Torniamo al film PEOPLE I KNOW!

People I Know, Lee Marshall - Anyone who wants to see Al Pacino in his one of his most impressive roles since Scent Of A Woman is going to have to get on a plane to Rome, at least for the time being. A combination of commercial bad timing and self-regulatory censorship has meant that Miramax still has no US release scheduled for this tight, dark, compelling political drama, over a year after it was wrapped and ready. People I Know has emerged in Italy, however, where it took $682,000 from 274 screens in its first weekend for a screen average of $2,489. Sophisticated urban markets in Europe and elsewhere look to be its best hope, at least until the US comes out of its don't-rock-the-boat coma. The whiff of censorship could even turn into a box-office boost if distributors take the bull by the horns and sell this as the film that is too hot for America to handle, a strategy which CDI in Italy has so far failed to capitalise on. Daniel Algrant (Sex And The City) examines the New York of corrupt political cabals, and is openly critical of an unnamed, right-wing mayor who, Pacino's character complains, is one of those responsible for turning the town into a "police state" in which "a lot of people... have come to fear us and hate us". One can see, as with The Quiet American and Buffalo Soldiers, Miramax's dilemma: in the present climate of grin-and-bear-it solidarity, the film's bad-ass attitude to US politics means that it is going to be a difficult prospect on home ground, even more than a year after September 11. In less troubled times, Al Pacino's performance as a tired, jaded, pill-popping New York publicist and theatrical agent struggling to hold onto the only thing that reminds him he is human - his militant past as a civil liberties campaigner - would be on the fast track to an Oscar awards campaign. The action takes place over 24 hours in a New York that has a nicely dark, grainy, 1970s feel to it - a feel reinforced by the cool urban jazz soundtrack. The audience first see Ely Wurman - who hails from Georgia - at the Broadway opening of a play he's representing: a no-hoper, like many of his recent briefs. Soon he's drafted in to mop up a mess left behind by Carry Launer (O'Neal), the only celebrity actor who has stayed faithful to him. Carry sends Ely to bail out a dazed and confused supermodel girlfriend (Leoni), who drags the publicist off to an exclusive Wall Street opium party, where he is surprised to recognise some really heavyweight movers and shakers. Things spiral, as they say: Ely slips into a twilight zone of growing menace, compounded by lack of sleep and a cocktail of prescription drugs. The only still point in his physical and moral loss of control is represented by Victoria (Basinger), his dead brother's wife, who has come up from Georgia to get Ely out of the New York jungle and tempt him back to the old country. Unfortunately, she's too late. The dialogue is sharp, edgy, and occasionally hilarious (Ely, looking around the supermodel's hotel boudoir: "This is not a room - it's a vagina"). Pacino's magnetic performance as a good guy in a bad world who is too tired even to emote is given strong support by Leoni, O'Neal, Basinger and Richard Schiff (from the West Wing) as a Machiavellian New York Jewish leader. Just occasionally, the insider's view is taken so far that certain offhand references, or the faces of certain NY society figures playing themselves, are lost on those of us from outside the Big Apple. But this minor distraction is also one of the things that gives the film its air of authority. Pacino fans, and all those who care about cinema, should chase this one around the world.

Variety  - A Miramax Films (in U.S.)/Medusa Film-CDI (in Italy) release of a Myriad Pictures presentation of a South Fork Pictures production, in association with Galena/GreeneStreet Films, Chal Prods., InMotion, WMF V. Reviewed at Metropolitan Cinema, Rome, Oct. 4,2002. MPAA Rating: R. Running time: 100 MIN. While Rudy Giuliani's name is never pronounced, the references to the former mayor-turned-national hero's tenure as top man of NYC are clear in "People I Know," whose bitingly critical view of the period might explain why Miramax's still-pending U.S. release has been continually pushed back. But this compelling 24-hour odyssey into the life of a world-- weary Gotham publicist, driven by a vivid performance from Al Pacino, deserves some theatrical exposure (although pic has already popped up on airlines). Despite sensitivity over its portrayal of the rotten underbelly of celebrity, politics and the power elite, sophisticated urban audiences both in the U.S. and abroad should tap into the textured drama's incisive script and fascinating characters, fueling arthouse mileage. Shot in early 2001 and just completing post when the events of Sept. 11 changed the rules overnight regarding screen depictions of New York, this brooding character study-cum-- thriller couldn't have come along at a more inopportune time. The much discussed shot in which Pacino's drug-and-booze-addled character, in a post-binge haze, sees the World Trade towers lying on their sides has been removed. But even with that strategic cut, the film's cynicism could hardly play more abrasively against the mood of renewal and rehabilitation in wounded Gotham. A not-so-distant relative of Sydney Falco in "Sweet Smell of Success," Eli Wurman (Pacino) is Georgia Jew whose youthful involvement in the civil rights movement, along with his morality, has been put aside to serve a now-depleted client list. Moth-eaten and almost washed up, he's angling to redeem himself by organizing a benefit for imprisoned Nigerian immigrants without green cards. Eli is distracted, however, when Cary Launer (Ryan O'Neal), one of his few remaining movie star clients, calls for crisis management. Launer's affair with druggy TV starlet/model Jilli Hopper (Tea Leoni) causes problems when the girl lands in jail. Launer asks Eli to bail her out and put her on a plane before the scandal can damage his chances in the upcoming senatorial race. But Jilli drags Eli downtown to a luxury Wall Street opium den and sex club. Before being thrown out, Jilli reveals she has a recording gadget with downloadable images of the club's high-profile clientele including Jewish civic leader Elliot Sharansky (Richard Schiff). Back in Jil's hotel room, Eli is onthe verge of passing out when an intruder overpowers the girl and sticks her with a fatal overdose. Unsure of what he witnessed, Eli avoids police to focus on the benefit. Led by the Rev. Lyle Blunt (Bill Nunn), the black community is up in arms about the mayor's persecution of underprivileged minorities and incensed over the lack of support from the city's well-heeled Jews. Eli corners both Blunt and Sharansky and gets them to speak at the benefit. Strong-arming Launer into attending, Eli dangles the star as a carrot to entice the two reluctant adversaries. Sleep-deprived, ailing and becoming visibly unhinged, Eli underestimates the danger from his knowledge of Jilli's murder and possession of the incriminating recording device. His vulnerability is further heightened by the presence in town of his widowed sister-in-law, Victoria (Kim Basinger), for whom his feelings clearly run deeper than friendship. Adopting a colorful Southern accent and looking distinctly haggard, Pacino conveys a cogent sense of Eli's drained state. Also palpable is the self-loathing over the direction his life has taken, squandering his Harvard law background to be a celebrity lapdog. Ranking alongside "The Insider" as Pacino's best, most controlled work in some time, it's a pained, exposed performance that rivets attention even as playwright Jon Robin Baitz's script veers at times into murky ambiguity. The drama's kinship with '70s anti-- establishment thrillers is underlined by a poster on Eli's office wall for "The Parallax View." But the information on manipulation of the Senate campaign by Sharansky and his cronies is too sketchy. Likewise the pic's ending, which cleverly aligns Eli's downfall with his media triumph and represents an audaciously downbeat conclusion rather than a Hollywood-style copout, but underdefines certain key climactic events. Generally, however, the screenplay is taut and intelligent, sizzling with enough sharp dialogue and dark humor to coast over its flaws. In addition to the unseen mayor, clear parallels between fictional characters and their real-life counterparts add to the caustic edge. Womanizing, politically ambitious Cary Launer appears inspired by Warren Beatty, while Rev. Blunt owes much to Al Sharpton. Eli himself is believed to be modeled after legendary press agent Bobby Zarem, who has publicly denied the similarities. Director Dan Algrant ("Naked in New York") keeps a propulsive grip on the action, communicating a dizzying sense of Eli's determination while working on diminishing reserves of strength and lucidity and trying to sidestep entanglement in politics. Cast is uniformly terrific. In a small but significant role, Basinger radiates tenderness, intelligence and hope; Leoni shapes a raw but nuanced character out of the jaded party girl; and Schiff brings chilly authority to Sharansky, amusingly playing off Nunn's performance of empowered umbrage as the reverend. O'Neal combines professional public-profile charm with self-centered focus and Mark Webber registers sympathetically as Eli's put-upon assistant. Peter Deming's gritty lensing puts an appropriately seedy gloss on the Manhattan settings, while Terence Blanchard's cool, jazz-tinged score quietly fuels the suspense.

Eminem's Mother Lays Into Basinger - Hollywood stunner Kim Basinger has incurred the wrath of 8 Mile co-star Eminem's mother - because Debbie Mathers claims she portrays her falsely. The film, which is loosely based on the rapper's troubled life prior to his incredible success, includes Basinger's character Stephanie Smith who is a direct representation of the Lose Yourself rapper's real life mother. His grandmother Betty Kresin has spoken of how upset Debbie is after watching the film, particularly because in Basinger's onscreen counterpart sports a bad hairstyle. Kresin says, "I know Debbie has been to see the film because she was so upset by it. Kim has a beer in her hand in the film but Debbie hardly drinks. She was unhappy about that. I've never seen alcohol in Debbie's life apart from some of the low-life men she has known. Kim's hair is so stringy in the film but Debbie always kept hers perfect. She never had one hair out of place - her kids couldn't hug her because she was worried about her hair getting messed up. Debbie keeps her home perfectly clean, but in the film Kim's trailer home is a complete mess. She told me Kim should have kept her hair good, her trailer clean and not drink beer. It has turned into the battle of the blondes. Marshall says at the beginning of the film that it is fictional but I can see why Debbie has taken it so personally. I can see much of it is based on his life."

Anche in Italia in singolo LOSE YOURSELF di Eminem ha raggiunto la # 1!

4 gennaio - 2003 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL - The brilliance of People I Know is in the creation and positioning of its unlikely hero--Eli Wurman. With a clever, insightful script and riveting direction, and using camera angles to reinforce the unsavory underpinnings of celebrity entitlement and political scandal the film exposes, Daniel Algrant creates a perfect dichotomy between the outside and inside of a privileged world. Al Pacino heats up the screen as Eli Wurman, a New York press agent pushed to his physical and emotional limits. For decades, Eli has been one of Manhattan's most renowned press agents--the guy who knows everyone. A die-hard liberal, he struggles to keep his self-respect, deteriorated after years of client abuse, by throwing fundraisers and fighting the good fight. His luck goes from mediocre to bad when he is called upon to baby-sit a tortured TV actress, a discarded plaything from his biggest client. Maneuvering through a drug-enhanced night lands him smack in the middle of a huge scandal that even he cannot survive unscathed. Cast members Téa Leoni, Kim Basinger, and Ryan O'Neal, as the spoiled client, are terrific. But it's the telltale flash in Pacino's eyes that makes People I Know come alive on screen.

12 gennaio - ETONLINE: 'Rings' Runs Circles at Foreign Box Office. SYDNEY (Variety) - Catch me if you can: That challenge from "The Lord of the Rings" blockbuster was cheerfully accepted by "8 Mile," "Catch Me If You Can" and "Two Weeks Notice" which began their foreign excursions in dashing style last weekend. Eminem starrer "8 Mile" actually beat the Middle Earth saga's third outing in Austria and was a strong No. 2 in Germany. The Leonardo DiCaprio/Tom Hanks conman caper "Catch" unseated "Rings" in its third orbit in Mexico. "Mile" drummed up $6.1 million in Germany (the fifth-biggest opening locally for a Universal release) and $902,000 in Austria. But "8 Mile" faces an uphill task in Asia, where rapper Eminem isn't a big star, judging by its moderate bows in Hong Kong ($180,000) and Taiwan ($157,000). "Catch Me If You Can" hoodwinked Mexico to the tune of $2.9 million in five days, 54% ahead of "Cast Away" and the second biggest for helmer Steven Spielberg behind "The Lost World: Jurassic Park." Meanwhile, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" became the fifth-highest grosser internationally. It unlocked an estimated $28.2 million from 55 countries, elevating the foreign total to $519.6 million and overtaking "Independence Day" on the all-time list. The Hugh Grant/Sandra Bullock romance "Two Weeks Notice" banked $2.8 million in Australia; its four-day figure was on par with "Bridget Jones's Diary" and 14.5% ahead of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." Embarking on its foreign voyage, domestic misfire "Star Trek Nemesis" beamed up a promising $3.07 million in the U.K., which ranks alongside Germany as the trekkies' strongest offshore territories. "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" captured an estimated $42.2 million from 35 markets, upping the foreign total to $293.6 million. The sequel is tracking 26% ahead of the first edition, which had racked up $232 million at the same stage of its journey. Its estimated stellar totals include the U.K.'s $59.8 million, Germany's $52 million, France's $28.4 million, Spain's $21.6 million and Australia's $15.1 million through its sophomore session. "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" whistled up $1.48 million in five days in Poland, 22% ahead of the original and the industry's second biggest debut behind "Fellowship of the Ring." The vacation in Japan boosted Chris Columbus' epic by 41% in its seventh go-round, raking in $6.1 million at the weekend and an awesome $113.1 million so far. "Die Another Day" hit $184 million overseas, spurred by an $11.7 million frame in 53 countries. The 007 adventure took an estimated $1.8 million in six days on 147 in South Korea, 65% of the last two editions, hurt by anti-U.S. sentiment and a row over the way North Koreans are portrayed. The Pierce Brosnan/Halle Berry starrer did set new Bond benchmarks in New Zealand ($511,000, Fox's fourth-highest entry) the Czech/Slovak Republics ($325,000, a Fox record), Central America and Egypt. "Minority Report" peaked at $210 million overseas, fueled by Japan's hefty $31 million through its fifth weekend. "Gangs of New York" has amassed a sturdy $14.3 million after its third in Japan. Disney's "Return to Neverland" cruised to $52 million, driven by Japan's $11.6 million after its third sojourn, where it's already outgrossed the lifetime tallies of "Atlantis," "Hercules" and "Pocahontas." The Rob Schneider laffer "The Hot Chick" wasn't so hot in Oz, fetching $1 million, better than "Animal" but below "Deuce Bigalow." Platforming in London ahead of its Jan. 17 nationwide roll-out, "Chicago" is building nicely, orchestrating $131,000 in its second stanza (up 2%) and a tony $435,000 so far. Brazilian gangster pic "City of God" stole $486,000 in Blighty, including sneaks, hailed by Miramax as the market's third-highest opening for a foreign-language film behind "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Amelie."

13 gennaio - UNIVERSAL BOX OFFICE: 8 MILE got off to a great start in its international release this weekend with excellent openings in Germany, Austria, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The weekend box office total is $8,328,198 on 597 screens in these four countries, which makes it the No. 4 film of the weekend at the international box office behind Lord of the Rings 2, Harry Potter 2, Die Another Day. Here are some of the 8 MILE highlights: In Germany, 8 MILE took in an outstanding $7.1M on 455 screens, which makes it Universal’s fifth biggest opening ever in Germany, behind only American Pie 2, Jurassic Park, The Lost World and The Mummy. It is No. 2 in the marketplace behind Lord of the Rings 2 (week 3), which grossed $9.6M on 1,100 screens. In Austria, 8 MILE grossed $903k on 73 screens. It is No. 1 in the marketplace with a 38% market share. It took over the top spot from Lord of the Rings 2 and is 28% ahead of it for the weekend. 8 MILE is our second biggest opening in Austria, behind only American Pie 2. It is the No. 15 opening of all time in Austria ahead of Star Wars: Episode 1, Men in Black 2 and XXX. Taiwan opened with $157k on 52 screens and is the No. 2 film behind Lord of the Rings 2. Hong Kong grossed an excellent $180k on 17 screens and is No. 5 in the marketplace behind three local titles and Harry Potter 2. 8 MILE will roll out overseas over the next few months. Our next openings are Thailand on January 10, Australia and Netherlands on January 16 and the U.K. and Mexico on January 17. 14 gennaio - Continua l'enorme successo del CD di "8 Mile" e di "Lose Yourfel" negli Stati Uniti. La colonna sonora di "8 Mile" è ancora al primo posto dopo 10 settimane e pure il singolo "Lose Yourseld" resiste in prima posizione dopo 16 settimane. Da EMPIRE: Eminem Ends Year On Top, But Album Sales Tumble: Eminem's "The Eminem Show" was the top-selling U.S. album of 2002 with sales of 7.6 million copies, according to year-end figures released by Nielsen SoundScan. The soundtrack to the rapper's film "8 Mile" placed fifth on sales of 3.5 million units. Still, total CD album sales were down 10.7% in 2002, marking the sharpest sales decrease from the previous year in Nielsen SoundScan's 11-year tracking history. Beyond "The Eminem Show" and "8 Mile," the top-10 selling albums of last year were "Nellyville" (4.9 million), Avril Lavigne's "Let Go" (4.1 million), Dixie Chicks' "Home" (3.7 million), Pink's "Missundaztood" (3.1 million), Ashanti's self-titled release (3.09 million), Alan Jackson's "Drive" (3.05 million), Shania Twain's "Up!" (2.9 million) and the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack (2.7 million). It was the second straight year the market declined, following steady growth since Nielsen SoundScan first began tracking the U.S. market in 1991. 2001 Total album sales in 2002 were 681 million, compared with 762.8 million the previous year. Country album sales posted the largest increase last year as sales rose 12.2% from 2001. This increase was largely fueled by such crossover sensations as Dixie Chicks, Shania Twain, Alan Jackson, and Faith Hill. In addition to her success with "Up!" Twain is also the top-selling artist of the SoundScan era. The top-10 selling albums of the past 11 years are Twain's "Come on Over" (14.5 million), Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill" (14 million), Metallica's self-titled release (13 million), Backstreet Boys' "Millennium" (12 million), "The Bodyguard" soundtrack (11.7 million), Santana's "Supernatural" (11.1 million), Creed's "Human Clay" (11.09 million), 'N Sync's "No Strings Attached" (11.02 million), Celine Dion's "Falling Into You" (10.5 million) and Britney Spears' "... Baby One More Time" (10.4 million). Additionally, according to Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems, Nickelback's "How You Remind Me" was the most-played song of 2002 with 426,507 spins, followed by Puddle Of Mudd's "Blurry" (415,417 spins).

19 gennaio - News sul nuovo film di Kim THE DOOR IN THE FLOOR. HOLLYWOOD REPORTER: "Basinger steps into 'Door' for Focus/Revere. Kim Basinger is in negotiations to star opposite Jeff Bridges in Focus Features/Revere Pictures' "Door in the Floor" for writer-helmer Tod Williams. The project, an adaptation of John Irving's novel "A Widow for One Year," centers on Ruth, a writer in her 30s who is searching for romantic happiness despite bearing emotional scars from her childhood. She never knew her two older brothers, who died as teenagers in an automobile accident, and the tragedy ultimately drives her parents apart. Her father, Ted (Bridges), a children's book writer, copes by seducing younger women, while her mother, Marion (Basinger), has sex with her father's 16-year-old assistant and abandons her family. Ted Hope and Anne Carey are producing the project. Basinger, repped by CAA, most recently starred onscreen opposite Eminem in Universal Pictures/Imagine Entertainment's "8 Mile." She next stars in "People I Know," which makes its debut at this year's Sundance Film Festival. She won a supporting actress Oscar for her role in "L.A. Confidential."

23 gennaio - Grande successo di 8 MILE in UK. YAHOO NEWS: 8 Mile tops UK box office. Eminem's movie debut 8 Mile has topped the UK box office charts after a successful opening weekend. The rapper, who stars as Jimmy Smith Jr aka Rabbit in the story, knocked Lord Of The Rings of its top spot, which it had held for four weeks. The movie is a semi-autobiographical account of Eminem's early days struggling to make his mark on the scene in his native Detroit. 8 Mile, which also stars Kim Basinger and Mekhi Phifer, took £4 million in its opening weekend, plus almost £500,000 from paid preview screenings. It follows similar success in Australia and the US, where it enjoyed similarly high box office returns. In Australia, it set records for the biggest January opening day, while in the States it has grossed over $115 million since it opened in November.
