The concept of European Citizen
What
does it mean to be a European Citizen?
This is the typical question to which the majority of European Citizens have
strived to provide
a concrete and definite answer.
A
disadvantage which may arise from us denying our collective belonging to the
European Union is that we would not be able to take advantage of all the
benefits that the European Union offers us.
As students of Regina Margherita who participated in the Comenius Project, we
gave our hospitality to students of other countries from May 8th until May 13th.
The
most important thing was the way to notice the diversity existent between our
cultures though we belong to the same
Union
.
Taking advantage of this fantastic
opportunity, we compared our Nations from the social politic and cultural point
of view.
Thanks
to the interesting debates developed in the English language we had a clear and
definite sense of belonging to the Eu even if we are still too young to fully
appreciate it.
We have come to the conclusion that in order for one to be a European Citizen,
it is not sufficient to merely state it. One must declare with full awareness
and affirm that in order for someone to be a European citizen it is necessary to
approve and respect the political, social, and cultural diversities that exist
between the different European nations. Hence we must be tolerant towards those
who don’t share the same religious beliefs and we must strive to put into
practice all of the laws included in the European Constitution.
We
learned a lot of things thanks to this experience! We also made clear many
doubts about Ue and, notwithstanding our cultural diversity we were able to
establish a wonderful friendship, ... following, especially, the line of the
European Motto: United in Diversity!
