Sestri Levante

1 - Cross from Riva to Moneglia

Updating: April 2001
Description:
We get to the oriental extremity of Riva, we cross the industrial zone and we reach the asphalt road to Moneglia. We turn to the left reaching the cemetery. (This road originates from the National one and we can arrive then until here in opposite sense).
In front of the bowling-green and beside the cemetery it climbs a narrow asphalt road (trail sign FIE: two red circles)(start, km 0).
We gain height with some winding; the road becomes a dirt one and continuous to climb. Then the inclination decreases and there is also some tract in light descent.
We reach so the heading of a small valley, on a panning ridge tall on the sea (km 2).
We continue on the road that turns its into path and it begins to climb becoming not cycle. The steep ascent finishes to a fork (km 2,7).
To the left the path continues not cycle; we go to the right, in light descent, reaching the tower of sighting on point Baffe.
From the alternative near the tower we turn to the left to overcoming a steep tract of slope.
Then the inclination it decreases and the bed does its best. The slope it continues in saddle up to reach a square with benches (km 4,5). Here we find three paths.
To the left the path that returns to Riva goes down (initially steep, then cycle, trail sign FIE: two red signs); forehead climbs the direct path to the mount Moneglia. To the right our path goes instead for Moneglia.
The layout doesn't introduce great gradients maintaining itself to half coast. It is necessary however to face some steep up-and-down to cross the brooks that they cut the slope; some tracts are narrow and they ask for some attention.
We meet the most greater difficulties in the first halves the layout, then the path widens and becomes easier.
We reach a zone pic-nic with small spring (km 6,8) and shortly we arrive behind the last ridge. Here the path clearly turns toward north and it goes down coasting along a first house.
It follows a tract in descent enough steep that finishes to a narrow pass where three paths are met (km 8,6).
We skip the trail signs and we still go down to the right a short steep tract that leads, in few meters, to the asphalt road.
The descent on asphalt is steep and leads to a hotel where we continue the descent on the main road reaching the sporting field, situated on the beach (km 9,5).
To reach the country there are two possibilities:
  1. Take the pedestrian road that goes to the left from the last winding and rise stairway to get over the promontory and to go down in country.
  2. Go at the end of the road. We introduce there in the center of the old railroad, now road. We have to get over the gallery (alternate unique sense with traffic-light).
This road, in the opposite direction, it brings to Riva to the beginning of our run, but I feel me to dissuade you for the presence of the narrow galleries.
Gradient: 400 m
On saddle: 90%
Observations: between the runs of the promontories it is the more cycle.
In opposite sense perhaps it is some less.

2 - Cross from Sestri Levante to Riva

Updating: 4/2001
description:
We reach the historical center entering 25 April street, forbidden to the cars.
You do attention to an alley that begins under to a turns, situated to the right for the one that climbs from the sea, that brings an arrow in ceramics with the indication "Punta Manara".
We ascent the alley, turning to the left immediately. The mule-track rises with numerous stairways and it is only little cycle. Gradually its inclination decreases and they increases the practicable tracts in saddle, in the meantime the panorama opens.
The run continues, with numerous non cycle tracts, up to the fork for point Manara. We go down to the right here to a building (bivouac, but closed; km 2,5) and from here in few meters we climb a staircase to reach the panning Punta.
Returned to the fork we face a tract in slope to begin then to come down to a fork (km 3,5). We still go to the left in descent as far as to go out on the lawns by now near to a house.
Still a tract of steep descent leads on a narrow road and to a house near a great spar. Here we meet the asphalt road.
The steep descent leads in the suburb of S.Bartolomeo (km 5,5) situated between Sestri and Riva.
Gradient:200 m
On saddle: not superior to 50%
Notes: The little cycle justifies this run only if it is inserted in some other itinerary.
In inverse sense has similar difficulty.

3 - Ascent from Lavagna to mount Capenardo

Updating: 1/2002
Description.
From the center of Lavagna we take the road that goes toward the highway. We reach the descriptive poster of S.Salvatore and we turn to the right to the traffic-light. We follow the indications for the abbey of the Fieschi.
In slope we pass near to the ancient monument and we continue in slope. The asphalted road rises without hard slopes and it meets in a greater road (km 6,5) where we turn to the right in direction Cogorno.
We continue to meet to the left a small road that rises (km 7,6; indications for mount S.Giacomo).
We turn and we go to slope, steep. The road leads to a Pass (km 9,9) near a small church.
We turn to the right and we take a narrow road that rises steep but asphalted. After 300 meters the asphalt finishes and we arrives to a crossroads (km 10,4).
Here we neglect the roads and we take the path (trail sign: strips white/red).
The run has non cycle tracts alternating slopes and descents. In this way we reach in peak mount Le Rocchette (km 12). A rather rough descent brings us to a pass (km 12,3) provided of abundant system of signs. In the near numerous ancient cave of slate.
We continue on the path that rises up to the ridge and then continues up to the peak of the Capenardo mountain (km 13,2).
Gradient: 800 m
On saddle: 98,5%

4 - Come down from mount Capenardo to Cavi

Updating: 1/2002
Description.
From the peak of the Capenardo we go down following the steep and corroded path (trail sign FIE: red triangle) that it goes down to a saddle. After the first 100 meters the path becomes easy.
Let's follow it avoiding the numerous smaller ramifications. The path widens to mule-track and it goes down to meet on a dirt road (km 0,9).
We turn to the right and we continue with scarce inclination until to arrive to a square (km 1,9). The road continues in slope (varying), but we turn to right taking a smaller road.
After some hundred meters the road finishes to a gate, but we can continue on a comfort and evident level path (the trail sign a blocked circle has become).
The inclination increases more and more, we get over a narrow pass, then we take the steep and spectacular descent decidedly. We arrive in this way to a intersection (km 4,6).
To the left we would go to Sestri. We turn to the right, in light slope and we quickly arrive to an asphalt road (km 4,9).
Entirely going down on the road we would arrive to a gate that is necessary to climb over for entering the normal road. In alternative 100 meters before the gate (around 300 ms from the beginning asphalt) we go to the left to a marked path that goes down with some stair and leads beyond the gate.
We go down for 200 meters and we leave the road going straight on to a winding (signals and poster of the historical street). We continue in light descent on the eighteenth-century layout and we reach the houses of Cavi where we enter on the Aurelia (km 6,5).
The station of Cavi is to 500 meters.
Gradient:  700 m
On saddle:   98,5%
Observations: one of the most beautiful descents that have happened me, binding but practicable always in saddle. The steep passages are tamed by the passage of the motocrosses.
Not practicable in slope. Splendid sight on Sestri.
Varying 4.1: to thesquare where the principal run turns to the right we continue straight on, in slope on the wide road. We get over a zone equipped for pic-nic and we begin the descent.
The road maintains its wide and goes down with some windings until it meets on the road that connects Villa Loto (to the left) with S.Bernardo (km 2,2). More effortless of the principal run.
Varying 4.2: (unadvisable) immediately after the zone equipped to pic-nic to the right a path goes down (trail sign FIE: red triangle). After a first easy tract we begin to go down a very steep tract, rough and invaded by the vegetation. The descent finishes to the cemetery. We turn to the left and we are to S.Bernardo.

5 - Cross from val Graveglia to Sestri Levante

Aggiornamento: 3/2002
Description.
We rise the Graveglia valley and, when we see the indications for Sambuceto, we turn right.
We leave the provincial road and we begin to climb (km 0). The road rises to returned, leads to the church of Sambuceto (km 2,3) and it continues.
After hundred meters the road becomes dirt. To the fork we turn to the right and we continue in slope. We get over a bar, then a chain.
When the slope becomes less steep we meet a narrow road that rises to the left (km 4,5) and we turn.
We rise for 200 meters and we reach the ridge. We see Villa Loto that we will reach.
We turn to the right and we take the road in slope that finishes after few meters.
Here we find a narrow path (to the left in comparison to our direction of arrival) that it goes down steep.
We follow this path that is almost entirely cycle and it goes down with diagonal course up to the superior houses of Villa Loto (km 6,6).
We cross the country going down the numerous staircases in direction of the church. Here we find the main road that we follow to the right.
The road crosses the slope of the mountain with light ascent as far as a ridge where we meet the variation 4.1 (km 8,2).
We continue in descent to a fraction, then we reach S. Bernardo and we continue the descent up to the doors of Sestri Levante (km 12,9).
At the traffic-light we turn to the right if we want to reach the center.
Gradient: ascent 420 ms; descent 500 ms.
On saddle: 99,5%
