While
playing at the Rosemont with Ted Navare, I met a fine violin player.
His name was Al Dufy ... The audition was for Ernie Rapee; he was
the conductor. He said to me ... "Can you play jazz?" So, I played
"I Can't Give You Anything But Love," but not with one string, but
with two, three, four strings at a time. At that time, they never
heard anything like that on a guitar. "Can you read?" I said, "Yeah."
Tell you the truth, I couldn't read, but I had a lot of nerve. "Can
you read second violin parts?" "Oh, sure." I couldn't even read guitar
parts. ...
