LINUX

Abridgement

Linux is one of the most widespread operating system in the world. It was born in 1991 thanks to a young finnish student, Linus Tolvalds that, fond of programming, was dissatisfied about Minix operating system. So he decided to create a Unix kernel to enjoy himself and study his new computer work.
He adopts the GNU Project, a collaborative project not to use owner software ever, and the GPL Licence (General Public Licence), a free software licence.
There are several freeware, open source and commercial distributions (set of tools and software applications) on the market. The most important are: Debian, Fedora and Ubuntu.
Why should we choose Linux?
Talking about the frame, Linux'scheduling is based on the "Timesharing" idea. So a maximum timeslice is assigned to each project for its execution, and there is a sharp division between the kernel and the other parts of the system.
Installation is easy and it can be even made by Live-CD; free drivers are included in the distribution, often at kernel level.
It supports much more file system than windows, it's much safer because the source code can be accessed, it's free, fast and in servert applications it hasn't rivals, thanks to its matching with different clients.
