Aiona e Penna

The group Monte Aiona (1702 ms) - Monte Penna (1735 ms) is situated above Chiavari. For a long time training of winter mountaineering and nordic skiing it is gifted of numerous forest roads that allows the MTB to cross it in every way. In the inside it exists an integral reserve that it will have to be carefully respected.

1 - Ascent from Prato Sopralacroce to Mount Aiona

Updating: 1999
Trail description.
We get over the country shortly going down to a bridge. On the left it is detached a road that we take quickly gaining height. We get over some barns and the road it becomes a dirt one. We continue, neglecting some deviations, to arrive to an evident fork with signalings (km 8).
We climbe to the right in direction of the shelter that we reache (km 11). Just before the shelter it climbs to the left a wide path. We take it climbing, with some rough stretch, to the Pass of the Spingarda (km 11,7).
The mount Aiona is to the left. We climbe by foot the steep slant to the highland under the peak. Straight we climbe to the ridge that unites the two peaks.
Gradient:  1150 m
On saddle:   99%
Observations:   Attention to the cars. The slope up to the shelter is long but regular, then some difficulties. The Passo della Spingarda allows the descent on the opposite slope or the crossing to Mount Penna.

2 - Ascent from  Magnasco to Mount Aiona

Updating:  6/2000
Trail description.
We continue on the provincial road over the country to an evident crossroad with a road that climbs to the right (indications for Lake of the Lame). We rise on this road to arrive on the banks of the Lake (hotel; km 3 from Magnasco).
We continue to the right in the forest on an ample forest road (indications for the Cappelletta, going straight would be made a steep and very rough shortcut).
The road climbs with ample windings up to the Lakes of the Agoraie (km 7,5); integral reserve in the enclosure to the left.
We continue to the right in descent up to the Lake Lagastro (km 8.7) where we climb to arrive to a pass and go down then shortly to the Chapel of the Lame (shelter, km 10).
The road continues (after the bar be attention to the cars) with some slopes and descents and it crosses the road that climbs from Giacopiane (km 13.5); another slope and we go down to cross the road that climbs from Prato (km 16,5). We climbed to the left here and the shelter Pratomollo is reached (km 19; open during summer).
Just before the shelter it climbs to the left a wide path. We take it climbing, with some rough stretch, to the Pass of the Spingarda (km 20).
The Aiona Mountain is situated to the left.
We climbe by foot the steep slant to the highland under the peak. Straight we climbe to the ridge that unites the two peaks
Gradient:   900 ms
On saddle:   100%

3 - Descent from mount Aiona to Amborzasco

Updating:  6/2000
Trail description.
From the peak of the Aiona we go down to the Passo della Spingarda.
From here (km 0) to the left on a dirt road rather ruined that it goes down steep to cross another road (km 2, trail sign FIE: yellow rhomb).
We avoid to climb to the left (itinerary 7).
We go down to the right instead and after some meter we arrive on an ample forest road.
At right we would be gone to the Penna. We go to the left instead, go up again for some meter and we begin to go down on a steep road. The ground is good only for some tracts, while often it is exacavate by the erosion and strongly rough. The road ends in the lawns near the country where it returns a good mule-track with paved ground and it finishes in the country (km 6,5).
Gradient: 850 ms
On saddle:   80%
Observations:   I had crossed it some years ago and it was under better conditions.

Trail description.
The road continues, initially asphalted, climbing with constant inclination to cross the slopes of mount Bregaceto.

Following climb forces us to proceed to push to cross a road where we go to the right; we still rise arriving on a good dirt road (km 8.8).
To the right would be gone down to Perlezzi; we rise to the left instead. The slope continues enough steep to cross the road that originates from the lake of the Lame (km 12, itinerary 2). We continue to the right in common with the itinerary 2.
We still get over a tract in slope and then we go down to cross the road that climbs from Prato (km 15). We rise to the left here and we reach the shelter Pratomollo (km 17.8).

6 - Turn of the mount Penna

Updating: 6/2002
Description.
Near the forest house of the mount Penna it is situated an intersection with a wide forest road; we are 16 kms from Magnasco. Near parking lot.
We continue on the asphalt road that it originates from Amborzasco, we go down shortly then rise to the Pass of the Nail (km 1,5; border with the region Emilia-Romagna).
We go down on the parmesan slope. When we reach to the left a winding (km 4,7) we leave the asphalt road and we turn to the right in a dirt road. We continue with level course reaching a fork (km 5,4) where we go to the right, in slope, reaching a pass where a hut is situated (km 5,8).
The road continues in descent and reaches a winding (km 6,9). From left arrives a road (trail sign CAI Parma 863) that rises from S.Maria of the Taro, we continue to the right in descent.
The descent continues for around two kilometers then we begin to climb and we get over the spring of river Taro.
The inclination decreases and we quickly reach the Pass dell'Incisa where we reenter in Liguria (km 11,8).
Crossed the square we continue in descent on the wide dirt road. We avoid the deviations and we reach the point of departure (km 13)
Gradient: in slope 250 ms.
On saddle: 100%
Observations: beautiful walk among the forests that surround the Penna. These forest roads are, absurdly, open to the cars.

7 - Descent from the Pass dell'Incisa to Magnasco

Updating: 6/2002
Description.
From the Pass dell'Incisa we go down on the ample dirt road, on the Liguria slope.
After 400 meters we notice to the left a dirt road, closed by a bar. We take it. With a tract in descent we bring us under the steep walls of the mount Cantamoro and then we continue with some up-and-down. We get over a bridge (km 3,4) with beautiful vision on the precipice below and we start to climb.
Without problems we reach the intersection (km 4) with the itinerary 3 that it originates from the pass of the Spingarda and it goes down to the right to Amborzasco.
We continue the slope, with greater difficulties because of the ground sometime ruined, and we arrive at the end of the road (km 5,2).
We turn to the left taking a path initially not cycle. We rise in the wood then the path becomes almost level. We reach the savage valley that characterizes the northwest slope of Aiona. We cross it overcoming some slipped tracts and we enter the wood.
The path always continues maintaining the height and with descents and slopes to get over numerous little valleys. The path is without trail sign, but almost always visible, cancelled only in some crossing of the brooks. In case of uncertainty continued avoiding both to climb too much both, above all, to go down.
We arrive to cross the path FIE that rises to the Pass Pre de Lame (km 7) and we go down to the right for 50 meters. We find a bench and some descriptive poster.
We could continue in descent on the path FIE that goes to the Lake delle Lame; we turn to the left instead following the indication Agoraie written on a tree. In this way we cross contrarily the path P.N.X of the park.
We always get over some intersection keeping in mind the necessity of not losing height. With a last slope we reach the intersection with the path AV (km 7,8).
By now without difficulty we turn to the right and we go down to a road (km 8) where a roof is situated. We continue in descent arriving to cross the road that rises towards the chapel of the Lame (km 8,8 itinerary 2 ).
We turn to the right. On the comfortable gravel road we continue the descent going out on the square of the Lake of the Lame (km 12,7).
From here we can go down following the asphalt road or to follow the mule-track that cuts the windings.
We go down some hundred meters on the asphalt road and we turn to the left taking the mule-track that it goes down cutting the windings (trail sign FIE: equal yellow).
We meet the road and we continue from the opposite part. This second tract of mule-track it is decidedly more difficulty. Gone out on the road we continue on the asphalt reaching the provincial road and Magnasco (km 15,1).
Gradient: in descent 730 ms.
On saddle: 98%
Observations: some problems of orientation.

Others trails

  • From the chapel of the Lame (that is situated along the itinerary 2) it is possible to directly go down to the Lake of Giacopiane.
Go down on the path that passes in front of the Chapel, initially with not much inclination. The descent is made steep and conducts later to a saddle where go up again.
A descent for lawns finally finishes on the road on the banks of the lake (km 3).
  • From the peak of the Aiona it is possible to go down to west on the path FIE red rhomb, at first for lawns and then steeply in the wood, up to reach a dirt road. To the left for Prato Sopralacroce, to the right for Magnasco.
  • From the pass of the Spingarda it can be gone to the passo of the Incisa, to the feet of the Penna, following the Alta Via (trail sign AV or two blue little balls). From the passo of the Spingarda go down to the right in the wood climbing then for a little cycle paths. A lawn is crossed doing attention to the path that enters to the left the wood.
