Reports indicate that the couple have worked things out so well that they are even considering adopting another child. It appears that this is one celebrity break up that has come full circle, and now has a happy ending. When they met it was romance and fireworks. Now, after seven years of marriage, the romance may have subsided, but the fireworks continue. On January 12, actress Kim Basinger filed for divorce from her actor husband Alec Baldwin. The couple, who originally met on the set of My Stepmother is an Alien in 1988, and married after making the film The Marrying Man in 1993, had been separated since December 5, 2000. Those close to the couple had hoped that when Baldwin flew to Athens, Georgia, to celebrate the holidays with Basinger, their daughter, Ireland, and her family, things would work out between them. But, they didn't. What happened to the seemingly perfect marriage of two Hollywood giants? Why did this couple, once voted as being the couple most likely to stay together, part ways? The answer lies somewhere within the lives that these two superstars kept between themselves for so many years. Was it Alec's temper? Was it Kim's social anxiety? The answer to both questions is no. But then again, the answer may be yes. In truth, the answer is most likely somewhere in between. Baldwin, a fiery Irishman, has long had a reputation for a quick temper. His involvement in political causes and his desire to be in charge has often put him at odds with his wife. Her social phobias were bound to create problems when he was attending public functions and she was uncomfortable with meeting the people there. In fact, she attended a gathering for then-President Clinton, and barely spoke to the other guests, instead withdrawing into her protective shell. He made decisions without consulting her, as when he purchased an estate in the Hamptons, and she rebelled against them. The Hampton's estate remains unoccupied, for example, because she did not want to live on Long Island. His temper often came out in the form of verbal assaults, often reminding her of long forgotten, or so it seemed, episodes. Finally, according to Basinger and her family, these traits got the best of their marriage. It would seem that his temper came out at a time that Basinger felt was inappropriate; in front of their daughter. For the record there have no been no claims of any kind of physical abuse. The only thing that has been said is by family members, not the couple themselves, and the claims are about anger and the lack of any management of that anger. Basinger in contrast to her husband is much quieter, not seeking quite as much of public life. She did not enjoy, in fact she feared, the life that an actress must lead. She would often withdraw into the confines of her home for extended periods of time. Friends have said that Kim is a passive individual, more interested in the behind the scenes activities she's involved with, rather than taking the forefront. This, evidently did not meet his expectations of what her role should be. Basinger wanted to live a less public life, and as a result tensions grew within the marriage. Basinger has commented in the past that it has been hard for Baldwin to live with the restrictions that the panic disorder imposed upon her life and thus on his. Yet she also said that he was her support to manage her anxiety in situations that she could not avoid. Perhaps her burdens triggered his anger as his anger triggered her anxiety. Only the two of them will ever know as marriage is a closed book to all but the couple. However, it has been speculated by Basinger's father, that the marriage would have ended long ago, had it not been for Ireland. Will the divorce become final? No one knows, but for fans hopeful for a reconciliation, there is one ray of hope. Neither Baldwin nor Basinger has ever denied their feelings toward one another. With this in mind, perhaps the two of them can reach a mutual understanding and each find it within themselves to accept the other as they are, while changing their own behaviors to move toward a common ground. National Enquirer: "A FED-UP KIM Basinger has dumped short-tempered hubby Alec Baldwin, moved out of their house, and is gearing up for a divorce battle that's already turning nasty, The ENQUIRER has learned exclusively. After Kim moved out with their 5-year-old daughter, she fled to Georgia and the fiery couple spent Christmas apart. Alec spent the holidays with the Baldwin clan in Long Island. Now a desperate Alec is making an eleventh-hour bid to save his seven-year marriage -- even flying to Kim's hometown of Athens, Ga., and pleading with her to return to his side. On December 28, Alec was at an Athens condo owned by Kim's father Donald -- maneuvering to win back his estranged wife, The ENQUIRER discovered. "Alec's here, and he's with Kim and their daughter Ireland," divulged Kim's sister Ashley Brewer. "They're at our father's condo. "Kim is very, very emotional. Alec might say she's odd -- they've had fights and their problems. But for a long time she dept their marriage together." Alec's single-minded goal: a reconciliation, according to Ashley. But the volatile 42-year-old actor has little chance of succeeding, say sources. Kim's moving to Los Angeles full-time and has decided to end her marriage. Meanwhile, "Alec is telling Kim, 'Let's not file (for divorce) now, let's wait,' " said a pal. "He said that in mid-January he was going to begin working on a new movie in the New York area. He told Kim that this period of time could act as a 'cooling-off period.' " But 47-year-old Kim wants out, insists the pal. And The ENQUIRER has learned that divorce lawyers on two coasts have been consulted for what's shaping up to be an ugly battle. Famed New York divorce attorney Raoul Felder confided to The ENQUIRER that he's become "involved" in the case. And Los Angeles lawyer Dennis Wasser -- who represented Clint Eastwood, Jane Fonda, Steven Spielberg and others -- has also been consulted. Sadly, the couple's little daughter Ireland is caught in the middle. Baldwin is intent on remaining in the New York City area, where he is actively involved in local politics and has built his own soundstage. Kim, who won an Oscar for her role in "L.A. Confidential," is going to live on the West coast. "Kim will undoubtedly want Ireland to go to school in the Los Angeles area near her," said a source. "And Alec will clearly want to spend time with her -- which is going to cause a real problem if they live on separate coasts. Something is going to have to give!". Experts consulted by The ENQUIRER revealed there's plenty of ammo stockpiled for Baldwin vs. Basinger. Both stars have had major problems -- which can be turned against them in a custody battle. Beautiful Kim has publicly revealed she's been plagued throughout her life by depression, painful shyness, anxiety and panic attacks. She once kept herself housebound for six months because of her agoraphobia, a fear of going outdoors. The talented actress also admitted that during a party she and Alec once threw for the Clintons, she sobbed hysterically in the bathroom because she couldn't handle the crush of guests. Top Los Angeles psychiatrist Carole Lieberman, who has testified in divorce suits, told The ENQUIRER how Baldwin could exploit Kim's phobias in a brutal battle for child custody. "Alec could ask, 'What is it going to be like for my daughter to be growing up with a single mother who's afraid to take her out to play? What kind of life is that?'. "Having agoraphobia doesn't make anyone an unfit mother -- but Alec could use her condition to say, "This would compromise the way the child is being raised." Confided a source: "Kim is a walking bundle of nerves and neuroses. "She's also a strict vegetarian, and the littlest things caused problems. There's a burger joint called Fatburger near their L.A. home. Alec would often slip out to get one, and Kim would grill him when he returned, demanding to know if he ate any burgers." New York attorney John Vassallo, whose clients have included Mick Jagger, Peter Jennings and Harvey Keitel, told The ENQUIRER that Kim's well-publicized emotional problems could be used by Baldwin to raise questions about "whether her behavior could be damaging to the child if she were granted custody.". There are other factors that could be used against Baldwin. In the past, the actor admitted to a drinking problem which Alcoholics Anynymous helped him beat. In addition, his well-known temper could play into Kim's favor in a courtroom battle. Richard Golub -- a New York City matrimonial lawyer whose won divorce battle with acress Marisa Berenson made headlines in 1988 -- told The ENQUIRER: "The location of the filing is also important. "In a New York court, a man could possibly get custody. But if the case is heard in California, where the couple have another home, and since their daughter is only 5, custody of the child would favor Kim." Golub added that the money fight could also be bitter. Kim lost a fortune after buying the entire town of Braselton, Ga., in 1989, and she had to declare bankruptcy after her disastrous involvement with the 1993 movie "Boxing Helena." Adding to her financial woes, Kim had to pay eight years of alimony to her first husband, makeup artist Ron Britton. Now she's likely to hold on tight to the money she has left. The stars' marriage has been crumbling for years, but it finally reached the point of no return after the pair had a series of arguments in recent weeks including one in public outside an Amagansett, Long Island, restaurant on December 2. As stunned onlookers watched, Baldwin lashed into Kim, loudly berating her right on the street -- and he didn't let up even after they got inside. There have been at least three incidents like this in recent months during which Alec's verbal tirades have made Kim storm off, divulged the source. "We had two older brothers whose friends would come over and ask her out constantly. "Kim would run in her room and lock the door. She hated any attention." Even today, Kim hides behind locked doors when she's nervous. "Six months ago the Baldwin clan took a family vacation in Georgia, where they rented several houses next to each other," a family insider revealed. "Everyone got along well, but it was different in Alec and Kim's house. "If there were more than two people in their living room, Kim freaked out after five minutes and locked herself in a spare room. "She's like that at all the family gatherings. "In another incident a few years ago, Kim, Alec and Ireland stopped at a Denny's for a bite to eat. "Everything was normal until a customer at the opposite end of the restaurant sneezed. Kim freaked out, jumped up from the table and fled the restaurant for fear germs from the sneeze would migrate over to their table." Yet Alec claims his wife's eccentricities just make her more endearing. She once demanded that he chase down a dog that had been hit by a car on the Hollywood Freeway and take it to a vet. He did. "She wants you to get out of the car and get the dog on the Hollywood Freeway, so you jump out of the car and get the dog," Baldwin said in a revealing profile of his wife in Vanity Fair magazine. "You carry 16 bags to the airport because she wants chopped almonds on the plane . . .
