MARCELLO MURTAS: A LIFE BETWEEN ENGINES AND POEMS
I met Marcello last July, at a coffee machine in the FGP HQs in Turin; even
having worked in the same place for years, we had
never talked to each other before.
That day, I don’t remember how and why, we started discussing about books and
suddenly he asked me: “You say you like reading, would you like to read the book
of poems that I just wrote?”
I confess that I spent the whole evening reading his beautiful poems.
Marcello was born in Sardinia in 1968 and wrote his first poem at the age of
eighteen; in 1988 he was forced to expatriate to
Germany, as he couldn’t find a job in Italy.
After a year in Germany, in 1989 he finally arrives to Turin and is hired in
Fiat Auto, in the Powertrain area of the Company.
Now he works in Manufacturing Engineer-ing, in the Engine Testing Group.
Meanwhile, Marcello always kept writingpoems; in 2002, he came in fifth at a
na-tional poetry contest; the poem you findhere
below obtained an honorable mentionin another international contest in 2003.
Some months ago he published his firstbook, “Il mio grande sogno” (“My
greatdream”).
When I asked Marcello why he writes po-ems, he simply answered me: “For me it is
away to express feelings and emotions
whichare difficult with normal words or speakingdirectly to the person; after
all, I am a shyguy!”.

I’D SELL
I’d sell my life
to you, my sweet love,
you, that I don’t want to lose,
as I caress your face with my fingers.
I’d sell my joy
to those who have no more tears
through having suffered injustice,
to those who gets bored easily.
I’d sell my honesty
to those who rob the poor
the little money they have,
to those who don’t feel wretched
even though they have surrendered its dignity.
I’d sell my confidence
to those who cannot go beyond what they can seen.
