the Sassi

texts and photos by Angelo Fontana, authorized tourist guide

The Sassi are the ancient quarters of the town of Matera. Their first name meaning “ stony quarters ” is quoted in a document dating back 1204. They are divided into two slopes: “ Sasso Caveoso ” and “ Sasso Barisano ”, characterised by the presence of thousands of tufaceous houses and hundreds of little roads. They were caved between the 13th century and the 14th one, and had been inhabited up to 1952 by about fifteen thousand people. Some restoration plans are taking place at the moment and will let old structures be used again for the best. Since 9th December 1993 the “Sassi” are inscribed on the World Heritage List on behalf of Unesco, a Patrimony belonging to all Mankind.
