower spray. Quietly, Gloria enters and slowly opens the shower door a few inches. She watches Gerry. His body is muscular and marked by scars and tatoos.

A WATER DROP falls from his wet hair to his neck, then slowly travels to his chest and upper abdomen.

Gloria stands at the shower door watching him. She watches with fascination, as another WATER DROP falls from Gerry's hair to the back of his neck and upper back. It finds the spinal groove and follows it down toward the back of his waist.

GLORIA

Why did you pretend to attack us tonight?

Gerry opens his eyes. He soaps his chest, neck and face.

GERRY

To open up your eyes.

Gerry closes his eyes and rinses his face.

GLORIA

To open my eyes to what?

Gerry opens his eyes and looks at Gloria. The shower door is wide open and she is looking at him with a challenging stare. Gerry extends a hand and gently brushes her cheek with his fingertips. She takes a step closer and he does, too. He takes her face in his hands. He looks at her as if he's worshiping something sacred. Then he kisses her gently on the mouth. Gloria returns his kiss, gently at first, then with growing passion. She steps into the shower and they kiss passionately under the water spray.

INT. GLORIA'S HOUSE. BEDROOM - DAY

Gerry is sleeping in Gloria's bed and she's getting dressed. He opens his eyes and watches her for a few moments.

GERRY

I can't believe I can finally stop looking.

GLORIA

For what?

GERRY

Love.

GLORIA (avoiding eye contact)

Look, Gerry. Don't read too much into what happened

last night. We got carried away and had sex, that's all.

It was great sex, but it didn't really mean anything.

You're just my business associate.

GERRY

Business associate.

GLORIA

Yes.

GERRY

Great sex isn’t enough.

GLORIA

Enough for what? Fred's waiting for you at the office.

Has a few things he needs you to sign. I'll give you

some money...you can take a cab.

Gerry nods slowly. He clenches his jaw and narrows one eye as he watches Gloria dress.

GERRY (quietly)

Business associate.

GLORIA (turning to him)

Sorry?

GERRY

Me too.

Gerry tries to hide his disappointment. He smiles.

GERRY

Yeah! Okay! Sex for fun and profit. I get it. Glad you

had fun. Now where's my profit?

GLORIA

What?

GERRY

The cash.

GLORIA

Oh! Right.

She takes some money out of her purse and puts it on the dresser.

GERRY

Ain’t enough. Next time negotiate before.

GLORIA

No time for jokes, Gerry.

She glances quickly at Gerry, then leaves.

EXT. SAN FRANCISCO BAY. SAUSALITO FERRY - DAY

The ferry is crossing the bay and is passing Alcatraz. People are on deck, taking photos of the island. With them is Gerry, who is standing at the back of the boat, staring at the water with tear-filled eyes. Seagulls are circling above the boat. He hears the trumpet solo. It is very loud, as if Old Washington were standing next to him. He looks about, but doesn't see the old man. Instead, he notices Fred Ross, a short distance away, walking toward a portly man. The man is JOHN HENZE, sixties, wearing an expensive suit. He points inside and starts to walk in that direction. Fred follows. The men buy a couple of drinks and find an empty table. Gerry takes a seat nearby and eavesdrops on the conversation.

FRED

Mr. Henze, John, listen. I'd do it for nothing. Believe me.

I'd love nothing better than to see Hickman and that

lawyer-girlfriend of his go down.

HENZE

Very generous of you, Ross. But not very smart.

Our campaign treasurer has already allocated the money.

Take the hundred grand! I'd take it if my wife got screwed

by my boss! What do they say? Getting rich is the best

reward, right?

FRED (smiling bitterly)

I rewrote the books and that ignorant bum signed them all.

He doesn't know what kind of trouble he's in.

HENZE

So let him hang with the others. The Feds are going to stick

those books so high up Hickman's ass, he'll never sit in the

governor's chair. Imagine the look on his face when he realizes

you're the one who turned him in.

FRED

Your boss will be a shoe-in then.

HENZE

No doubt about it. And California will get the governor they

deserve.

They laugh. Henze and Fred lift their glasses and toast their alliance.

INT. SAUSALITO RESORT BUILDING. BRUCE's OFFICE - DAY

Gerry is at his desk. His shirt is partially unbuttoned and his tie is loosened. He's in his stocking feet, with his legs stretched out on the desk. He's eating a hot dog smothered in onions. He's looking at the photo of Gloria on his desk and is talking to it.

GERRY

So I'm just a business associate, huh, Miss Gable?

Nothing personal between us. So, if they're gonna frame

you along with your boyfriend, hey, it ain't nothin' to me.

Just do the job you hired me to do. Fine.

Fred Ross races in; he seems terrified.

FRED

They just arrived! Tell them I'm not here! Tell them...

I don't exist!

Fred rushes out, leaving the door open. Two FBI AGENTS, wearing dark suits and looking alike, walk in.

FIRST AGENT

Where's the fire?

GERRY

No fire. Time is money. Don't waste mine. Can I help you guys?

He reaches under his desk to look for his shoes.

FIRST AGENT

We're FBI.

GERRY (to himself)

Shit.

He finds only one shoe, which he picks up with his right hand. Then he gets up to greet the agents. He offers his right hand for a handshake and realizes his shoe is in it. He quickly drops the shoe, which lands on his foot. He stifles a cry of pain. Visibly shaken, he manages to shake hands with one agent. In his confusion and panic, he bows perfectly to the other, takes his hand and kisses it. The two agents look at each other, then at Gerry.

FIRST AGENT.

We're FBI. You're not the CEO...

SECOND AGENT

...of the Sausalito Resort, are you?

GERRY

Yeah, that's me. The CEO, the BG... you know, the fuckin'

Big Guy.

He returns to his desk and looks at Gloria's photo. It's back to normal. He takes several deep breaths, trying to regain composure.

GERRY (to the agents)

Excuse me, gentlemen.

He picks up the phone and dials.

GERRY (to the phone)

Fred Ross, please.

JOAN'S PHONE VOICE

He's out of here. Miss Gables's on the way.

Gerry hangs up.

FIRST AGENT

We're here to investigate.

SECOND AGENT

May we please see your accounting books?

GERRY

No! I mean...yeah! But that's boring stuff. Let me show

you something funny. Look here.

He removes his jacket and rolls up a sleeve. He shows them a tatoo of a hula girl. He flexes his muscle and she moves.

GERRY

Want to hear how I got it? Years ago, in--

FIRST AGENT

Not right now, Mr...?

GERRY

Echevarria. Gerry. I have a better one here.

He goes to the door and looks down the hall, but everyone seems to have left the building. He begins to roll up the other sleeve.

FIRST AGENT

Perhaps you don't understand.

SECOND AGENT

We're FBI.

In unison, the agents take their badges out of their jacket pockets and hold them up for Gerry to see.

GERRY

FBI agents! Oh! Sorry. Didn't know. Uh, you guys

sure don't look like Sean Connery and Kevin Costner!

Gerry starts to chuckle. The agents remain solemn.

SECOND AGENT

Not on our team.

One of the agents spots a ledger on the desk.

FIRST AGENT

How long have you been directing this company?

Gerry swallows hard, takes a breath and waves a finger in the air.

GERRY

How long indeed? Time is funny, you know?

As Agostino once said, if you don't ask me about time,

then I don't know nothing about it. But if you ask me...

EXT. SAUSALITO RESORT BUILDING - DAY

Gloria walks quickly to the front door and is met by Fred.

FRED

The Feds are about to discover everything! Including

the obvious fact that everybody lied about Echevarria.

I can't go to jail! What about my wife and kids?

GLORIA

Be quiet, Fred.

FRED

Maybe I should make a deal with the Feds.

GLORIA

Calm yourself. Look. Go home, take a Valium or something

And wait for Bruce. He'll call you, okay? And please, don't make

any decisions you're going to regret.

Fred nods and starts to go. After a few steps, he turns back to watch Gloria go inside. He smiles.

INT. SAUSALITO RESORT BUILDING. BRUCE's OFFICE - DAY

FIRST AGENT

I'm sorry, sir.

SECOND AGENT

We have to inform you that the ledgers are suspect.

GERRY

Suspect? You're not sure?

FIRST AGENT

Not sure of what, sir?

GERRY

Damn if I know. That they're books?

SECOND AGENT

We know they're books.

FIRST AGENT

But we think they've been doctored.

GERRY

Well, they may be a little weak, but I don't think anybody

called a doctor.

The baffled agents look at Gerry, then at each other.

GLORIA (off)

Hello, gentlemen. I'm Mr.Echevarria's attorney.

SECOND AGENT

Hope you're a good one, madam. He's going to need it.

FIRST AGENT

We're going to be seizing all records.

SECOND AGENT

We'll be taking them with us.

FIRST AGENT

Mr. Echevarria, please don't leave town.

SECOND AGENT

Now we'd like to interview the Financial Officer.

Joan is standing in the doorway.

JOAN

Mr. Ross is ill. He went home.

Gloria looks disapprovingly at Joan, then smiles at the agents.

GLORIA

I spoke with him. It's not serious. I'm certain he'll be

available tomorrow. In the meanwhile, why don't you

follow Miss Smith? She'll provide you with the records

you need.

Joan and the agents leave.

GLORIA

You did a good job, Gerry. Perfect, in fact.

GERRY

I didn't start off too good, but I guess I did okay.

For somebody dumb, anyway.

GLORIA

You're not dumb at all. Listen, I'm sorry about this morning.

I didn't handle myself very well. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings.

GERRY

Feelings? Homeless men don't have any feelings. They can't

afford them. That's a joke.

GLORIA

Not a very funny one. Gerry, you're one of the wisest men

I've ever known. Look, last night I was confused and I guess

I wasn't myself.

GERRY

I guess you wasn't. The real you wouldn't have sex with a

dirty bum. No fun and profit in that.

GLORIA

You don't understand. The thing is... God, Gerry. I don't know

who the real me is, anymore. I just know I have to be alone to

think and try to figure things out.

GERRY

Are you still in love with that muthafucka?

GLORIA

You mean Bruce?

GERRY

Yeah! How many do you know?

GLORIA

Quite a few. I don't know if I'm in love with Bruce.

I don't know if I even believe in love.

GERRY

What did he do to you?

GLORIA

Nothing. It started long before I met Bruce.

GERRY

Okay. But you're still thinking about marrying him?

GLORIA

He's very powerful and influential. And I do have feelings

for him.

GERRY

I'd hate to see you marrying some bastard.

GLORIA

Gerry, every woman ends up marrying some bastard or other.

GERRY

There are lots of good men.

GLORIA

Like you, Gerry?

GERRY

I don't know. I guess I ain't rich enough or powerful enough.

I ain't got enough education and I sure don't speak good enough.

But--

GLORIA

Gerry, stop! Enough is enough!

GERRY (smiling bitterly)

Okay. So I'm just the fall guy.

GLORIA

I'm really very sorry.

GERRY

You should be. ‘Cause if you were my girl, I'd tell you about

Fred.

GLORIA

What do you mean?

Gerry shrugs and starts to leave. Gloria grabs his arm.

GLORIA

Don't walk out on me! What do you know?

They are very close. They look at each other for a moment, then Gerry kisses her. Gloria pushes him away and slaps him.

GERRY

Nothing! I don't know nothing! And you know what else?

I've had enough of Bruce and Fred and enough of you!

Especially enough of you!

Gerry storms out of the room and Gloria follows him into the hall.

GLORIA

Gerry! Wait!

Gerry stops and Gloria approaches him.

GLORIA

I'm sorry, it's just that you said ‘if you were my girl.'

That's what Bruce and Arnold...and every man I've

ever known has said to me. If I were their girl.

GERRY

Yeah. Whatever.

GLORIA

Please, with no strings attached. Just tell me what you know.

Gerry studies Gloria's face for a moment, then brushes her cheek with his finger.

GERRY

I'm a fuckin' idiot. Gloria, I saw your friend Fred talking

with some fat man. Fred's gonna frame you along with

Bruce and the fat guy's gonna give him a hundred grand.

GLORIA

Do you know who the fat man is?

GERRY

Some guy named Henze.

GLORIA

He's the campaign manager for Bruce's opponent.

Thanks, Gerry. You came to my rescue again.

Gloria kisses him on the cheek and leaves. He touches his cheek.

GERRY (to himself)

You fuckin' idiot. When are YOU gonna say ‘enough is enough...'

and mean it?

INT. FRED ROSS' HOUSE. LIVING ROOM - DAY

Fred is seated on the sofa and talking on the telephone. On the floor is an eight-year-old boy, listening to a personal CD player. He is writhing in time to the music. An attractive woman is polishing her nails in front of the television set.

FRED (to the phone)

I know that, Mr. Hickman...Bruce. We've been together

a long time.

BRUCE's PHONE VOICE

I'll take care of everything, Fred. You have nothing to

worry about.

FRED (whispering into the phone)

They're going to interview me tomorrow. I don't think

I'll convince them that Echevarria's our CEO.

INT. BRUCE's HOUSE. LIVING ROOM - DAY

BRUCE (to the phone)

If I end up in jail, you're coming with me. Do you understand?

FRED (voice phone)

Maybe I should make a deal with the Feds.

BRUCE (to the phone)

Fred, I'll give you one hundred thousand dollars!

Do me a favor, will you?

FRED (voice phone)

What?

BRUCE (to the phone)

Don't do anything. I'll bring the money to your house at midnight.

There is the sound of a door unlocking. Joan enters, comes over to Bruce and kisses him. He covers the phone with his hand.

BRUCE (whispering)

I told you to stay away. Gloria shouldn't find you here.

JOAN

Who cares? You're almost done with her anyway.

Joan kisses the top of Bruce's head and then begins to massage his neck and shoulders.

INT. FRED's HOUSE. LIVING ROOM - DAY (SAME FAMILY SCENE)

FRED (to the phone)

You still there?

BRUCE (voice phone)

Yes.

FRED (to the phone)

I don't think a little money is going to make a difference.

BRUCE (voice phone)

One hundred grand is a little money?

INT. BRUCE's HOUSE. LIVING ROOM - DAY

BRUCE (to Joan)

Careful...too much pressure.

FRED (voice phone)

Really? Well, how about this, then, for old times sake...

make it a million!

BRUCE (to the phone)

Ohhh...did you say a million?

(to Joan)

Sure, rub it hard...under my belt...

INT. FRED's HOUSE. LIVING ROOM - DAY

FRED (to the phone)

So you think I'm going below the belt with this?

I could be asking for two million, you know!

BRUCE's PHONE VOICE

No, no! One million's plenty!

FRED (to the phone)

Good! See you at midnight.

BRUCE's PHONE VOICE

No, Fred! Wait! I didn't mean--

Fred hangs up.

INT. BRUCE's HOUSE. LIVING ROOM - DAY

Bruce's shirt is off and Joan is all over him.

BRUCE (to the phone)

Fred? Shit!

(to Joan)

Get off! I'm in trouble.

JOAN

You make me wait any longer and I'll show you what real

trouble is.

Bruce smiles, then kisses Joan enthusiastically. They begin to make love, but are interrupted by the sound of the doorbell.

EXT. BRUCE'S HOUSE - DAY

Gloria is standing at the front door. She waits a few moments, but when Bruce doesn't answer, she knocks.

GLORIA

Hello, Bruce?

She puts her ear on the door and hears Bruce and a woman talking.

GLORIA

Bruce? It's me, Gloria.

BRUCE's VOICE (muffled)

Just a moment, Gloria! I'm coming!

Bruce opens the door. His hair is wet and he's wearing a bathrobe.

BRUCE

Sorry...I was just getting out of the shower.

GLORIA

Since when do you take a shower in the middle of the day?

Gloria pushes him out of the way and enters the house. She glances around the room.

GLORIA

Are you alone?

BRUCE

No. I'm with my secret lover.

She tosses her purse on the sofa and goes upstairs. Bruce is close behind her.

BRUCE

Gloria, dear...be reasonable. It was a joke. With everything

going on, do you really think I have time for a tryst?

GLORIA

Anybody else...no. You...u-huh.

INT. BRUCE's HOUSE. UPSTAIRS HALLWAY, BATH AND BEDROOM - DAY

Gloria peeks into the bathroom. It's empty. She enters Bruce's bedroom; the bed is made.

BRUCE

What are you doing? You think I've got another woman

stashed away? I told you I learned my lesson.

GLORIA

I'm not acting the jealous lover,Bruce. I have something

to tell you and I want to be sure nobody is listening.

Bruce sits down on the bed.

BRUCE

As you can see, we're quite alone. Come, sit down and tell

me what's so important.

Gloria sits down next to Bruce.

GLORIA

Fred knows about you and his wife and now he's paying

you back. He made a deal with John Henze.

BRUCE

I should have guessed...

Joan is hiding under the bed and is listening intently.

BRUCE

Greedy bastard. He says he's going to tell the Feds everything.

Unless I give him a million dollars. Damn!

Where did you learn all this?

GLORIA

Gerry. He overheard a conversation between Fred and Henze.

Bruce shakes is head.

BRUCE

I'm not sure I can get my hands on a million and even if I could,

how do I know Fred will keep his mouth shut?

GLORIA

You don't. Can you get the money from the Party?

Bruce shakes his head.

BRUCE

Not that much. Henze has a weakness for you, doesn't he?

GLORIA

I don't know. Why? You want me to get him in bed while

you stand over us with a video camera?

Bruce smiles weakly.

BRUCE

No. There are some things even I wouldn't ask you to do.

I thought maybe, if he liked you...never mind.

GLORIA

What, then?

BRUCE

Maybe your boyfriend, Echevarria.

GLORIA

Gerry? He's already taking the fall and going to prison.

BRUCE

But if thought his Lady Love were going with me...he'd do

anything to save you. Seems to be making a career of it.

Bruce goes to his desk and writes a check.

BRUCE

Here, give this to him.

Gloria looks at the check.

GLORIA

Twenty thousand? He's only expecting ten.

BRUCE

Ask him to stop Ross...for your sake.

GLORIA

Stop Ross...you mean kill him?

Bruce forces a laugh.

BRUCE

No, no, nothing like that. Just rough him up a little.

Frighten him enough to keep his mouth shut.

GLORIA

You're crazy! I'm not going to ask Gerry to do that!

He wouldn't do it, anyway. You're playing golf with

Senator Burton later, aren't you?

BRUCE

Yes. I'm going to ask for his help, but I'm not counting on

getting it.

Joan peeks out from under the bed, indicating that she's tired and wants to leave.

GLORIA

Maybe he'll come through. But if he doesn't...Bruce, you're not

going to do anything reckless, are you?

BRUCE

Only if you let me get away with it.

Bruce takes Gloria in his arms and kisses her. Behind her back, he motions to Joan to escape. Gloria tries to push Bruce away, but he holds her tight and continues to kiss her. As he does, Joan scrambles out of the room and down the stairs. Gloria gets free.

GLORIA

What was that? Did you hear something?

BRUCE

Only the beating of my heart. Kiss me!

GLORIA

Stop fooling around. I have to go, anyway. Good luck with

Burton.

EXT. GOLF COURSE - DAY

A white-haired man skillfully sinks a long putt. He smiles with satisfaction and walks toward a golf cart. It's SENATOR BURTON and Bruce is with him.

BRUCE

Great control, Senator!

The Senator climbs into the cart and Bruce joins him.

BURTON

Think so? You could use some control yourself, boy.

What kind of damn fool are you, anyway? Messing

around with the wife of a man who can crush your nuts

for pecan pie!

BRUCE

Are you going to help me or not?

BURTON

Let me get this straight in my mind. You got yourself caught

doing the dirty dance and you're asking me to pay the

piper. A million dollars! Is that about it?

The Senator and Bruce drive away.

BURTON's VOICE

Damn expensive dance lessons, if you ask me. Cheaper just to

get ourselves a new candidate.

EXT. GLORIA's HOUSE - NIGHT

Gloria's convertible, with Gloria and Gerry seated in front, pull up to her driveway. Gerry exits and Gloria opens the garage door with the remote. Mildred peers through a rose bush separating the two properties. When she sees Gerry come out of the car, she walks over to him, carrying three roses. Gloria is watching.

MILDRED

These are my last three roses...for you...thought you might

be interested in horticulture.

GERRY

Yeah! I am! All kinds of horny culture!

Gerry accepts the gift. Mildred holds his hand and strokes it. A very irritated Gloria continues to watch.

MILDRED

Gerry...such a friendly name. I like it. You can call me Millie.

GERRY

Millie's a friendly name, too.

Gloria revs the engine and with tires screeching, races into the garage. Gerry kisses the hand of a delighted Mildred. Gloria gets out of the car and slams the door.

GLORIA

Gerry! Get your ass in the house! Now!

MILDRED

She's jealous.

GERRY

Yeah? You think so?

MILDRED

I know so. She never uses those words.

Gerry watches Gloria storm into the house. He gives Mildred a peck on the cheek.

GERRY

Thanks, Millie!

INT. GLORIA's HOUSE. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Gloria is pouring a drink. Gerry enters.

GLORIA

Finally! Are you quite through, Señor Don Juan Casanova?

If Millie knew you're the one who slaughtered all her roses--

GERRY (holding up the roses)

Not all of them. See? She likes me.

Gerry spots a vase and puts the flowers in it. He smiles at Gloria, who is sulking with a drink in her hand.

GERRY

And I like her. I was thinking maybe I'd take her out for a night

on the town. Check into some horny culture.

She gulps down her drink and chokes on it. Gerry slaps her on the back.

GLORIA

You and Mildred? Don't make me laugh.

GERRY

Why not me and Millie? You think you're the only one around

Here who likes sex? We guys get urges too, you know!

GLORIA

Really? Well, I have good news for you! I'm moving out...

until this whole fuckin' affair is over!

GERRY

What fuckin' affair?

GLORIA

Forget it! The Feds shouldn't see you living with your lawyer,

anyway.

GERRY

What affair? The fall guy scheme? Me and Millie? Me and you?

Gloria slams the glass down and hurries out of the room. Gerry follows her upstairs.

INT. GLORIA's HOUSE. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Gloria's suitcase is on the bed and she's packing it.

GERRY

So I stay here until after the investigation. Then what?

GLORIA

That depends. You'll probably be in jail longer than we thought.

This should help.

Gloria pulls Bruce's check out of her purse. She presses it into his hand.

GERRY

Twenty thousand? I can't take this. The deal was for ten grand.

A gentleman keeps his promises.

He tears the check in two and gives half to Gloria. He takes her other hand, kisses it and bows deeply.

GERRY

Am I enough of a gentleman now?

Gloria nods; she is trying not to cry. The telephone rings.

GLORIA (to the phone)

Hello? Yes, Bruce...oh! What good news?

INT. HUMBOLD & HUMBOLD LAW OFFICES - NIGHT

Arnold is at his desk, talking on the phone. Bruce is seated nearby, talking on a portable phone.

BRUCE (to the phone)

We have a friend who's going to help us. Hold on.

Bruce motions to Arnold.

HUMBOLD (to the phone)

Arnold here, Gloria.

INT. GLORIA's HOUSE. BEDROOM - NIGHT

GLORIA (to the phone)

Oh, hello Arnold!

HUMBOLD (voice phone)

Bruce told me about the situation and I'm going to bail you

both out of trouble.

GLORIA (to the phone)

But--

HUMBOLD (voice phone)

Just wanted to tell you myself. Here's Bruce.

INT. HUMBOLD & HUMBOLD LAW OFFICES - NIGHT

BRUCE (to the phone)

Gloria? Isn't that marvelous?

GLORIA (phone voice)

I don't know. What does he want?

BRUCE (to the phone)

Not much, really. We stay together until after the election,

for starters.

GLORIA (phone voice)

What else?

BRUCE (to the phone)

Nothing we can't do. We'll talk about it later, at the dinner.

INT. GLORIA's HOUSE. BEDROOM - NIGHT

GLORIA (to the phone)

Okay. I'll be there.

She hangs up.

GERRY

So what's the good news?

GLORIA

Mr. Humbold's coming up with the money for Fred.

GERRY

In exchange for what?

GLORIA

I don't know yet.

Gloria finishes packing her suitcase.

GLORIA

I'll find out tonight. I'm meeting Bruce at an Organization

for Latin Pride dinner. I'm going.

Gloria starts to walk out of the room and pauses at the door.

GLORIA

We'll talk tomorrow, okay?

Gloria turns and leaves. Gerry is upset and punches the wall.

GERRY (quietly)

You listening, Washie? Wanted to turn me into a fuckin'

gentleman, like Hickman. But there ain't never been no

difference between us. Two fuckin' thieves, sleeping

with the fuckin' trash.

Gerry pauses and looks sadly at his reflection.

GERRY

‘Cept tonight the trash's gonna be sleeping with him.

And it's killin' you, you sorry fuck.

INT. HOTEL BALLROOM - NIGHT

A Mariachi band plays and a troupe of dancers in Mexican costume finish their routine. On a platform above them, Bruce and Gloria applaud.

BRUCE

Well done, ladies and gentlemen! Thank you!

Miss Gable and I admire the culture of our Mexican

neighbors. Let's give these fine performers a hand!

Everybody in the ballroom applauds.

EXT. UNION SQUARE - NIGHT

Gerry, drunk and crying, staggers along the streets, dropping fifty dollar bills on the bodies of sleeping people.

FILTHY CAN

Thank you, sir. What are we celebrating?

Gerry doesn't answer and continues to walk. Filthy Can shakes Madonna, who is sleeping nearby.

FILTHY CAN

Hey, Madonna. It's starting to rain. Money.

Madonna opens her eyes. She looks at Filthy Can, who points at the departing figure of Gerry. Gerry hails a cab and gets in. The cab drives away.

FILTHY CAN

If I didn't know better, I'd swear that was our friend Gerry.

MADONNA

Sure it is...and I'm the First Lady.

Madonna goes back to sleep.

INT. HOTEL BALLROOM - NIGHT

Bruce has just finished a speech and is receiving a standing ovation. A lovely young woman in Mexican dress invites Bruce to dance and he obliges. He lets her put a large sombrero on his head. Smiling, clapping his hands and shouting Olé, he dances with her. A handsome Hispanic man invites Gloria to dance and they join the others on the dance floor.

EXT. GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE - NIGHT

Crouched on the ground by the bridge, Gerry plays the blues on his trumpet. There are tears running down his cheeks.

INT. HOTEL BALLROOM - NIGHT

Bruce and Gloria are seated at the banquet table and Bruce peeks at his wristwatch. It's 11:55.

BRUCE

Gloria, I'm not feeling very well. Too many enchiladas, I think.

GLORIA

I'm tired anyway. Let's go home.

BRUCE

No. It's still early. We'd insult our hosts if we left now.

Be a darling and wait here. I'll be back soon.

Bruce points to the Men's Room. He kisses Gloria on the cheek and gets up.

INT. HOTEL STAIRWAY - NIGHT

Bruce rushes down the stairs and leaves the hotel.

EXT. HOTEL - NIGHT

Bruce gets on a motorcycle and speeds away.

EXT. RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD - NIGHT

Bruce is speeding through the neighborhood. He almost runs into a parked car. There's a Hispanic couple making love in the front seat. The man, JORGE GONZALES, sticks is head out of the window.

JORGE

¡Oiga idioto! ¡Tenga cuidado por donde va!

(SUBTITLE: LISTEN, IDIOT! WATCH

WHERE YOU'RE GOING!)

Bruce pays no attention. Jorge watches him stop in front of a house a few doors down. He starts to open the car door, but the woman grabs him and pulls him down. Jorge and MILAGROS SANTIAGO start to make love again.

EXT. FRED ROSS' HOUSE - NIGHT

Bruce knocks on the door. Fred, in pajamas, opens the door.

FRED (whispering)

Do you have the money?

BRUCE

Yes, but I need to talk to you.

FRED

Okay, give me a minute. Let me get my robe.

Fred closes the door and Bruce looks up and down the deserted street. Fred, now wearing a robe, opens the door. Bruce has disappeared.

FRED

Hickman?

Fred walks to the curb and looks around.

BRUCE (voice)

Here I am.

Bruce is in the shadows. Fred approaches him.

FRED

The money?

BRUCE

I have half of it. I'll give you the rest tomorrow, after you

talk with the FBI.

Fred laughs.

FRED

No you won't. Tomorrow you'll be in jail.

BRUCE

I have to be sure you're not going to screw us up.

FRED

You arrogant, cheating bastard! You're lucky I didn't kill

you when I found out about you and Ruth.

BRUCE

You're right, you're right! I was drunk and stupid.

But you're getting your revenge and tomorrow you'll be

a millionaire.

FRED

Go fuck yourself! Christ, I hate your guts! Tell you what...

forget the money...it'd be more fun just to kill you!

BRUCE

Kill me for what? A five-minute affair that didn't mean anything?

FRED

Bastard!

Fred tries to grab Bruce, but Bruce eludes him. Fred goes after him, but falls in the ensuing scramble. Bruce jumps on him and grabs his throat. They struggle, but Bruce gains control. He tightens his grip until Fred stops moving. Bruce becomes frantic when he realizes that Fred is dead. He flees on his motorcycle.

Jorge and Milagros have been making love in the car. The noise from the motorcycle startles them. Jorge cries out as Bruce speeds away.

INT. HOTEL BALLROOM - NIGHT

Bruce returns. As he makes his way to his table, he stops to shake hands with a few people. He is trying to appear normal, but is sweating and anxiously glances behind his back. Gloria is dancing, but when she sees Bruce at their table, she excuses herself and goes to him.

GLORIA

You look awful. Are you okay?

BRUCE

I don't think so. Let's go, before I have to make another visit

to the restroom.

INT/EXT. BRUCE's FERRARI - NIGHT

Bruce is driving recklessly.

GLORIA

Bruce! Watch out! You want me to drive?

Bruce shakes his head.

BRUCE

Sorry. I'm just anxious to get home.

EXT. GLORIA's HOUSE - DAWN

A police car pulls up to the curb and a DETECTIVE and an officer get out. They go to the door and ring the bell. Gerry, unshaven and looking like a man with a hangover, opens the door. Seeing it's the police, he flinches and puts his hands in front of his face.

GERRY

Don't beat me! I didn't do nothing!

DETECTIVE

Relax, sir. You think we go around beating people?

GERRY

You don't?

DETECTIVE

Are you Geraldo Echevarria?

GERRY

I guess...

DETECTIVE

The CEO of the Sausalito Resort?

Gerry nods.

DETECTIVE

May we come in, sir?

GERRY

Uh...sure. I guess so.

INT. GLORIA's HOUSE. LIVING ROOM - DAY

The men enter the house and look around. The room is littered with empty beer cans.

DETECTIVE

Looks like you had quite a party here last night.

GERRY

No, no party. Just helped myself to a few beers.

DETECTIVE

I'm sorry to inform you of some unpleasant news.

One of your employees, Fred Ross, was found dead

last night.

GERRY

Too bad.

DETECTIVE

He had an appointment this morning. Looks like somebody

didn't want him to keep it. So they killed him.

GERRY

Fred was killed?

DETECTIVE

Where were you last night, sir? Between say, eleven and two?

GERRY

I don't know. Walked around, then came home.

DETECTIVE

Were you alone the entire time?

GERRY

Yes.

DETECTIVE

You need to get yourself a lawyer, Mr. Echevarria.

Gerry shakes his head.

GERRY

I've already had a lawyer.

INT. BRUCE's HOUSE. BEDROOM - DAY

Gloria is asleep in Bruce's bed. Bruce is in the bathroom. The telephone rings and Gloria stirs.

BRUCE

Gloria? Can you get that, please?

Gloria answers the phone. She puts it to her ear but before she can say anything, the caller speaks.

GLORIA (to the phone)

No, this isn't ‘darling.' Who is this?

INT. SAUSALITO RESORT OFFICE - DAY

JOAN (to the phone)

A very close friend of Mr. Hickman's. And you?

INT. BRUCE's HOUSE. BEDROOM - DAY

GLORIA (to the phone)

The bed warmer.

Gloria puts her hand over the mouthpiece and calls to Bruce.

GLORIA

Bruce! It's your office fixture!

Bruce enters, wrapped in a towel. He's drying his hair with another towel.

BRUCE

Who?

GLORIA

That slut, Joan. You know, the one you fucking screw

on your desk.

BRUCE

Shh! She'll hear you! Really, Gloria...your language lately...

(taking the phone)

Hello? What? Fred killed? My God! When...where...?

Thanks for letting me know.

Bruce hangs up.

GLORIA

Did I hear right? Somebody killed Fred?

Bruce nods.

GLORIA

When?

BRUCE

Last night, when we were at the hotel. And do you know who

they arrested? Your foul-smelling friend.

GLORIA

Gerry? That's crazy.

BRUCE

Not so crazy. He's the CEO of a company the Feds are investigating...

Fred was the Financial Officer who knew all the grisly details...

there's the motive.

Bruce continues to dry his hair with the towel, which covers his eyes. Gloria jumps out of bed, grabs her clothes and hurries out of the room.

BRUCE

Gloria...

Bruce uncovers his head and sees the empty bed.

BRUCE

Gloria?

He hears the front door slam shut.

INT. POLICE STATION - DAY

A CLERK sits in front of a computer. On the monitor is a photo of Gerry, with long hair and a beard. The Detective stands behind the clerk.

CLERK

Everything matches. It's the same Geraldo Echevarria, sir.

Got a record of petty theft and loitering...and he spent some

time in prison.

DETECTIVE

I'd better see what he has to say for himself.

INT. POLICE INTERROGATION ROOM - DAY

Gerry is seated at the table. The Detective and another officer enter. The Detective is carrying a plastic bag.

GERRY

I didn't kill nobody.

The Detective shows him the envelope. In it are Gerry's chain and magnet.

DETECTIVE

Does this look familiar?

GERRY

Yeah! Looks like my chain.

DETECTIVE

It is your chain. Your fingerprints are on it.

GERRY

So?

DETECTIVE

So it was found around Fred Ross' neck.

Gerry is astonished.

GERRY (shaking his head)

No, that's impossible! I gave it to...

Gerry stares blankly ahead.

DETECTIVE

Who? Who did you give it to?

Gerry doesn't answer. He buries his head in his hands. He begins to sob softly.

DETECTIVE

Mr. Echevarria? Answer the question, please.

Who did you give it to?

Gerry doesn't say anything. Then he looks directly at the detective.

GERRY

Nobody. I gave it to nobody.

DETECTIVE

Did you kill Fred Ross with this chain?

Tears are in Gerry's eyes.

GERRY

It looks that way. Ross was planning to testify against

me, wasn't he?

DETECTIVE

I don't know. You tell me.

The detective waits but Gerry says nothing.

DETECTIVE

Did anybody help you?

GERRY

Yeah. My fairy godmother.

DETECTIVE (to his partner)

Take him back to his cell. And tell them to keep

an eye on this guy. I think he's looney.

INT. JUDGE's CHAMBERS - DAY

Gloria is meeting with the judge.

JUDGE

He doesn't want an attorney and he's already confessed.

GLORIA

Your Honor, you know he needs a good lawyer. Please,

put me on the case.

JUDGE

You want to represent him, even though he's confessed and

wants to plead guilty?

GLORIA

Yes.

JUDGE

Very well, counselor.

INT. JAIL CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY

Gerry and Gloria are facing each other at the conference table. He is staring blankly ahead.

GLORIA

Gerry, why did you say you murdered Fred?

I know you're not a killer.

GERRY

Oh no? I'd kill my father for his fuckin' shoes.

GLORIA

You're innocent.

GERRY

Maybe that's what I'm most guilty of.

GLORIA

What do you mean?

GERRY

Nothing.

GLORIA

Gerry, I'm your lawyer. Talk to me.

Gerry lowers his head and studies his hands. He says nothing.

GLORIA

Please, Gerry. Let me help you.

GERRY

You've helped me enough. Get out.

GLORIA

No.

GERRY

Look! You don't have to do this! Get your fuckin' ass

out of here!

GLORIA

It's your fuckin' ass I want to get out of here, stupid!

INT. ITALIAN RESTAURANT - NIGHT

Bruce and Joan are dining. Joan slips off her shoe and rubs her foot on Bruce's leg.

JOAN

She's been giving that pig a lot more than lessons and

playing you for a fool. Bitch should be in jail. Let me say I

heard them plotting against poor old Fred.

BRUCE

No. Stay out of it. I'll take care of Gloria, when I'm ready.

EXT. BRUCE's HOUSE - DAY

Bruce's Ferrari is parked in front. Gloria approaches it and seeing that it's locked, peers through the window.

BRUCE (off)

Lose something, my dear?

Startled, Gloria turns to face Bruce.

GLORIA

Huh? Oh...Bruce. Yes. I was looking for something I think

I left in the car.

BRUCE

Really? What?

GLORIA

My red silk scarf. Um, did you know that Gerry confessed?

BRUCE

Yes. I must admit it surprised me.

GLORIA

Yes. You'd expect a man like that to lie about killing somebody.

BRUCE

Quite right. But then it's often difficult to predict human behavior.

GLORIA

You can never really know what's going on inside a person, can you?

Tell me...will you be at the hearing tomorrow?

I'm defending Gerry and would like to see you there.

BRUCE

I'll be there.

GLORIA

Great! In the meantime, watch out for my scarf, okay?

BRUCE

Certainly.

Bruce kisses Gloria on the cheek. She gets into her car and drives away. Joan has been peeking out the window and opens the door. Bruce returns to the house.

JOAN

I don't trust her.

INT. COURTROOM - DAY

The courtroom is full. At the door, a deputy has stopped Madonna, Kaposi and Filthy Can.

MADONNA

Let a lady through, asshole!

KAPOSI

Yeah! We're citizens and we got rights like all Americans.

FILTHY CAN

Better than most. We ARE America!

Filthy Can belches loudly. The Deputy pinches his nostrils and lets them pass. Gerry is sitting at the defendant's table, staring ahead. Gloria is sitting next to him and the District Attorney is at his table. The judge is at the bench.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Your Honor, the People will show that there is enough evidence

To put the defendant, Geraldo Echevarria, on trial for murder.

Indeed, he has already confessed to the crime.

Gloria leaps to her feet.

GLORIA

I object, Your Honor!

JUDGE

Sit down, Ms. Gable. You know you can't object to an opening

statement.

GLORIA

But my client is innocent! I don't know why he confessed!

Bruce is sitting in the courtroom and fidgets uneasily. The judge pounds his gavel on the bench, but Gloria ignores him.

GLORIA (to Gerry)

Mr. Echevarria, you confessed that you went to the victim's

house and killed him. Tell the court Fred Ross' address, please.

Gerry doesn't respond. The judge continues to pound the bench.

JUDGE

Ms. Gable, you--

GLORIA

He doesn't even know where the victim lived, Your Honor!

Everybody looks at Gerry, who remains silent.

GLORIA

Mr. Echevarria, at least tell us why you're taking the blame

when you're innocent.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Judge! I object!

JUDGE

I don't blame you. That's quite enough, Counselor. Let's recess

until tomorrow at 10, when you will walk into my courtroom

composed and ready to conduct yourself professionally.

INT. COURTHOUSE - DAY

A very angry Bruce stops Gloria.

BRUCE

I can't believe you told the judge that Echevarria barely knew Ross!

Are you crazy?

GLORIA

Gerry didn't kill Fred. But I think he believes I set him up to take

the blame. He knows he gave me the chain they found on Ross.

BRUCE

He must have taken it back.

GLORIA

I don't think so...but I can't remember what I did with it.

BRUCE

What do you remember?

GLORIA

I had it the night we went down to the Wharf. At least I think so.

But I drank a lot that night and...I don't know.

BRUCE

Well, I don't remember seeing it.

GLORIA

Hopefully, it'll come back to me.

Gloria starts to walk toward the exit and Bruce accompanies her.

EXT. COURTHOUSE - DAY

Bruce and Gloria are walking away from the courthouse.

BRUCE

Why do you insist he's innocent? He could have gone to

Fred's when we were at the hotel, you know!

GLORIA

Gerry didn't do it! I just wish I knew who did.

BRUCE

Maybe Fred had a mistress with a jealous husband.

What does it matter, anyway? Gloria, with Echevarria's

conviction, our problems will be over.

GLORIA

Gerry's not a killer! Look, I don't want to argue with you.

I'll see you later.

Bruce watches Gloria walk away.

INT. COURTROOM - DAY

Same scene as yesterday. Gerry is playing with a pencil and ignoring the proceedings. Bruce, elegantly dressed, is seated near Madonna, Filthy Can and Kaposi.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

I call Miss Joan Fraser to the stand.

Bruce seems surprised. Gloria stands up as Joan approaches the witness box.

GLORIA

Objection, Your Honor! The defense has not been notified

about this witness.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

The witness presented herself only a few minutes ago, Your Honor.

I believe she has pertinent information to share.

JUDGE

Ms. Gable?

Gloria and Joan exchange sharp looks. Gloria shrugs.

GLORIA

Why not? Let's hear what she has to say.

Joan is sworn in.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Please state your name and profession.

JOAN

Joan Fraser. Special assistant to... I'm a secretary at the

Sausalito Resort.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Miss Fraser. Please tell the court what you told me.

JOAN

I came forward because I have a conscience and--

GLORIA

Objection!

JUDGE

State your objection, Counselor.

GLORIA

The witness doesn't have a conscience, Your Honor.

There is laughter in the courtroom.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Your Honor!

JUDGE

Objection denied. And tread carefully, Ms. Gable.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Please continue, Miss Fraser.

JOAN

The day before Mr. Ross was killed, I overheard the defendant

and Ms. Gable talking.

GLORIA

Objection.

JUDGE

I'll allow it. Continue, please.

JOAN

I heard Ms. Gable tell Mr. Echevarria, in a very confidential tone,

that if Fred didn't keep his mouth shut, they'd have to do it for him.

GLORIA

Your Honor--

JUDGE

Quiet, Counselor.

For the first time, Gerry looks up. Joan looks questioningly at the judge and he nods for her to continue.

JOAN

I heard the defendant tell her that he'd quiet Fred with an iron tie.

Gloria jumps to her feet.

GLORIA

Liar!

JOAN

Then they kissed. They're lovers, you know.

Gloria starts to move toward the witness box, but checks herself.

GLORIA

I object, Your Honor! She's perjuring herself!

Gerry is smiling. Bruce has seen enough and hurries out of the courtroom. People in the audience are murmuring to each other. The judge repeatedly pounds the gavel on the bench, trying to regain control of his courtroom.

INT. JOAN'S APARTMENT. LIVING ROOM - DAY

Bruce is confronting Joan. He is disheveled and his face is twisted with anger. He slaps her.

JOAN

I just wanted to help!

BRUCE

Help? You dimwit! For once in your life, you should have

kept your tongue in your mouth!

JOAN

Bruce, please! I did it for your career!

BRUCE

There is no career! Can't you understand?

Joan puts her arms out to Bruce. He pushes her away and she falls, hitting her face on the side of the coffee table.

EXT. HOTEL - NIGHT

Gloria is in her car and is holding a stopwatch. She drives away and another car follows her.

EXT. FRED ROSS' HOUSE - NIGHT

Gloria pulls up in front of the house. The other car parks a short distance away; its headlights go off. Gloria checks the stopwatch. It reads 4 minutes, 28 seconds. She gets out of the car and walks to the spot where Fred was killed. The other car slowly drives away.

JORGE (off)

Are you a relative?

Gloria turns. Jorge and Milagros, hand in hand, are in front of her.

GLORIA

No, but I knew him.

EXT. FRED ROSS' STREET. BLACK CAR - NIGHT

Bruce sullenly watches the trio. With gloved hands, he removes a spray bottle and handkerchief from the glove compartment. A cellular phone rings and he takes from his pocket.

BRUCE (whispering to the phone)

Hello?

INT. SENATOR BURTON'S OFFICE - NIGHT

The senator is on the phone. Seated on a chair near him, is Joan, with a large bruise on her cheek.

BURTON (to the phone)

I'm very disappointed in you, Boy. Danced yourself into one fine

bowl of shit, this time. Give me one reason why I shouldn't flush

you down the crapper right now.

EXT. FRED ROSS' STREET. BLACK CAR - NIGHT

BRUCE (to the phone)

Give me a little more time and everything will be alright.

INT. SENATOR BURTON'S OFFICE - NIGHT

BURTON (to the phone)

It will, will it? I'm a gambling man. You got twenty-four

hours to get yourself smelling sweeter than a bottle of French

perfumes. You hear me?

The Senator hangs up the phone.

BURTON

You hurting, little darling?

JOAN (touching cheek)

A little.

BURTON

Well, you come and sit here on me. I know how to make little

Girls forget all about their boo-boos.

Joan smiles and walks toward the Senator.

EXT. GLORIA's HOUSE - NIGHT

The house is unlit. Bruce's black car is parked a short distance away.

EXT. GLORIA's HOUSE./INT. BLACK CAR - NIGHT

Bruce puts on a ski mask and adjusts his gloves. He quietly gets out of the car and walks to the house. He unlocks the door and enters.

INT. GLORIA's HOUSE. LIVING ROOM AND HALLWAY - NIGHT

Bruce enters and goes upstairs. He opens the bedroom door and enters.

INT. GLORIA's HOUSE. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Somebody is in bed, sleeping under the blanket. Bruce tiptoes to the closet and removes Gloria's red scarf. He brings it to the bathroom and hangs it on the shower, checking that it's strong enough to support a hanged body. He returns to the bed and removes the bottle and handkerchief from his pocket.

BRUCE

Sleep well, my dear.

He pulls away the blanket, revealing the pillows that are simulating a sleeping body. Immediately, Gloria appears behind him and knocks him on the head with Gerry's trumpet. Bruce staggers and Gloria escapes, still holding the trumpet. A moment later, Bruce recovers, picks up the bottle and handkerchief and follows her.

INT. GLORIA's HOUSE. LIVING ROOM AND HALLWAY - NIGHT

Gloria runs out of the house.

GLORIA

Help! Mildred! Help me!

Bruce chases her.

EXT. GLORIA's HOUSE - NIGHT

Gloria runs toward Mildred's house, but stumbles and drops the trumpet. Bruce catches up and grabs her. He tries to soak the handkerchief with the solution.

The sound of a BB GUN is followed by Bruce's cry. He's been hit in the back. Mildred aims to fire again, but the gun is out of BB's. She stops to pull some out of her bathrobe. This gives Bruce the opportunity to limp back to his car and escape. Mildred returns to Gloria, who is stretched out on the lawn.

MILDRED

Gloria! Are you alright?

GLORIA

Yes, I think so.

MILDRED

Come into the house. We'd better call the police.

Mildred helps Gloria to her feet. Gloria looks around and finds the trumpet.

GLORIA (to the trumpet)

Thanks, Old Washington...and don't worry. Everything's going

to be fine now.

INT. JUDGE's CHAMBERS - DAY

Gloria, the District Attorney and the homicide detective are finishing a meeting with the judge. They are nodding and shaking hands. They all return to the courtroom.

INT. COURTROOM - DAY

The judge takes the bench, the District Attorney goes to his table and Gloria sits down next to Gerry at the defendant's table. Bruce is standing against the side wall, near the first row. The homicide detective takes a seat near him. Madonna, Kaposi and Filthy Can are seated a few rows back.

JUDGE

Ms. Gable, you have something to tell us?

Gloria stands up.

GLORIA

Yes, Your Honor. Two new witnesses have appeared...

Jorge Gonzalez and Milagros Santiago.

Jorge and Milagros have been sitting in the back of the courtroom and they stand up. Bruce looks at them and Gonzalez smiles at him. Bruce looks nervously around the room.

GLORIA

These two people can prove that the defendant was with them

when the crime was committed and based on their information,

the police have agreed to drop all charges against the defendant.

The judge raises his gavel and pounds the bench.

JUDGE

The case against Geraldo Echevarria is dismissed.

Madonna, Kaposi and Filthy Can applaud.

BRUCE

They're liars! They'd say anything to help their compadre!

The judge signals to the bailiff, who slowly makes his way toward Bruce.

JUDGE

Mr. Hickman, would you care to tell us how you know

they're lying?

Bruce doesn't answer. He looks around the courtroom for a way to escape, when his eyes meet Mildred's. She points her index finger at him and pretends to pull a trigger.

MILDRED

Hey, Judge! Ask him why he's standing!

Bruce cries out and tries to escape, but is stopped by the bailiff and a deputy.

JUDGE

Mr. Hickman, you have just implicated yourself in the murder

of Fred Ross. Officers, please detain Mr. Hickman.

This court is adjourned.

The officers hold on to Bruce, who lowers his head in defeat. As the crowd disperses, the District Attorney and homicide detective come to talk to Gloria. Gerry slips through the crowd and walks out of the courtroom. Gloria, deep in conversation, doesn't notice.

GLORIA

Thank you, gentlemen. My plan worked perfectly.

DETECTIVE

I just wish you had let us in on it before Hickman tried to kill you.

We'll need you at headquarters later for a statement.

GLORIA

I'll be there.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

That plus your neighbor's...shall we say...input...should help us put

Mr. Hickman away for a long time.

GLORIA

The FBI wants to talk to me about Bruce, too. I can't believe I was

seriously thinking about marrying him. Even when I fell in love with...

Gloria turns around, expecting to see Gerry.

GLORIA

Gerry?

(to the others)

Did you see Gerry?

DETECTIVE

No, sorry.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Me neither.

GLORIA

Excuse me, please! I have to find him right away!

Gloria hurries out of the courtroom.

EXT. UNION SQUARE - NIGHT

Gloria is in Union Square, stopping homeless people as they set up their shelters. She has some money and Gerry's trumpet.

GLORIA (to a tramp)

Excuse me, sir. Do you know Gerry Echevarria?

TRAMP

Fuck off, lady.

Gloria moves on and crouches to talk with Madonna, who is settling down to sleep.

GLORIA

Excuse me, ma'am. You're a friend of Gerry's, aren't you?

Could you please tell me where he is?

MADONNA

Don't know no Gerry. Know a Harry, though. And plenty of johns

and dicks--

GLORIA

Thank you, anyway.

Filthy Can and Kaposi are together and Gloria approaches them. Filthy Can is making a drink from the contents of several bottles.

GLORIA

Excuse me. I'm looking for Gerry Echevarria. Nobody here seems

to be able to tell me anything.

FILTHY CAN

Nobody's going to tell you nothing. While you're all dressed up

like that, miss. You want information, you'd better look like

somebody we can trust.

Gloria puts down Gerry's trumpet and rips off the sleeves of her jacket. Then she tears her skirt and sinks to her knees, sobbing.

GLORIA

I have to find him. He has no idea that he's enough for me.

Filthy Can puts his arm around her to console her and she leans against him. He offers her a cocktail.

FILTHY CAN

Enough? Enough what?

GLORIA

Never mind. It's just a joke we have.

FILTHY CAN

Here, lady. It'll do ya' good.

Gloria pauses, then accepts. She takes a sip.

GLORIA

But, this is delicious!

FILTHY CAN

Of course it's delicious! You think I'd drink something that

wasn't no good? Here, take this. It'll keep you warm tonight.

Filthy Can gives a large piece of cardboard to Gloria. She lays down near him and covers herself with the cardboard blanket.

EXT. UNION SQUARE - MOONLIT NIGHT

There is a full moon above Union Square. Crouched on the grass, Gloria is sharing a hot dog with Kaposi and Filthy Can. An elegant man in a business suit comes from behind and tosses a twenty dollar bill to Gloria. She looks up and sees that it's Gerry.

GLORIA

Gerry!

GERRY

Hi. I'm looking for Old Washington's trumpet.

Gloria reaches into the green plastic trash bag at her side. She pulls out the trumpet and hands it to him.

GLORIA

Here. Is that all you're looking for?

GERRY

Yeah! It's the only thing I can say is mine.

GLORIA

Where the fuck have you been the last few days?

GERRY

I needed some time alone...to think.

GLORIA

I did a lot of thinking too.

GERRY

Oh yeah? About what?

GLORIA

About the meaning of the word ‘enough.' And I learned some

important stuff.

GERRY

Really? What could the teacher learn?

GLORIA

Well, that elegant manners and clothes on a man? They're not enough.

Bruce had those. But he was the bum and you were the gentleman and...

GERRY

Yeah?

GLORIA

And...that all the time, when I thought I was saving you? I was the

one who needed to be saved.

GERRY

And now you think it's enough just to come and live here on the street?

GLORIA

I hoped you'd come back to Union Square.

GERRY

They told me you were here.

GLORIA

You knew? And you didn't come for me? Son of a bitch...

I could have been killed by some muthafucka out here!

GERRY

My friends were watching out for you. Anyway, you would have

bitten the muthafucka to death or something.

He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a knife and fork.

GERRY

Here, take these. A lady always eats with the proper utensils.

GLORIA

Look, dickhead, if you came back here just to give me a hard time...

GERRY

Do you really think you can live on the streets for the rest of your life?

Gloria starts to cry.

GLORIA

I want us to be together. Isn't that enough?

GERRY

What about your career?

GLORIA

Fuck my career.

GERRY

We really need to work on your language.

(smiling)

It's awful.

GLORIA

Stop teasing me. What more do you want from me?

Haven't I said enough?

GERRY

Nope.

GLORIA

I want to be with you, here, because...

GERRY

Because why?

GLORIA

Because I'm in love with you, you fucking bastard!

GERRY

At last. Now, enough is enough.

Gerry takes Gloria in his arms and they kiss.

The TRUMPET SOLO plays.

Gloria stops kissing Gerry and looks at him.

GERRY

Did you hear that?

The music stops.

GLORIA

Yeah!

The music resumes and the couple kiss again. As they do, their homeless friends erect a lover's hut out of pieces of cardboard. Against the moon, there's a silhouette of a man playing a trumpet. It could be Old Washington.
