THE ARMY

Each citizen who was in possession of 60 imperial coins, at the age of 20 had to go and become a "guajtam" or a "scaraguajtam". The "guajtam" was a sentinel or a watchman, the "scaraguajtam" was a guard. During periods of peace the team of guards was composed of no more than 4 citizens for each "terziere" district.

Only the Podestà and the attorneys could request a higher number, if necessary.

If, during the night, someone damaged something and felons were not apprehended, the guards had to pay the damages.

The head guards were in command of the soldiers. Just after being appointed, their duty was to make a list of sentinels and guards to establish the shifts. The term of office of the guardians and their superiors lasted six months.
