"The Artistic Director of the Theatre asked me to step out of the rehearsal room where we were staging the Italian Girl in Algiers, and follow him downstairs. We got to the stage left wings and he said, 'Can you do this?' I said: 'Yes.' 'Good', he said, ' because you'll probably have to finish the performance for her'. It was near the end of the second act, a Sunday matinee. I stayed in the wings and watched. She was obviously suffering, and I remember watching her sing the Card Scene aria, crawling on her hands and knees, as far downstage as she could, rather than taking it high up on the mountain, to save energy. A great artist and great professional, she made it, God bless her. I learned a lot that afternoon watching her work---under those trying conditions. Monday was a dark day, so I got a hold of a score, refreshed my memory, and sure enough, Tuesday morning at around 10, I got the call."

(Alice, commenting on her double European debut, taking over performances of Carmen for an ailing Elena Obratsova with Josè Carreras,
then her official debut as Isabella in L'Italiana in Algeri, with Ruggero Raimondi, ten days later.)

"Production week we got on the actual set, and the rake was considerably steeper than the one we rehearsal on, and now being outdoors, every night at exactly 10:30, the dew would hit the stage and sure enough, we'd start to slide down it. Now if this had been comedy, the effect would have been hilarious. It was so precise you could set your watch by it. We tried anti-skid stuff, the crew sprayed the rake, I tried bracing myself in various ways, but evening dew and gravity prevailed. Opening night off came the shoes. This is the only Carmen I ever met who lived her entire life barefoot: in the winter, in the mountains, even in the bull ring--now that's what I call moxy."

ok, OK, I'LL GO GET THE PIZZA, just stop screamin' 'cause the neighbors are listening OOOOh BABY, who cares about pizza....this is French opera, anyway

You talkin' to me?

how it all ends....(Josè Carreras and Alice Baker)
