NAVAL BATTLE OF SIBUYAN SEA - THE END OF BATTLESHIP MUSASHI

(24 OTTOBRE 1944 - LA FINE DELLA MUSASHI)

GIUDIZIO FINALE DELLO SHINANO / FINAL SENTENCE OF SHINANO

FINAL SENTENCE OF THE SHINANO

The battleship Yamato, together twin wing Musashi, is, you/he/she has been and it will be the greater and mighty war ship ever created (it is still in the Guiness of the records 2005).

It represents the extreme limit of the development of the ship armored in greatness and in power of fire.

With his/her enormous tonnage of 73.000 height tons load, with his/her 9 guns from 460 mms., with his gigantic motors to turbine from 150.000 horses vapor represents the not ultra plus of the war development of the battleship.

Its power had to put her/it in degree to sink any ship and to withstand whatever attack aereo.

It entered on call as soon as after the attack of Pearl Harbor and he/she fought from flagship of the Marina Imperiale in all the more meaningful naval battles of the Second World war (from the naval battle of the Midway, passing for the naval battle of Saint Cruz, for the naval battle of the Mariannes, for the naval battle of Leyte, thin to reach his "song of the swan" with the naval battle of Okinawa.

A ship therefore that its Country represented (the Yamato is in fact the same spirit of Japan), he/she fought for it and it immolated him going to the martyrdom trying to save the Japanese troops barricaded in the desperate attempt to defend the island of Okinawa.

This is the positive and romantic side of the battleship Yamato, that that from 1945 to our days it fascinates the impassioned ones some history of the harbor and the naval battles.

If it is coldly analyzed however the battleship Yamato he discovers that it was everything anything else other than an invincible and perfect ship.

We for instance quote these verses drawn from "The gladiators of the sea" of A. Solmi:

"The plans for Midway were elaborated on board of the battle " ship superkolossal" Yamato, from 65.000 tons (73.000 to full load), armed with 9 guns from 460 mms.: the ship most powerful of the world together with the twin Musashi (what, however, in June 1942, you/he/she had not completed the preparation yet).

Here it needs to open a brief parenthesis on these super ones - colossuses that, in theory, you/they would have had to sweep everything in front of itself in their cammino.

They didn't sweep anything instead, rather they were them to be swept away with relative facility, not as soon as the fold of the events cambiò.

During the war they combined few or nothing and they were more than obstacle that other for the necessity to equip her with an enormous protection.

They didn't even serve to make dajleet in being, as the English say, or rather from fleet that he/she doesn't fight but hangs on the movements of the adversary in how much it prevents him from completing some actions or it induces him/it to undertake others of it not felici.

Huge monsters from the lazy brain, these heavy unities also revealed defects of construction and protection despite the corazzatura of 650 mms. in the towers, a corazzatura that arrived until under the hull and the motors to turbine from 150.000 C. V., that would have had to assure them a speed for other ever reached of 27 nodi. s

You build in the yards Mitsubishi of Nagasaki, it was - no unbalanced ships " ": any modern battleship also of young person tonnage was more rapids, more agile and, in conclusion, more powerful person of them, because better in degree to defend himself/herself/themselves from the attacks aerei.

In a word they were colossuses that frightened only on the paper."

These few lines demolish in brutal way the myth of the Yamato and they synthesize all of its defects of it:

excessive tonnage

slowness pachidermica

scarce mobility

primitive radar

low frequency of draught

To them it has to be assistant, in our opinion, also the mediocre precision of the gunners, which you/they didn't know how to use to fund the most powerful guns of the world.

I report me to the clash with the American aircraft carriers of escort, during the naval battle of the Gulf of Leyte.

In this breaker the group of Kurita succeeded in making little damages to the numerous American light aircraft carriers defended by valorissimi destroyer.

The Yamato shot yes for a long time, but with scarce precision and coordination, therefore "to the test of the fire" it resoundingly failed.

It is not heretical to affirm that if there had been the Bismarck to the place of the Yamato in the turn of an oretta you/they would be sunk about twenty American aircraft carrier of escort, preventing I disembark him/it American in Philippines and letting the Japanese winning the Battle of Leyte.

In this case the admiral Halsey would justly be ended to the court martial (as after all deserved)!

The Musashi didn't even succeed instead in shooting a hit against a hostile ship, limiting himself/herself/itself to defend himself/herself/themselves hopelessly against the attacks aerei.

It undoubtedly showed a defensive ability and resistance to the hits unbelievable, boxing well 19 bombs and 26 torpedos before sinking, but to the test of the facts it showed that also the most resistant and mighty battleship of the world nothing was able against the aerial attacks.

The Japanese had not evidently learned the lesson that themselves had given to the world sinking without excessive worries the battleship Prince of Wales and the battle cruiser Repulse pride of the Royal Navy but deprived of aerial coverage.

The class of battleships Yamato would perhaps be been able as self moving artillery to be used for preparing to the troops of invasion the unloadings of the islands to conquer, as they made the Americans with his/her own battleships.

Grandious but unlucky!
