History of Unione Sportiva Carate Urio

The history of our club began in 1895 when the major of Carate Lario (village on the shores of Lake Como, 50 km far from Milan) member of "Reale Rowing Club Italiano" (associaton which later became "Federazione Italiana Canottaggio") founded "Società Operaia Sportiva Caratese" whose first president was the major ("Sir" Luigi Minoletti) himself.

Unione Sportiva became immediately an important part of country life because this club used to organize fixed-seat rowing competitions (which is different from Olympic rowing for the type of boat, larger and more stable, and because the boat doesn't have sliding seats but it has a seat of 30 cm on which you slide helped by textiles and foam rubber) and other events such a theatral shows, cycle races, track events.

In 1953 the first Italian Fixed Seat Rowing Championship was organized in Como (Lombardy). During this competition Unione Sportiva Carate won its first gold medal in Italian Championships in 2CS with Taroni Filippo, Vitta Pierino and Maggi Antonio coxswain.

In 1954 the name of the club became "Unione Sportiva Carate Urio" because of the unification of the two villages Carate Lario and Urio.

Since the 1950s until the 1970s our club has always been among the best clubs in Lombardy, but since the 1980s we have been among the best clubs in Italy. The symbol of the club became the "4 Senior" that won 11 Gold Medals in Italian Championships in 15 years (from 1984 to 1998).

In the middle of the 1990s our club, after the introduction of new categories and new boats in fixed-seat rowing, started to devote itself more to younger and female categories.

This fact made many boys and girls to join the club. Since 2000 our club has been one of the best in Italy. Every year our athletes obtain excellent results in every category and win a lot of Gold Medals in Italian Championships (in particolar way in female category) and our club is placed among the first five positions in National Ranking (the best position was the First Place in 2003).

In 1995 our club reached 100 years and it has been the first fixed-seat rowing club to cross this finishing line.
