In the IX ^th century iconoclastic phenomenon fostered the origin of 155 rock churches among ravines of Matera. Greek and Latin monks were able to shape the places of worship by escavating the rock in order to achieve an effect of sculpted architecture in the void. Eastern frescoes are on the walls, on the pillars or inside the blind arches.
