Arthropoda, Arachnida, Araneae

Arachnida, Araneae, Nesticidae - Nesticus eremita Simon, 1879 - It is a spider that we can certainly consider as a eutroglophile since it's possible find it almost exclusively in hypogean environments in the zones of the cave near the entrance, but where the light is very feeble or completely absent. It feed and reproduce into the caves and has a wide north-mediterranean geographical distribution. In July 2000 the author has discover the presence of this spider in the Bossea Cave, a cavity visited by capable studious during the last century, but that never had citated this species. The occasion of the discovery has been the first meeting of the author with Claudio Arnò, an excellent specialist of this group, with whom the author has begun a profitable collaboration since August 2000. This species is a spider quite specialized that live in a lot of caves of the Piemonte with a remakable degree of depigmentation, also if it's possible to recognize on its cephalothorax (or prosome) a typical drawing that has systematic value for the identification of this species on respect to other ones belonging to the same genus. In the photo above we can see a femal with eggsack, below a subadult male. (Real size of the body: about 5-7 mm).
