1 - Climb Madonna della Guardia on the railway

With the 2000 jubilee are been asphalted few mule-tracks that they survived. The only really valid run to the Sanctuary this has remained.
Updating: 11/2002
Description.
The departure is in Val Polcevera at the traffic light among street Romairone and the Bridge Barberi.
We turn to the left here, we leave the last houses then we begin to climb on street Sanctuary. Shortly after the inclination assumes the characteristic constant slope because we are on the run of the railroad, by now tarmacked.
We continue without diverting untill arrive the houses of Gaiazza (km 4,5).
As soon as the road begins to go down we see to the left the old rails (cafe, shop of alimentary). Here we leave the road and rise to the left.
The mettalled run rises and we arrive to cross a road, we continue on the railway that continues on the other side (km 5).
We make an ample wind and we cross a road (street Sareto; km 5,6) that we follow to the right. We reach an intersection where we go straight on definitely leaving the tarmac (km 6).
The slope continues with constant and not excessive inclination, we rise with the only one prudence to choose the least uneven run or staying on the concrete guides . Attention to the passage on some non protected bridge or on the tall embankement.
We cross over the intersection with the track that arrives from Lencisa (km 7).
With long winds and also crossing two short galleries rise untill an intersection of paths above Lencisa (to the right the path goes down to Lencisa, from the left arrives from the sanctuary; km 10,5) where we continue straight on.
We reach the main road of the sanctuary to the height of the chapel of the Apparition (km 11). We turn to the left and rise to the church (km 11,3).
Gradient: 850 ms.
On saddle: 100%
Observations:
Varying 1.1: from Lencisa we can join us with this run. From the houses rise on the road that goes to the Sanctuary. At the end of the more steep tract we turn to the left in a dirt road. At the first fork we turn to the left. Initially the run has some up-and-downs then it goes down steep and it finishes crossing the railway (km 1,3). The peak is to the right to 4,2 kms.

2 - Descent from Guardia to Sestri

Updating: 8/2001
Description.
From the square we begin the descent. After about ten meters we turn to the right in a path that goes down cycle.
We reach the railway (km 0,4) and we cross it over.
We go down on the path that, with a steep tract, it conducts on the old road, now pedestrian trail.
We pass a restaurant and we arrive to a fork.
The path on the right would be gone to Lencisa, we go to the left instead to slope, we pass before to a house and we continue in descent.
Neglected the fork to the right to Lencisa we go down straight on to a farmhouse and we continue. A steep descent brings to the restaurant Fossa Luea (km 4) where five roads we cross (you see varying).
We take the level path that goes to the right slightly, beside of the tabernacle. We arrive to an intersection. Two possibilities:
  1. We go up to the right shortly leaning out ourself on a steep slant with bed in concrete. Let's go down it to cross a deriving path from left.
  2. We cross the road continuing on the other side on path in descent. We arrive to an intersection where we turn to the right decidedly. We continue until reach the end of the ramp in concrete of the preceding run.
We face a second steep ramp in descent followed by a slope on rough bed.
We continues in light descent, then a last ramp in concrete leads to meet (km 6) the asphalt road. We follow the road that goes to join that that brings to the sanctuary of Mount Gazzo (km 9).
We ascent to the left for hundred meters until to meet a dirt road that it goes down to the right (sheep, dogs). We go down on the road going to the right near the house and the narrow road is soon transformed in a paved mule-track that it conducts to a road (km 10).
We turn to the right; after few meters we have to go down a small staircase to the left (or to cross the yard of a construction after few meters). The mule-track continues in descent and finishes to the level-crossing. Crossed the level-crossing we follow the roads that go down to Sestri (km 12).
Gradient:  850 m.
On saddle:  100%
Observations: Amusing descent that it offers the possibility of variations more difficulties.
Varying:
  • From the restaurant of Fossa Luea, to the km 4, it is possible to go down to the right. We steeply go down on asphalt road to some houses where we continue on narrow road. When the narrow road turns to the left we continue straight on path that it comes down up to the church of S.Carlo of Cese.
  • From the restaurant of Fossa Luea, to the km 4, it is possible to continue straight on, on asphalt road, to reach the waste of Scarpino.
  • From the asphalt road, around to km 7.5, to the beginning of a descent, it is detached to the left a path in slope (trail sign FIE: double red square). We follow it, with some difficult tract, up to reach the asphalt road just before the shepherds.
  • If we follow the second possibility, before the ramps in concrete, it is possible to continue straight on. The path is widened and becomes road that goes down steep up to the quarries of Sestri.
  • If we reach the waste of Scarpino we meet to the left a destroyer. We cross the courtyard with caution (dogs and sharp iron pieces to earth) meeting a path that goes down. The first part is exposed and dangerous, but then it becomes practicable in saddle. We reach Murta and Bolzaneto.

6 - Climb Noci from Prato

Departure point:
Prato extreme Genoese outskirts in Val Bisagno.
Parking lot just before the center on the left shore, near the road to Bavari.
Updating: April 2000
Description:
From Prato we rise some kilometers the Val Bisagno.
You turns to the left on the bridge for Davagna and rise on tarmac.
By now in sight of the houses of Davagna (km 12,8) we fork for Capenardo and take continuing in slope. Almost reached the country we meet a wide metalled road to the right (km 15,3; hut).
We follow the track that rises along the slopes of mount Candelozzo and then reaches with a long diagonal the pass of the Fire (km 18,6).
You continue in descent on the same road up to reach the country almost deserted of Noci(km 22,2).
Gradient: in slope 870 ms, in descent 200 ms.
On saddle: 100%
Observations: to continue four possibilities they exist, anybody easy.
Two are described in Valle Scrivia . The others are:
  • From the pass of the Fire follow the AV toward east and go down to Scofferra (some exposed tracts, on saddle around 60%).
  • From the Pass of the Fire to follow the AV toward west to reach the Gorge of Sisa ( itinerary 11 )
  • Reach the deserted country of Feto and from there go down in the valley Scrivia.

7 - Ascent to fortress Diamond

Departure point:
Rivarolo, district of the Val Polcevera.
Updating: 11/2000
Description:
From the main road we turn on Vezzani street and we continue in direction of Begato. We cross the abnormal constructions of the popular outskirts over and we continue up to the terminal of the bus in the little square of the old suburb of Begato (km 5).
We continue in descent to overcome a bridge then rise and we reach the beginning of a wide paved mule-track.
We go down on the mule-track that it finishes to a bridge, that we overcome continuing on a narrow concrete road. We continue for a good tract until we divert to the left in a path (km 6.3).
This point is a little visible: it is found in slope, just before a house, in correspondence of a brook and it is marked by white arrows.
After a first uncertain tract the path becomes mule-track that rises with constant and not excessive inclination, but with rough tracts.
We arrive so to the walls of the fortress Begato, on a square in correspondence of a gate in the walls (km 8.8).
Without crossing the gate we continue in descent and then in steep slope. Overcome the Sperone fortress the road it flattens, it overcomes the Puin fortress and it reaches a pass.
We continue in slope, steep and rough, to a fork. Two possibilities:
  • we can climb to the left up to reach the couple of fortess call Two Brothers (one demolished and invisible). From there we steeply go down to the saddle of the Diamond.
  • we can go to the right reaching the saddle of the Diamond with easy level run .
From the saddle it raises a spectacular winding mule-track that laboriously climb to reach the fortress (km 12.8).
Gradient: 700 ms.
On saddle: 97%
Observations: this is only one of the different ways with which you can climb departing from the Valpolcevera.
Varying : if this itinerary is used in descent when we arrive to the bridge that precedes the mule-track that rises to the country of Begato we avoid to climb it .
Cross the bridge over we turn to the left. The narrow tarmacked road soon stops and we begin to go down on paths, stony mule-track, stairs.
This descent leads to the highway that we coast along rising to a crossover. Beyond we go down to a road that meets street Vezzani.

8 - Descent from Fortress Diamond to Rivarolo

Updating: 11/2000
Description:
From the peak we go down on the tight radius mule-track reaching the saddle.
We continue straight on the narrow road almost level that it begins to go down coasting along the fortress and their walls. Cross a steep descent partially concrete we rise to a square near the walls of the Begato fortress.
The walls are crossed by a door provided of iron gate (km 4). We don't cross but we begin to go down on the mule-track.
Reached the point in which the mule-track turns to the right clearly we go straight on (as far as here itinerary 7 contrarily), trail sign FIE: red circle.
We go down a staircase continuing on the mule-track that it goes down in the wood. A last steep tract ends on a narrow road where we turn to the left (houses).
Arrived to a little square we continue in the narrow road of right that crosses the country (Fregoso?). After hundred meters the trail sign goes down to the right, we follow it(km 5.5).
The mule-track it goes down and leads to the square of the church of the Madonna of the Garbo (km 7.3)
From here we can go down to the right on tarmac up to street Vezzani. It is instead better to go down to the left on a narrow road that leads to some houses to continue then as mule-track.
We cross the highway and we continue the descent that finishes on the street Vezzani (km 9.5).
Gradient: 650 ms.
On saddle: 99%
Observations: In contrary sense it is too much steep and it forces to long tracts to push.
Varying 8.1 : From the peak we can go down on the opposite slope. To the purpose we coast along the walls on the right (or we cross the fortress). We find one deadly descent that leads in around 1.5 kms to the pass of Trensasco (restaurant, tarmac).
Varying 8.2 : reached the pass at the end of the descent of the zigzag mule-track we can turn to the left on a path that cuts the slopes of the mountain. At the end we join us with the trace of the preceding variation and we continue to the right up to the pass of Trensasco.
