Quel che segue è il testo integrale della "Dichiarazione d'Indipendenza" delle colonie americane dalla Corona inglese. La traduzione del testo originale è opera mia e spero di non aver tradito neanche minimamente il senso autentico di uno dei documenti più importanti della Storia.
Il documento è un colosso etico inneggiante ai diritti inalienabili dell'uomo, uguaglianza, vita, libertà e ricerca della felicità, secondo il canone che sarà della Rivoluzione francese.
E' un vero peccato che una Dichiarazione così bella e solenne, che riconosce il diritto dei Popoli di liberarsi dei tiranni, che sostiene l'eguaglianza degli uomini davanti a "Dio", sia stata seguita dall'esecuzione dello sterminio dei nativi americani, qui definiti in pratica "selvaggi spietati senza onore", dalla riduzione degli Africani in una schiavitù bestiale e vergognosa e dall'attuazione delle stesse azioni che i coloniali d'allora rimproveravano al Re d'Inghilterra.
Dopo la lettura del testo, infatti, ci si sarebbe aspettati almeno di veder riconosciuti agli altri i diritti che si pretendeva di vantare per sé stessi.
E' difficile abituarsi a veder seppelliti questi capolavori ideali sotto mucchi di egocentrismo nazional-razzista, ma sono cose accadute, che accadono e che accadranno di nuovo.
La "purificazione di Caino" sembra infatti un processo evolutivo molto lungo.

 

 

That which follows is the complete text of "The Declaration of Independence" of the american colonies from the English Crown. The translation of the original text is my work and I hope I did not betray the true meaning of one among the most important documents in history, not even slightly.
This document is a ethical colossus, hymning to the unalienable rights of Men, equality, life, freedom, search of happiness, according to a canon which will belong to the French Revolution.
True pity that such a beautiful and solemn declaration, acknowledging the people's right to free themselves from tyrants and that men are equal before "God", has been accompanied and followed by the extermination of american natives, hereby practically defined "merciless savages without honor", by the coercion of african peoples in bestial and shameful slavery and by the same kind of actions the colonists rebuked to the King of England.
After a thorough reading one would expect at least that they accepted other's rights as well as claiming respect for their own.
It's hard to get used to see these idealistic masterpieces buried under lots of self-centered nazi-racism, but these things have happened, happen and will happen.
"Cain's Purification" seems in fact a very long evolutionary process.

The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America.

Dichiarazione unanime dei 13 Stati Uniti d’America

 

 

When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

Quando, nel corso delle vicende umane, diventa necessario per un Popolo sciogliere i legami politici che lo hanno vincolato ad un altro ed assumere il rango eguale e separato al quale le leggi di Natura e la natura di Dio gli danno diritto tra le potenze della Terra, il rispetto del giudizio del genere umano richiede che esso dichiari le ragioni che lo spingono alla separazione.

 

We hold these truths to be self-evident,

Noi consideriamo le seguenti Verità evidenti di per sé:

 

-         that all men are created equal,

-         che tutti gli uomini sono creati eguali,

 

-                     that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights,

-                     che essi sono stati dotati di alcuni diritti inalienabili dal loro Creatore,

 

-                     that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,

-                     che tra questi diritti ci sono la vita, la libertà e il perseguimento della felicità,

 

-         that to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,

-         che per assicurare questi diritti sono istituite tra gli uomini delle forme di governo che traggono il loro giusto potere dal consenso di coloro che sono governati,

 

-         that whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.

-         Che ogniqualvolta una forma di governo diventa distruttiva di queste finalità è diritto del Popolo modificarla o abolirla ed istituire un nuovo governo, posando le sue fondamenta su tali principi ed organizzandone il potere nella forma che pare la migliore per realizzare la propria sicurezza e felicità.

 

-         Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.

-         La prudenza, in verità, detta che governi in vigore da molto tempo non siano cambiati per motivi futili e passeggeri; e conformemente l’esperienza ha mostrato che il genere umano è più disposto a soffrire, finché i mali siano sopportabili, piuttosto che raddrizzarsi abolendo le forme alle quali si è abituato; ma quando una lunga serie di abusi e di usurpazioni, mirate invariabilmente allo stesso scopo mostra il progetto di ridurlo sotto un dispotismo assoluto, è suo diritto, è suo dovere rovesciare tale governo e procurare nuove salvaguardie per la sua futura sicurezza.

 

-         Such has been the patient sufferance of these colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former systems of government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states. To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world.

-         Tale è stata la paziente sofferenza di queste colonie e tale è ora la necessità che le costringe ad alterare le precedenti forme di governo. La storia dell’attuale Re d’Inghilterra è una storia di offese ed usurpazioni ripetute, aventi tutte l’obiettivo diretto di stabilire una tirannia assoluta su questi Stati. Per provare questo, siano i fatti sottoposti all’onestà del mondo.

 

-         He has refused his assent to laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

-         Egli ha rifiutato il suo consenso alle leggi più sane e necessarie per il bene pubblico.

 

-         He has forbidden his governors to pass laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

-         Egli ha proibito ai suoi governatori di approvare leggi d’importanza immediata ed urgente, a meno di sospenderne l’operatività fino all’ottenimento del suo consenso e, dopo averle sospese, Egli le ha totalmente trascurate.

 

-         He has refused to pass other laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of representation in the legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

-         Egli ha rifiutato di approvare altre leggi per la sistemazione di vasti distretti popolari, a meno che quella popolazione non rinunciasse al diritto di rappresentanza nella legislatura, un diritto inestimabile per essa e terribile solo per dei tiranni.

 

-         He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measure.

-         Egli ha riunito corpi legislativi in luoghi inusuali, scomodi e distanti dai depositi dei loro pubblici registri per il solo scopo di costringerli all’obbedienza ai suoi provvedimenti.

 

-         He has dissolved representative houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

-         Egli ha sciolto ripetutamente le Camere dei Rappresentanti perché questi s’erano fermamente opposti alle sue prevaricazioni dei diritti del Popolo.

 

-         He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the legislative powers, incapable of annihilation, have returned to the people at large for their exercise; the state remaining in the meantime exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

-         Dopo tali scioglimenti Egli ha rifiutato a lungo di far sì che altri fossero eletti, per cui i poteri legislativi, impossibili da annullare, sono tornati al Popolo perché li esercitasse, restando intanto lo Stato esposto a tutti i pericoli d’invasioni da fuori e di disordini all’interno.

 

-         He has endeavored to prevent the population of these states, for that purpose obstructing the laws for naturalization of foreigners, refusing to pass others to encourage their migration hither, and raising the conditions of new appropriations of lands.

-         Egli si è sforzato di prevenire il popolamento di questi Stati, ostacolando allo scopo le leggi per la naturalizzazione degli stranieri, rifiutando di promuovere altri ad incoraggiare migrazioni e creando le condizioni per nuove appropriazioni di terre.

 

-         He has obstructed the administration of justice, by refusing his assent to laws for establishing judiciary powers.

-         Egli ha ostacolato l’amministrazione della Giustizia, rifiutando il consenso a leggi per la creazione di poteri giudiziari.

 

-         He has made judges dependent on his will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

-         Egli ha reso I Giudici dipendenti esclusivamente dalla sua volontà nella tenuta dei loro uffici e l’ammontare dei loro salari e il relativo pagamento;

 

-         He has erected a multitude of new offices, and sent hither swarms of officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance.

-         Egli ha eretto una moltitudine di nuovi uffici e mandato sciami di ufficiali per vessare la nostra gente e divorare i loro beni.

 

-         He has kept among us, in times of peace, standing armies without the consent of our legislature.

-         Egli ha mantenuto tra noi, in tempo di pace, forze armate senza il consenso della nostra legislazione.

 

-         He has affected to render the military independent of and superior to civil power.

-         Egli ha influito per rendere l’esercito indipendente dai poteri civili e ad essi superiore.

 

-         He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution and unacknowledged by our laws, giving his assent to their acts of pretended legislation.

-         Egli s’è unito con altri per assoggettarci ad una giurisdizione estranea alla nostra costituzione e non riconosciuta dale nostra leggi, dando il suo consenso alle presunte azioni legislative di quelli.

 

-         For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us, for protecting them, by mock trial, from punishment for any murders which they should commit on the inhabitants of these states, for cutting off our trade with all parts of the world, for imposing taxes on us without our consent, for depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of trial by jury, for transporting us beyond seas to be tried for pretended offenses, for abolishing the free system of English laws in a neighboring province, establishing therein an arbitrary government, and enlarging its boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule in these colonies, for taking away our charters, abolishing our most valuable laws, and altering fundamentally the forms of our governments, for suspending our own legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever, He has abdicated government here, by declaring us out of his protection and waging war against us.

-         Per aver dislocato in mezzo a noi corpi armati di grandi proporzioni, per averli protetti con finti processi dalla punizione dei loro delitti contro gli abitanti di questi Stati, per aver stroncato i nostri commerci con ogni parte del mondo, per aver imposto tasse senza il nostro consenso, per averci privato in molti casi del beneficio di un processo con giuria, per averci tradotto oltremare per esser processati per presunti reati, per aver abolito il libero sistema di leggi inglesi in una provincia confinante, istituendovi un governo arbitrario ed espandendone i confini per farne immediato esempio e strumento appropriato per introdurre le stesse regole assolute in queste colonie, per averci sottratto le nostre carte, abolendo le nostre leggi più valide ed alterando sostanzialmente le forme dei nostri governi, per sospendere le nostre legislature e investire quelle del potere di legiferare per noi in ogni caso e per sempre, Egli ha abdicato al suo governo qui, dichiarandoci fuori della sua protezione e muovendo guerra contro di noi.

 

-         He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burned our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

-         Egli ha saccheggiato i nostri mari, razziato le nostre coste,bruciato le nostre città e distrutto le vite della nostra gente.

 

-         He is at this time transporting large armies of foreign mercenaries to complete the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of cruelty and perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages and totally unworthy of the head of a civilized nation.

-         Egli sta in questo momento trasportando grandi eserciti di mercenari stranieri per completare il suo lavoro di morte, desolazione e tirannia, già cominciato in circostanze di una crudeltà e perfidia che difficilmente trovano paralleli nelle età più barbare e del tutto indegno del capo di una nazione civile.

 

-         He has constrained our fellow citizens taken captive on the high seas to bear arms against their country, to become the executioners of their friends and brethren, or to fall themselves by their hands.

-         Egli ha costretto i nostri concittadini presi prigionieri in alto mare a prendere le armi contro il loro paese, a diventare i boia dei loro fratelli ed amici, oppure cadere essi stessi per mano loro.

 

-         He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us and has endeavored to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian savages, whose known rule of warfare is undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

-         Egli ha stimolato insurrezioni interne tra di noi e si è industriato di provocare gli abitanti delle nostre frontiere, i selvaggi e spietati Indiani, le cui ben note regole di guerra sono l’indiscriminata distruzione di gente d’ogni età, sesso e condizione.

 

In every stage of these oppressions we have petitioned for redress in the most humble terms.

Our repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated injury.

A prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

In ogni momento di queste oppressioni abbiamo fatto petizioni nei termini più umili per ristabilire l’equilibrio. Le nostre ripetute richieste hanno ottenuto in risposta soltanto ripetute offese.

Un Principe, il cui carattere è così contrassegnato da azioni tipiche di un tiranno è inadatto a governare un Popolo libero.

 

Nor have we been wanting in attention to our British brethren.

We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us.

Né abbiamo mancato di attenzione ai nostri fratelli inglesi.

Noi li abbiamo avvisati di quando in quando dei tentativi della loro legislazione di estendere un’ingiustificabile giurisdizione sopra di noi.

 

We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here.

We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence.

Noi abbiamo ricordato loro le circostanze della nostra migrazione e colonizzazione di queste terre.

Noi ci siamo appellati al loro innato senso di giustizia e magnanimità e li abbiamo scongiurati per i legami della nostra affinità di spirito di rinnegare queste usurpazioni, le quali avrebbero inevitabilmente spezzato i nostri legami e corrispondenze.

 

We must therefore acquiesce in the necessity which denounces our separation and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, enemies in war, in peace friends.

Dobbiamo perciò accettare la necessità che denuncia la nostra separazione e considerarli come consideriamo il resto del genere umano: nemici in guerra, in pace amici.

 

We, therefore, the representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, in the name and by the authority of the good people of these colonies, do solemnly publish and declare that these united colonies are and of right ought to be free and independent states; that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown and that all political connection between them and the state of Great Britain is and ought to be totally dissolved and that, as free and independent states, they have full power to levey war, conclude peace, contract alliances, establish commerce and to do all other acts and things which independent states may of right do.

For the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.

Pertanto, noi, rappresentanti degli Stati Uniti d’America, in Congresso Generale riuniti, facendo appello al Supremo Giudice del mondo per la giustezza delle nostre intenzioni, nel nome e per l’autorità della buona gente di queste colonie, solennemente e pubblicamente dichiariamo che queste colonie unite sono e per diritto devono essere Stati indipendenti e liberi; che sono sciolti da qualsiasi obbligo di fedeltà alla Corona inglese e che tutti i legami politici tra esse e lo Stato di Gran Bretagna è e deve essere del tutto dissolto e che, come Stati indipendenti, esse hanno pieni poteri di muover guerra, concludere pace, trattare alleanze, stabilire commerci e fare tutte le altre azioni e cose che gli Stati indipendenti possono fare per diritto.

A sostegno di questa Dichiarazione, affidandoci fermamente alla protezione della Divina Provvidenza, reciprocamente ci impegniamo con le nostre vite, le nostre fortune ed il nostro sacro onore.
