L'Akagi impegnata nella Guerra per la conquista della Manciuria alla fine degli anni Trenta, notare i biplani che ancora fanno parte del suo parco aerei. La portaerei si presenta dopo i pesanti lavori di ammodernamento che anno tolto i tre ponti degradanti a favore di un unico lungo ponte. Sulla sinistra della nave (a destra della foto) si nota la piccola isola. L'Akagi fu una delle due uniche portaerei della storia ad avere l'isola dalla parte sinistra. Questo perchè si pensava inizialmente di utilizzarla in parallelo con la "gemella" Kaga.
