Rookie Summer Nuove reclute
It's the beginning of summer and Baywatch is looking for a few new rookie lifeguards and a new Captain to oversee all the beaches. Among the dozens of men and women competing to enter Rookie School are Mitch's son Hobie (longtime series regular Jeremy Jackson); Lani McKensie, (Carmen Electra of MTV fame); April Giminski (Kelly Packard of California Dreams); Skylar Bergman, a local woman who wants to become a paramedic (newcomer Marliece Andrada); and Manny Gutierrez, Hobie's friend from Junior Guards (Jose Solano, in his second year as a Baywatch regular). Emotions run high during the qualifying race as each candidate has their own reasons to want this job. Manny has been training for this moment all year, and he crosses the finish line first in the qualifying race. There's a desperate run for the last spot on the roster, with the loser, a frat boy named Richie, (Mark Auerbach) starting a fight. April, a lake swimmer who's not used to the surf, doesn't make the cut, but her disappointment turns to happiness a while later when another rookie is injured and Mitch offers April the open spot, further angering young Richie. Inspired by the youthful enthusiasm of the rookie candidates, Mitch recalls his own Rookie Summer, his long-time love of lifeguarding renewed. When he's offered a promotion to Captain, he turns it down, deciding to stay on the beach. Mitch is concerned by about Hobie's seeming lack of commitment to Lifeguarding. He gave less than 100% in the qualifying swim, barely making the cut. Hobie reminds his father that it's not easy being the son of a living legend, and Mitch agrees to cut him some slack. Meanwhile, Manny who wants to be a Baywatch Lifeguard more than anything in the world, fails the eye test due to a technicality and is disqualified from Rookie School. When Mitch offers to help him get a lesser job as a lifeguard at a local beach club, Manny angrily refuses, breaking a window in Mitch's office before storming out. Rookie candidate Lani McKensie came to Lifeguard tryouts after meeting Baywatch veteran Cody Madison (3rd year series regular David Chokachi) in Hawaii, where she was his dive guide. She hopes to make it as a professional dancer in LA. When she gets a shot at performing at a local club, Cody is in the audience. When Lani's ex-boyfriend Darren (Hamilton Von Watts) starts harassing her, Cody gets in the middle. Lani tells Cody that Darren thinks she came to the mainland to follow him - he had seen them talking together on Cody's trip to Hawaii and thought Cody was hitting on her. The next day, Darren interrupts Lani and Sheryl jogging on the beach and tells Lani he wants her to come back to Hawaii with him. She refuses and firmly tells him not only isn't she going back to Hawaii, but she also has no intention of getting back together with him. Later on, Darren shows up on a surfboard while Lani and the other Rookies are training. Cody swims out and challenges Darren, and they get into a fight. Darren takes off, threatening to sue Cody. Later, Lani is late for a meeting with Cody and he becomes concerned. With the help of headquarters, he tracks down the freighter that Darren came in on and rushes to the boat to look for Lani. Darren is holding her captive on board, planning to take her back to Hawaii. Cody and Darren struggle violently and Cody is starting to lose the battle when Lani, escaping through a porthole, grabs a fire extinguisher and shoots it off into Darren's face, giving Cody the chance he needs to finish the fight. Darren is sent back to Hawaii to face a prior assault charge and a prison term.
The Choice La scelta
Veteran lifeguard Jack 'JD' Darius was a rookie at Baywatch years ago, before moving to Daytona Beach. Now he's back at Baywatch to apply for the vacant Lieutenant position. His competition is a smart, confident, and ambitious young woman, Taylor Walsh, who is also applying for the job with the recommendation of the Chief. Because of his absence, Mitch insists that JD go through qualifying tests with the rookies, so JD reluctantly joins them for pier rescue training with a dummy victim. Skylar, disoriented when she slips off the pier, gets caught in the current that drags her toward the pilings and has to use the dummy as a shield to keep from getting smashed against the pilings. Mitch sends JD in to help her out, but the situation brings on unpleasant memories of a pier rescue in Daytona that went wrong, resulting in the death of the young man he was trying to save. When JD freezes up, Newman has to come in and save Skylar. Safe, but shaken, Skylar takes comfort from Mitch telling her she did everything right. JD speaks up and tells them that the decision to use the dummy as a shield is much harder when it is a real victim, but Mitch insists that a lifeguard must follow the book when making a rescue. Later, Sky asks JD why he froze in the water and he confides in her about his pier experience. Meanwhile Mitch, concerned with JD's actions, calls JD's old boss in Daytona to find out the real story. When Mitch confronts JD about the pier accident, JD gets angry and leaves Baywatch. While JD is packing up his stuff to leave, he sees a fisherman in his boat get caught in the surf because his motor has broken down. JD breaks into an empty tower, calls in the accident to Baywatch, and rushes into the water to save the fisherman. When notified by headquarters, Mitch and Taylor respond. As JD reaches the fisherman, the current is pulling them both towards the rocks. Breaking the rules, JD puts himself between the hazard and the victim, is knocked out, and sinks to the bottom. Mitch and Taylor reach the site and Mitch dives to find JD while Taylor goes to rescue the fisherman. JD is tangled up in his rescue can harness, and Mitch has to struggle to get him free. Although the fisherman escapes harm, JD isn't breathing. The team watches anxiously as Mitch and Taylor perform CPR on JD. Mitch finally has to make a tough decision about the Lieutenant position. Although JD has the experience and qualifications, he has lots to work out personally that make him a less viable candidate. Mitch needs someone he can count on, and the job goes to Taylor. In her first official act, Taylor hires JD as a Baywatch lifeguard.

Meanwhile, Mitch uses Cody to help him meet a young woman, Jenny Wade, that he's been watching ride her horse on the beach every morning. Cody fakes a 'citation' to get her home address and is thoroughly amused by Mitch's infatuation. Later, Mitch signs Hobie up for classes at Jenny's riding school as a way to get to know Jenny better. Hobie catches on rather quickly that the lessons are only a ploy, and once he meets Jenny willing goes along with the charade. Jenny's horse, 'To The Max' is a champion, but is recuperating from hock surgery - and Jenny is worried he may never be able to compete again. To take her mind off the upcoming doctor's report, Mitch takes Jenny on a picnic that gets out of control when they see a car go over a cliff. Mitch rescues the woman who was driving - and she turns out to not only be pregnant, but in labor. Mitch and Jenny deliver the baby on the beach as the lifeguard call car arrives. The very unusual date has a dramatic ending when Mitch is called to help on yet another emergency. While Cody and JD are finishing up after a very successful dive collecting sea urchins, they hear a call for help from a nearby boat. One of their divers never came back from exploring a rock formation. Cody and JD can't dive anymore or they'll risk getting the bends and Captain Bob isn't certified, so Lani volunteers to go on a search and rescue dive. At first they won't let her because her cold has clogged her ears and breathing and she won't be able to compensate for the pressure properly. But there's no one else and they reluctantly suit her up and she dives off in search of the missing diver. A few minutes later Mitch and April show up and dive in to help. When Lani finds the man lost in the rock formations, out of air and totally panicked, she tries to calm him down and they begin to share her air. As they begin to ascend, Lani suddenly grabs her head and panics in convulsions. Mitch and April reach her and Mitch tries to calm Lani down and get her back to the surface while April and the other diver buddy breathe as they ascend to safety as well. But the damage has been done - Lani's eardrums have been ruptured and she has lost her hearing, maybe forever. She's devastated and inconsolable - Cody feels helpless and thinks he's to blame for the situation. Mitch finally gets back to Jenny and she tells him that Max is never going to jump again. Although this is a sad moment for her, she realizes that Max will be better off grazing in a green pasture.

Mitch is happy to see Craig again and they catch up on their lives since Craig left Baywatch. Craig is going through a lot - a separation from his wife and re-evaluation of his life and job as a lawyer. Donna and Neely join them, and Neely embarrasses everyone with her flirtatious behavior and clumsiness. Donna begins to suspect that something is wrong with Neely. The next day while testing Neely on various diagnoses, Donna subtly reminds Neely that a blood test is required for re-certification. When it comes down to the wire, Neely refuses to go through recertification, instead opting to try for a lifeguard spot at a local beach club where the regulations are more lax. She also refuses Donna's offer of help and storms out of Baywatch headquarters. Hobie is convinced by his friends to get a fake ID so he can get into the hottest nightclub in LA, Club Rio. When they get to the club, a dancer named 'Kyla' is challenging all takers to a 'dance-off'. If anyone can out-dance her they win the jackpot, $1,200. Hobie takes the challenge. When the police come to force the old man off the beach, a crowd of supporters for the old Indian keep them away. As the confrontation escalates, Eyes That See At Night quietly dies. Mitch and Craig do CPR, but he's traveled beyond their measures - and as they look up an eagle appears in the sky, and flies off toward the horizon. Full Throttle Una scommessa pericolosa
When Neely finds an apartment for her and Ashley, but has to wait for renovations to be complete, Mitch invites the two of them to stay with him for a couple of days. Neely has also taken a second job waitressing to come up with the money for the security deposit and Mitch soon finds himself appointed as Ashley's babysitter for the evening. He rediscovers his parenting skills although watching the football game while swaying to keep Ashley quiet wasn't his original plan for the evening. A friendly Scarab race with April and Jordan against Cody and Newmie starts getting serious when the women lose and want a rematch, and two rich local hotshots, Spenser and Cooper, taunt Cody into thinking about a big charity race scheduled for Sunday to benefit Camp Baywatch. But Newmie convinces Cody that against the other men's state-of-the-art boat, he wouldn't stand a chance. In the rematch against the women, they compete in a water skills competition - wave runners, windsurfing, and paddleboarding. Despite the women's best efforts, the men squeak out a victory. However, when Newmie and Cody run into Spenser and Cooper again while driving Mitch's private Scarab, Cody can't ignore their challenge and agrees to race them - and bets with Mitch's boat as the prize. Later on, Cody and Newmie challenge the women again in a race to rescue some swimmers in trouble, but Cody gets tangled in the tether of his rescue can and injures his knee. That night, Mitch is organizing the regular poker game, but things don't shape up as he hoped when Manny and JD cancel out and Cody shows up with his leg in an air cast. To add to the now-destroyed evening, Neely comes home and reveals that her new landlord ripped her off by stealing her security deposit and her babysitter was in a fender bender - leaving Mitch to once again watch Ashley while she goes off to her nightly waitressing job. Mitch assures Neely that she can stay as long as she needs to and tries to salvage the evening by dealing Ashley into the poker game. While playing hands, Cody admits he bet Mitch's boat in a race, but with his knee messed up, it doesn't look like he'll be able to be very competitive. When Mitch shows up with Cody and Newmie to pull out of the grudge match with Spenser and Cooper, he gets suckered into taking on the two hotshots himself with Newmie. What they don't know is that the other men have hot-wired their boat for extra speed. During the race, their jury-rigged electrical wiring blows, fusing the controls. Spenser and Cooper leap overboard to avoid the electrical fire but the boat keeps on racing at high speed - towards an oil platform. Mitch and Newmie manuever their Scarab alongside the damaged boat. Mitch leaps on board and stuffs rags into the intake valve, halting the boat just shy of the platform and a major disaster. That night, Neely admits to Mitch that she wasn't very good at waitressing, and was fired from her job. Her dejection at not being able to get the extra money to move into an apartment with Ashley turns to happiness when Mitch tells her that the two of them are moving in permanently - showing her how they're going to paint and redecorate one of his rooms just for his new, favorite little girl, who just happens to like football and is a great poker player! And Mitch and Neely share a moment that's an unspoken beginning for the two of them.

Garner later tells Mitch that Donovan is the head drug dealer. Donovan seems to have taken a liking to Neely, to the chagrin of Mitch and Garner. Unfortunately, they are discovered by Donovan's major domo, Lukas, and try to get away, but Lukas has recognized them. Garner proposes that Neely infiltrate the boat and plant a bug. Neely gets on board and hides the bug, but when Lukas tells Donovan that he saw Mitch and Garner the other night snooping around, Donovan takes Neely prisoner. Later, when out on watercraft, the rookies spot the culprit. Cody and Newman chase the guy down, only to discover that it's Richie, the Lifeguard reject from a previous episode. Manny returns to Baywatch to apologize to Mitch for losing his temper, and to ask if Mitch will help him get the job lifeguarding at the nearby beach club. Manny has decided to put off college and work full time to earn the money for the laser surgery he needs to qualify as a County Lifeguard. He knows he belongs at Baywatch, and is willing to do whatever it takes to earn his place there. Touched and impressed by Manny's commitment, Mitch arranges for him to be let back into Rookie School in time for the qualifying race, The Gauntlet. Inspired by the young Rookies, Mitch wistfully recalls his own Rookie Summer, 25 years ago, and his youthful affair with Betsy Wexler (Sonia Satra). He warns Hobie good-naturedly that he's going to be looking over his shoulder every day for the rest of Hobie's life.
Countdown All'ultimo secondo
While manning a tower, Mitch notices a little girl playing with a small, round object. He picks up his binoculars and watches in horror as he realizes it's a hand grenade - and the little girl pulls the pin. Racing towards her, he grabs it out of her hand and hurls it into open water where it explodes. Two other boys have found grenades as well, and Mitch gets to them before they pull the pins on those as well. Cody, hearing the explosion, comes to the scene, and helps Mitch locate the broken box on shore and account for all the grenades that were stored there. Later, Mitch finds out from his old SEAL connections that a cache of weapons was recently stolen from the Marines and they're trying to track down the thieves and the missing weapons. Cody heads out on Craig's boat to do sweeps of the ocean in hopes of discovering the location of the weapons. He finds an underwater mass on sonar, and when he and Mitch dive to investigate, they find a recently sunken boat - and the missing weapons. The armament in located in a hatch in the boat where there's an air pocket. As Mitch and Cody search the room, they realize how unstable and dangerous the boat is becoming and prepare to leave to get more help. Just then, the thieves, Ray and Vance, show up and after a struggle in which Cody is shot in the arm with a speargun, Mitch and Cody are captured and tied up. As Ray and Vance are unloading the ordinance, Mitch gets free from his ropes, unties Cody, and they pretend to still be tied up when Ray and Vance return. As Ray sets a C-4 plastique bomb to destroy the boat and their captives in 5 minutes, Mitch and Cody spring into action. During the ensuing fight, Mitch rams Ray into the fragile wall of the compartment, which collapses - pinning Cody in the wreckage and sending Mitch, Ray and Vance in a wild three-way fight to the surface. Ray and Vance get away on their boat, but Mitch climbs aboard the scarab to call for backup to catch the fugitives. In the sunken boat, Cody is trapped and the water is quickly rising in the damaged compartment - and the bomb is ticking down the minutes to detonation. Just as Cody is down to his last 2 inches of air, Mitch gets back to him and frees him from the wreckage. They are down to one breath of air - and have to ascent 75 feet to the surface. Caroline calls in the emergency to headquarters, asks for backup, and searches for what she presumes to be a missing swimmer. When Mitch and Manny arrive, Manny translates that the family was on the beach having a picnic when Lucinda's older daughter, Rosanna, went into the water and never came out. During the time of the disappearance, around 4:55, Lucinda had gone to her car and Cody, the lifeguard on duty, had closed his tower early instead of finishing his scheduled shift at 5:00. Other lifeguards now join the massive search that quickly escalates into a media frenzy as the story unfolds. Cody and Lani return to headquarters and hear of the missing girl near his tower. When Mitch confronts him, he confesses that his watch is five minutes fast and he took off early to meet Lani for a movie. As soon as Lucinda sees him she pinpoints him as the one responsible for her daughter's disappearance. Further conversations with Manny and Lucinda reveal that Rosanna was having problems with her boyfriend, Diego. He was supposed to meet them at the beach, but never showed up. When Diego appears at the scene, he tells the lifeguards it was possible that Rosanna was pregnant. The search intensifies as this submersion is now ruled as a possible suicide. Mitch is frantically pulled between his superiors, the fruitless search and rescue efforts, and the intrusive media. Cody is also wracked with guilt and is feeling helpless in the melee. As the sky darkens Mitch, sadly, with no sign of the victim, orders that the search and rescue operation be called off and replaced with a recovery operation. There's no longer any hope that the girl will be found alive or in any condition in which she could be revived. Later that night, back at headquarters, Mitch is told to have Cody's resignation on the Chief's desk in the morning. Frustrated, angry, and tired of being pulled in too many directions, Mitch quits as Captain of Baywatch.
Diabolique La baby-sitter
Sara, a troubled young woman, attempts suicide by setting her boat on fire. Mitch rescues her just before the boat explodes. She is very grateful . . .and is obviously attracted to him, although he is somewhat uncomfortable with her attentions. Meanwhile, Newman created a kite-flying contest for the benefit of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. His nephew Todd, stricken with the disease, has become an embittered little boy, jealous of activities other boys engage in while he has to deal with the daily regime of blood sugar tests and insulin shots. April and Manny get involved, building a rather pathetic kite of their own and try to reach out to Todd to convince him that he can lead the normal life of a 12-year-old boy - it's all in the attitude. Sara, after sending thank-you flowers to Mitch, is hired by his mother, Irene, to be a temporary nanny for young Ashley. Irene is delighted with Sara, who seems to be great with the baby, but Mitch is a bit skeptical, wanting to check her references. They agree to give Sara a test run. Sara gives Mitch another strange and unwelcome gift - a tape of the song "Someone to Watch Over Me". Sara's behavior gets more and more bizarre. She drugs Irene so she falls asleep in order to set up a situation in which Mitch sees that Sara was conveniently around to take care of Ashley as her grandmother slumbers. That night she enters Mitch's bedroom in a sexy nightgown and attempts to seduce him. Finally, concerned for the safety of both Ashley and his mother, Mitch fires her. She flips out, screaming and ranting, self-mutilating herself to make the argument look like an attempted rape. Two passers-by come to her 'rescue' and mistakenly attack Mitch, believing Sara needs rescuing from him. Sara disappears during the melee. Sara returns to the house where Irene is taking a shower and kidnaps Ashley. Irene is terrified and Mitch, Newman, April, and Manny go off on a high-speed search. They find Ashley in her baby chair on the beach, with a series of photographs showing the infant and Sara together in mother-and-child poses, convincing them that Sara is unbalanced and a threat to everyone. Sara returns to the house and ties up Irene in the bedroom. Mitch comes home and finds Sara in a slinky dress and her dyed blonde - she's become a drop-dead ringer for Neely. Mitch realized he has to be careful and humors Sara for a while by pretending to believe in her psychotic fantasy. Then he tells her he checked her references and learned the true story of a husband, Mr. Scanion, who divorced his wife and remarries a nanny named Sara Conion. Sara is actually the demented ex- Mrs. Scanion who has assumed the identity of the nanny she believes destroyed her life! Sara completely flips out and attacks Mitch in a rage. An intense fight ensues, and Sara is finally subdued. Mitch frees Irene, Ashley is safe, and the cops take custody of the wounded and demented Sara. April and Manny got last place in the kite-flying contest, losing to a bunch of kids. However, Todd finally opens up to April, appreciating her efforts to give him a more positive attitude, and promises to take a more optimistic approach to his situation. Someday, a cure may be found and he has to make every day count until then,
Surf City La capitale del surf
Cody watches in amazement as tandem surfing champions Anna Shisler and Bobby Friedman demonstrate the grace of their art. Intrigued and fascinated, he believes that he and Lani could be just as good at the difficult sport - and that it would be a great thing for them to do together and share. Cody convinces Lani that they should at least give it a shot with Anna and Bobby as their instructors. At headquarters, Mitch finds Craig a bit pensive as he ponders the latest news about his ex-wife: she's dating some 22-year-old stud. Having watched Craig looking at April, Mitch lets him know that April and Manny have just called it quits. Later, April tells Craig the whole story - Manny wouldn't go with her to the benefit dinner in honor of her dead brother, Charlie, and she thinks he's still ashamed to be seen with her. While they're talking, they spot a gang of reckless jet skiers riding the surf and endangering the surfers. Eventually Kelly and Craig have to rescue a surfer who is injured as the jet skiers take off. Craig is enraged by the incident and vows to bring the jet skiers in. Mitch tells him that personal watercraft can also be helpful, indicating the Baywatch Sea-Doo. An old-school vet, Craig starts to wonder if maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks. April agrees to teach him how to use the Sea-Doo, making it obvious that she's somewhat attracted to him. Manny can't help but notice the chemistry and is immediately jealous and angry. To make matters worse, April invites Craig to attend the benefit dinner in honor of her late brother with her. Craig enthusiastically agrees.
Bon Voyage Agguato tra i ghiacci (parte I)
Some miles off the Santa Monica coast, a pair of desperate jewel thieves scuba dive for a legendary cache of uncut emeralds. When Robby Quinn surfaces with the jewels, his partner, Leslie Stryker, a gorgeous blonde, decides they should keep the jewels for themselves and not deliver them to their ring leader, Gavin. Robby fears Gavin and is reluctant to double cross him. Not willing to let her partner ruin her chance at the emerald treasure, Leslie knocks him unconscious with a dive tank, and leaves him for dead. Moments later, several lifeguards retrieve Quinn's lifeless body and proceed with CPR. Leslie spots the lifeguards and grows concerned that Robby may still be alive. In an attempt to get closer to Robby, she stages her own drowning. Hobie makes the save and takes her to headquarters, where she learns that Robby Quinn is alive in a semi-conscious state. Taken by her beauty, Hobie develops a crush on Leslie and invites her on the trip to Alaska he just won by entering a contest sponsored by Princess Cruises. Meanwhile, Mitch also has his hands full with his houseguest, Neely, and her newborn baby. Neely confides to Mitch that she's thinking about reuniting with her ex-husband, who now lives in Alaska. She has decided to join the others on the Alaska cruise and try to find her ex. Sensing that this may be a difficult time for Neely, Mitch decides to surprise her and go on the cruise with the rest of the gang. Cody also decides to go in hope of surprising Lani, who was chosen as the cover model for the Inside Sports photo shoot. In Vancouver, Neely, Donna and Lani board the magnificent Dawn Princess and check into their cabins. Hobie and Leslie are right behind them. Gavin, the jewel thief that Leslie double-crossed, has learned that she is on the cruise and also boards, warily eyeing each passenger, hoping to spot the young, blonde. Having never met her, Leslie fools Gavin with her short, red hair disguise.
White Thunder at Glacier Bay Agguato tra i ghiacci (parte II e III)
Part I After boarding without Neely, Lani, or Donna seeing them, Mitch and Cody surprise their colleagues by appearing at dinner. Hobie and Leslie make it obvious that they know when they're not wanted. Hobie also knows that his father still disapproves of his impulse to invite a total stranger with them on the cruise. When the ship docks in Ketchikan, Mitch and Cody prepare for a day of salmon fishing while Hobie and Leslie plan an outing in town. As Hobie and Clair are departing the ship, Clair spots Gavin at the gangplank anxiously scanning the crowd as they leave the ship. She quickly offers to baby-sit Neely's infant, finding a convenient way to stay onboard while Gavin searched for her off the ship. Fortunately for Leslie, Gavin has met Donna, who he mistakes for Leslie because of her long blond hair. Donna, on the other hand, believes she has found her millionaire dream man. Mitch and Cody are enjoying their day of salmon fishing, when a ferocious grizzly bear attacks Neely and forces them to make a daring rescue in the ice cold lake. Back on the ship, Neely recovers from her brush with death and thanks Mitch for saving her life. The moment grows in intensity and Mitch and Neely find themselves locked in a kiss. Confused by the moment, Mitch excuses himself and Neely is left to ponder her actions and her planned reunion with her ex-husband the next day. With few options aboard the ship, Leslie plots to escape from Gavin by renting a paraglider at the next port and gliding over the mountaintops to safety. Hobie joins Leslie on the paragliding excursion, unaware that she is not planning to return to the ship. Gavin manages to follow them to the take-off point.
Part II Narrowly escaping Gavin for the moment, a clueless Hobie and Leslie take off on paragliders over the Alaskan mountaintops. Gavin is soon right behind them, brandishing a gun. With a confused Hobie following, Leslie lands her glider and takes off running. Gavin is in hot pursuit, eventually forcing them into an ice cavern from which they cannot escape. Mitch, putting together the clues, realizes that Hobie is in a deadly situation, and gets Cody to help him come to the rescue. They track the three of them down to the ice cavern on the glacier and a violent fight ensues. Mitch and Cody manage to finally capture Gavin and Leslie who are then arrested and sent to jail. Back on the ship, Neely tells Mitch that she couldn't go through with reuniting with her ex-husband when she is actually in love with someone else. Mitch asks who she is in love with, and she replies with a tender kiss. The long-standing affection they've held for one another is finally revealed. A now self-assured Mitch offers his life-long love to Neely by presenting her with an engagement ring. Overwhelmed with joy, she happily accepts his proposal and they are married in an elegant ceremony onboard the ship, followed by and incredible honeymoon in the Alaskan wilderness.
