THE MARKET PLACES

In Ivrea, as a proof of its flourishing trade, there were, in the market square, two weekly markets, on Tuesday and on Friday.

Everyone could take part both in the buying and in selling of goods. Bandits, thieves, traitors and those who were at war with Ivrea were excluded.

On Tuesday and on Friday, around a mile from Ivrea, it was not possible to trade, but it was compulsory to bring goods to the market, the punishment being confiscation.

If the market and holiday overlapped, the market didn’t take place. Not even the shops of the town could be open to sell during holidays, except for those which sold food; even the spicers had to keep their doors closed.
