THE "PRECONI" |
The "Preconi" performed many tasks: write down the
decrees by order of the Podestà
and the judges, and those for the control of fire in case of windy weather ; they had to
attend the session of the Credenza
and perform some offices that were decided by the Council every time. The statutes stated however that it was not their task to bring the staircase up to the gallows, nor to lead the convict or bring the stump for the beheadings. The "Preconi" couldn't sleep outside the city unless they had to take part in a wedding ceremony; in that case they obtained a permission, for a maximum of six days. They were paid by the Council and, if they had a good bull or horse and a trumpet, they got a higher wage. |
