The word borda was originally used to indicate a farm building separate from the farm itself or the village and used to store agricultural tools. A ' borda' ( casa borda in Catalan) is not strictly speaking a house, and, apart from rare exception, 'bordes' contain no fireplaces or chimney, only a small opening in the upper floor to allow one to light a small fire, if needed. Later it degenerated over the years to mean simply some type of rustic building of a certain age.
