LIUTERIA SIRLETO Tools

tools

Entering the Sirleto shop is like stepping back in time even as far as tools are concerned. Gouges, chisels and planes recall the time when each young Sirleto received them from their father and later brought them to Master lute-makers shops like Bellarosa's and Calace's. Yet even though these tools may seem to belong on a museum shelf, their worn handles speak of many fine string instruments they have helped each Sirleto make. In fact, contrary to modern day commercial practices, the Sirleto Brothers are rigorous about using traditional tools and equipment: from the initial phases when they start handcrafting by cutting, resizing and planning the wood to the final phase when they gently stroke the brush against the last layer of varnish on each string instrument.
