Digital Platforms and Pervasive ICT
Research activities:
Network Design, Planning, Modelling, Simulation Analysis and Testing
Quality of Service (QoS) over IP (Int-Serv, Diff-Serv and integration between such architectures)
Voice over IP
Metro Ethernet
Networks and Multi-Protocol Label Switching
Traffic Engineering and Network Resilience.
He was strongly involved in the modelling of the proposal for the first European satellite network (EURO SkyWay) by OPNET simulation tool in order to determine the service and market capabilities of it.
He was involved in the IST european project BASS (Broadband Access Services Solution), more precisely in user and network requirements definition, system specification and validation/verification by means of simulation.
He modelled the ENEL's power-line network for simulations analysis and studies; this network supports intelligent tele-management and value-added services. OPNET Modeler was the deployed tool.
He was a consultant for WIND (TCO) in the IST European project MOICANE (Multiple Organisation Interconnections for Collaborative Advanced Network Experiments), regarding the analysis, design, configuration and testing of QoS-enabled IP networks, both for the access and core part.
He designed, planned and specified several local and metropolitan networks in different area of Italy, involving a wide variety of broadband wired or wire-less technologies (for either multimedia services support or monitoring purposes).
He specified the requirements of various innovative networks, also supporting Voice over IP (e.g. the new telecommunication infrastructure of Pirelli skyscraper in Milan).
He designed an architecture and the working operations to measure and monitor the provided QoS guarantees in an IP network.
He provided the design specification, testing and assessment guidelines for the new contribution network of the biggest Italian media operator (MEDIASET).
He was the technical project manager of the assessment process of the IST FP5 projects in the broadband domain. Providing the state-of-the-art up to 1998, up to now and the future key actors and developments, for the world-wide research in that technology area. The impact of EU research activities since 1998 was also identified and analyzed.
He participated to the IST european project PHOENIX (concerning the joint source-Channel Coding and Decoding in 4G networks), in order to devise effective solutions for transferring control/signalling information between the relevant entities of the system proposed into the framework of the project, and model, simulate, analyze the performance of the overall architecture. The point-to-point architecture for advanced video streaming of PHOENIX was extended in OPTIMIX project for a point-to-multipoint scenario, where the same set of task was performed.
He collaborated to several other EU funded projects, such as MULTINET and MEMBRANE, regarding novel network solutions in mobile environments. Concerning design, modeling and testing issues.
He was the technical manager of a relevant project about the identification, analysis and resolution of the issues related to the implementation of a national K-SFN for the TV channels distribution and broadcasting on the DVB-T (DTT) infrastructure of the most important Italian media operator (MEDIASET).
He is currently involved in OPTIMIX project of EU FP7, enhancing and extending results of PHOENIX project.
He has collaborated to the design and editing of several national and international project proposals.
He has made several lessons regarding his research activities in both master and training courses for private and public institutions (e.g. Politecnico di Milano, SIEMENS, HP, ALCATEL, WIND, Sirti, VODAFONE).
He has been the tutor of undergraduate (for their university thesis) and post-degree students (for their master thesis) in different research area of networking, related to his main skills.
He has been involved in the reviewing process of technical papers for several international conferences (also sponsored by IEEE). He is a reviewer of “Journal of education, informatics and cybernetics”, first launched in January of 2009.
He has good experience in technical coordination and management in general of research teams, also composed by several members.
In 2008, he was granted the senjor grade of IEE membership.
In July of 2009, he achieved the Project Management Professional (PMP) certificate from PMI (Project Management Institute)
In November 2009 he achieved the BEC higher C1 for business English from Cambridge ESOL
From July 1998 to December 1998
ALCATEL Italia, Vimercate (MI).
Researcher in telecommunication networks, mainly on QoS over IP and packet scheduling disciplines. Concerning design, modeling and testing.
