Arthropoda, Arachnida, Araneae
Arachnida, Araneae, Metidae, Meta merianae (Scopoli, 1763) - It is a subtroglophile spider with wide european distribution, known of cavities in all the Italy. In the caves of the Piemonte it is often sympatric with Meta menardi and other troglophile spiders. With respect to M. menardi it has smaller size, shorter legs and lighter greyish color. These spiders are active predators that weave circular cobwebs in the dark of the caves, and have an important limiting function against active and prolific insects like the Diptera that usually take refuge in the caves from the adverse climatic conditions or to winter. (Real size of the body: about 12-15 mm).
